D took a lemon meringue to Calculus today. Tomorrow she is taking red Kool-aid to Latin for the Eds of March. Only red food though, because of the Caesar, Brutus thing.
I guess my D is double geeky.

@CT1417 The neighbor lost all of their appliances. As a side note, they have since moved away.
@LoveTheBard I’m with you on pies that have too much crust.
Blueberry pie is my favorite!
@xaviermom2017, you have gotten some good advice. I will say that for some ED schools, it is much easier to get in. Some ED schools take as many as 50% of their class from ED. Chances at some schools are 25% chance of admission via ED vs. 10 or less RD. Also, some schools have ED2. You can get two shots at the extreme reach schools. My S took advantage of ED 1 and ED2. Scored a reach school via ED2. Really depends on how much your child loves a school, and how much of a reach. @LoveTheBard has an amazing child who has done exceptionally well with acceptances. Their results are awesome. If you have a child who is not quite at that level, ED can be a help for a reach school…Just saying
Pie: Having had proper Chicago pizza a couple times, I think that would certainly qualify as pie. As for my favorite, I’ll go with Shaker lemon pie, which (in the version we make) is made with sliced whole lemons (minus the seeds, of course).
Today’s weather: In Anchorage, it’s currently (mid-morning) 18℉, up from 7℉ earlier this morning, with a predicted high of 23℉ and overnight low of 1℉. It’s also blindingly clear and sunny, which is a problem, because that means it’s going to get really, really cold the next couple days—pretty much consistently, clear+sunny=cold here, year-round.
Power outages: The only time we get power outages here is when a squirrel or a bird gets where it shouldn’t be in a substation, and those are rare. It kind of surprises me that we don’t have more, since we do have high-voltage transmission lines running across the area (the regular lines are mostly but not entirely underground), but the snow and ice never seems to mess with them. (Of course, the worst power outage we ever endured was in Florida after a hurricane, at eight days. I’m pretty sure that if this region ever saw another magnitude 9.x earthquake we’d be without power for quite a while, too.)
@dfbdfb We are reaping the benefits of our high sunshine tax today with a nice, warm 85.
QOTD: Why are people talking about college admissions when there is a pie discussion going on? My favorite is my mother-in-law’s Strawberry Rhubarb pie!! I LOVE IT!
QOTD: apple pie here but has to be my Nana’s recipe
Drooling for a Deep dish pizza (pie) …
69F here. A few buds blossomed. My pear tree will be beautiful in a few days.
I only see the flower once in 4 - 5 years because we do get tons of snow in late March early April. The buds then freeze off and the leaves come out skipping the flowers. Last year when we returned from Spring break college tour, we saw the pear tree lost a branch due to the weight of snow. Fortunately no other damage.
So I am enjoying the flower this year. :x
We were knocked out for a couple of hours earlier this afternoon - power just restored a few minutes ago. Whew!
QOTD: Key lime, chocolate pb, pumpkin, apple… yeah, it’s all good. D23’s math teacher usually bakes a pie for their class on Pi Day - sadly, no school today because of the weather.
Growing up in Brooklyn, we often called pizza “a pie” and had it referred to as such in local pizzarias.
y, pie discussions only for day and then MIT results, all other topics have to wait
QOTD: Shepard’s pie followed by chocolate cream pie. It’s what’s for dinner!
@BigPapiofthree - I’m blushing on behalf of D.
That said, unless the kid is a recruited athlete or has some other hook that can only be exploited in an ED round, I still actively dislike ED programs; I feel that they benefit the schools at the expense of families and they make it impossible for families to consider all of their options. I truly believe that unless there isn’t shadow of a doubt about an early choice and unless cost is not a factor in a decision (or if financial need is almost guaranteed), ED shouldn’t be the first choice for many families. In some cases, though, it absolutely is – everyone’s experience is different.
When looking at ED/RD acceptance rates, you have to bear in mind a few things: many of the ED students are hooked (e.g., athletes, legacy), and many are strong students that are prepared to submit applications early on (e.g., they have good grades and test scores, polished essays, teachers that know them well and can give good recs). Many of them would have gotten in even without an ED boost.
Even if my daughter had not had high stats and even if she were targeting mid-tier or lower-tiered schools, my advice would have been the same: Throw a bunch of EA and RD and/or rolling admissions applications out there, make sure to apply to a safety or two, seek schools that award merit if that’s an option, cross your fingers and hope for the best.
FWIW, here’s a list of EA schools:

I am an opponent of ED and think it should be banned…agree that it mainly benefits schools. As for pie/pi, my favorite recipe is a two layer key lime with a granola and graham cracker crust.
QOTD; Key Lime pie in Key West, please!
QOTD - I like a good apple crumble pie and mud pie. My family also goes for a good, home made chicken pot pie.
Busses. We bus. Almost zero sidewalks around there, dark and curvy hilly roads. Very dangerous walking conditions. There is a radius for walkers but I don’t recall what it is as my kids have always been bussed. However, as my kids have also always taken zero period, they’ve always been driven to school, and taken the bus home, since 7th grade.
One snow day so far this year. We get nasty black ice on the hills and the busses can’t make it up even if there is minimal snow. We also don’t salt, only sand, which isn’t terribly effective.
Mixed berry pie. All day long. Followed by apple and pumpkin.
I second ED ban.
There a is a Philadelphia Tomato Pie, which appears to be a form of pizza. I saw them in supermarkets in the Philly area, but never tried one.
