@SincererLove: Fantastic news! Congratulations to your D.
@SincererLove Wow, congratulations on MIT!!!
@smcirish Congratulations on the finalist status for the scholarship! Which women’s colleges is she applying to?
I fell off my half lofted bed reaching for a book on my desk and needed stitches on my chin.
@SincererLove awesome news congrats on MIT!
@LoveTheBard I’m not a big pie crust fan either.
@thermom Of course a “pie” is pizza. I grew up in NJ within a short distance of the city.
Bed rails - we have yet to go there, but I doubt (hope?) there will be too much pushback.
ED: I really dislike it. For us it was never an option because we needed to chase merit. But I saw a number of D’s friends who felt pressured into considering ED because of the admissions boost. In one case, for last year, the ED admission rate was about 35% and the RD rate was under 8% I think it’s really stressful for young adults at 17-18 to feel pushed into that level of commitment. However, I think SCEA is a reasonable compromise for the very competitive schools that offer it.
@SincererLove Woot - some MIT love on Pi Day. @Dolemite Sorry your D didn’t get admitted.
@smcirish Congrats on the scholarship!
@SincererLove Congratulations on MIT!!! <:-P <:-P <:-P
@HiToWaMom She is applying to Smith (got an early write), Barnard, Mount Holyoke, Bryn Mawr, Scripps and Saint Mary’s College in IN (I went to SMC, so that was a nod to me, but she really wants to be out of the Midwest so she won’t end up there). She also applied to some co-ed schools too, but I think she will end up at a women’s college if I had to guess.
@SincererLove thats so wonderful news!!!
@smcirish Wow, six women’s colleges!! Since she already got Smith’s early write, she must be feeling pretty calm? I hope she will get the scholarship!! (I love the name of the scholarship. It’s so cute, feminine and fun!)
@HiToWaMom Yes, getting into Smith early really settled her down. Now we just wait to hear about money and keep our fingers crossed! The Early Write is a great idea–it really moved Smith into the front runner in her mind. It’s the one to beat now.
Holy cow @SincererLove great news! MIT, awesome. My Son19 loves it there and Harvey Mudd, 2 super easy schools to get into. LOL
@Dolemite crud for your D! Hope she gets over it fast and finds her place.
We had our first recent admit to MIT at our school recently. It was a girl, just a nice regular girl who works on the yearbook and school paper. I don’t know what else she does, but I think my son and his friends were in shock that she got in, as she is not the valedictorian, super athlete, tech wiz etc. Just a nice normal white girl from the burbs.
She must have had some super test scores and essays or something, or everyone on the MIT newspaper and yearbook were graduating. ha. Anyways, cool she got in.
@SincererLove Congratulations to your D!
@STEM2017 I don’t like your EAEO.
The “expiring offer” would have caused insane stress in my life. S17 applied to two schools EA and no schools ED. S17 was accepted to both of his EA schools but there are a couple of other schools he needs to hear from to be certain. Maybe RD deadline gets moved up to 10/15 for all schools with decisions by 1/15. Then the kids get to enjoy the spring semester of their senior year.
@SincererLove Congrats
Son17 just came in and asked me for some money so he can enter the Nitro Ball senior tournament at school tomorrow.
YES!!! I told him to put his game face on and bring the title home!!
He’s honestly still more excited about his pickle championship than getting accepted to RPI and winning the DECA event. He’s totally pumped for tomorrow. I’ll post his results,
I’m off to google Nitro Ball.
Congrats @smcirish!
On the topic of lofted beds, S17 was at Duke a couple of summers ago and the beds were half lofted, I didn’t understand why, but a kid on his floor fell off the bed a couple of days in. Broke his arm. I’m not a fan but can appreciate the desire to increase usable space.
@SincererLove – huge congrats to your D – I was unaware MIT does direct admits to major but very happy for your D to get into CS!
That’s a very good point @paveyourpath.
My idea was to replace ED with EAEO, and leave the regular EA as it is.
How about if schools had an Early Indicator of Entrance Interest Option (EIEIO) for student’s to choose?
@RightCoaster I love that he’s so into the pickleball title! DECA is huge in some parts of the city here, not at our school but at a few others, it’s an amazing thing. I can’t believe he’s not excited about Disneyland. NItro ball. LOL!
My kids both played (D17 orchestra) and marched (D20 band) at DL and/or California Adventure in middle school so it was never a big deal.
