Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

QOTD: Chocolate Pecan Pie, Tollhouse Pie; (I’ve only had either of these once or twice) Blueberry; Apple; Pumpkin

QOTD: PECAN!!! :-bd

How did I forget sweet potato pie?!!

I will take anything with sugar (white or brown) on it =)) Pecan is my favorite though. Costco sells good pecan pie, but they only sell for a week around Thanksgiving and Christmas :((

upper 70s and sunny today in NorCal.

I’m in the college pursuit process now for the first time with a 2017 grad and I have been diligently taking notes as we go along because my D class of 2018 just took her SAT last weekend and we will move right into to process for her. I know I have missed things along the way and would love any input from you guys on “what to do, what not to do” in searching and getting into the right college? Does anyone have any opinion on Early Decision? Do you think it provides a greater advantage in terms of admission, showing such intense interest? What if the kid has two first choice schools, either of which she would die to attend and both of which are reach schools? Do you suggest choosing one for Early Decision early on in the application process or skipping that stage altogether and just doing early action to both?

@xaviermom2017 do the schools have early action and early decision available? After not doing any early decision school’s I can now see the value in doing so.

Sunny and in the 90’s today in So Cal. Lovely, but a bit much for March.

@STEM2017 One pizza place we go to will call out " your pie is ready!" I’m like, no, I ordered a pizza, not a pie. They both have crust, but so does a sandwich. Gotta disagree with you on this one.

This thread is the only time in my life I’ve ever referred to pizza as pizza pie, I just thought it was appropriate. I agree with you.

However, Don Antonio’s on 54th st makes a Nutella pizza that could easily qualify as a pizza pie.

QOTD: I’m with @stem2017 Pizza Pie or Peanut Butter Chocolate Pie is pretty good too!!!

Sounds like you are all holding up well in the storm.

Good luck to those waiting for decisions today

QOTD Mmm, pie. It’s too hard to pick a favorite – pumpkin, chocolate, fruit. They’re all good. I don’t like pecan or coconut, and I’d pass on mincemeat. Did anyone else grow up with custard pie? Just an egg custard with cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar in a pie shell? That’s good too.

Good luck to those hoping for other good news today.

@xaviermom2017 my D applied to two very well known in state schools as her safeties in September. These schools have rolling admissions With guaranteed merit awards for good act and GPA . Her first choice was a very expensive school a plane ride away that she had not toured but had researched and loved everything about it. I did the NPC for this school to see if it was in the budget. D asked to apply ED to this school and I let her.(they did not offer EA)

It did require me and the guidance counselor to sign a document on her Common application saying it was ok for her to do apply ED.The Guidance counselor portion also stated that she would not send transcripts to any other schools if D got accepted.

Luckily for my D, applying ED meant she had a decision in December. The school accepted her and because she applied ED had to give her a financial decision with admitting. She received a very Generous package and accepted. If the aid package had been too low she could have declined and then applied to other out of state schools on her list.

I don’t think ED gave her an advantage she has a high GPA, a very high ACT score, good ECs and leadership. I think our geographical location may have been the thing that helped her application. Kids applying to the college she chose ED all to have good stats.

It was nice to have an early decision and not have to wait until march. The downside is if you need to compare offers you can’t. So you really have to know going into ED that the school is affordable and your kid won’t want to change their mind if accepted.

One thing to note is that we have not been able to apply for housing yet, but have been able to register for admitted student days. I believe that once regular decisions have been released we will be able to do Housing.

My advice is to research any school that you want to apply ED to as all schools have different policies.

QOTD For a variety, since @IABooks mentions custard… I like Egg Tart when I go to Dim sum.
We had a Thai Custard at a Thai restaurant recently. Never can get used to sweetened rice though.

I won’t eat mince pie but I like chicken pot pie :))

We went to Joe’s crab shack last weekend and had Key Lime pie and apple crumbles. Yum!

66 degree and no snow. My pear tree is about to blossom.
:x

QOTD: Sour Cream Lingonberry hands down (from a Norwegian restaurant that is famous for its pies)

@mtrosemom Yes, my 7th grader’s school celebrates Pi day. He and H baked a pumpkin pie last night to bring to his math class.

@xaviermom2017 We’re still pretty much in the thick of it, so I’m sure I’ll have better insight in a couple more weeks. Regrets so far: 1) Not insisting D take an ACT &/or SAT prep course and not insisting D re-take the ACT. She got a 29 which is respectable, but I’m sure she could have moved into the 30’s if we’d done these things. 2) Not applying Early Action to more schools. This waiting is killing both of us - so stressful. Although the 1 school she did apply EA to wait-listed her and now she won’t hear from that school until April 15, so I guess there’s no guarantee that applying EA to more schools would have brought us to a resolution before now. Good luck with D18. I don’t envy you going through this twice in two years. But on the other hand, D17’s experience will be fresh in your mind which will no doubt be helpful w/ D18.

QOTD:
Pie, all good.

Homemade, the key is, if you are not vegetarian, leaf lard.

@Motiv8tedmom23 – when the neighbor blew the transformer, was there damage to his house?

We had four power outages in less than three years in coastal CT. It was relentless for a while but have not endured one in more than three years now. After one storm when many in town lost power, we were outside with the neighbors, chatting about our good fortune to still have power. An hour later, a HUGE pine tree came right out of the ground and took out power for the street. We were then w/o power for days, as others had been in the repair queue earlier.

We have had at least two storms with six day outages. Fingers crossed for this one, but so far, so good.

This site is the only place I do social media. I don’t even have a facebook accont. It’s so great to hear everyone’s weather report. It makes me realize that this country is HUGE!! And It’s a great feeling that all of us who are scattered around this huge US gather here to talk about kids, colleges and exchange ideas!

@xaviermom2017 - I’m personally a much bigger fan of Early Action than Early Decision. Unless there is a compelling reason to select one school (e.g., a highly specialized program in an unusual field of study), I think it’s much better to have options and be able to compare offers.

Depending on the individual school’s policies, you can apply to more than one school Early Action and any number of schools RD with or without rolling admissions as long as it’s non-binding. Even with Single Choice EA, you can still apply EA to instate and out-of-state publics, as well as any other RD school.

It is a nice feeling to (ideally) have at least one acceptance early on but not to be obligated (unless you want to be!)

For Pi(e), I’m gonna go with French fruit tarts with real fruit (even better with a layer of chocolate on the crust). It’s got the best of all worlds – a custard-y filling, fresh, ripe fruit, a buttery crust made even more wonderful with chocolate.

If truth be told, I actively dislike most American pie crusts and will – more often than not – leave most or all of the pie crust behind. A graham cracker crust or a really good crumble are the exceptions, but I’ll take a French tart over standard American pie crust any time. (This dislike of pie crust goes double for apple pies with bottom and top crust). Pies without those "flaky"crusts (I’m looking at you, key lime!) are more tolerable.

Thanks for the opinions on the ED/EA! My son didn’t apply ED because his first choice didn’t offer it but did apply EA and we too loved getting answers early as opposed to April. My daughter’s number one reach doesn’t offer ED but one of her other top choices does - which is another reach. We will continue to ponder this
