Just skipped several days of posts… I will have to go back and figure out who to congratulate.
My S17 was accepted at UC Santa Cruz yesterday for CS. This was the last school he was waiting to hear from. He got accepted to 5/7 of his schools. I basically called it, he got into none of his reaches (SLO & UC Davis) and into all of this other schools. USSC was the one I wasn’t sure about. I think we targeted well.
My S has refused to really think about which school attend until he heard from them all. But UCSC and UofO are his top contenders with CU Boulder coming in 3rd. Now it’s time to decide which of these schools to choose.
Fun to hear all the glowing comments about WashU - my late mother graduated from there while WW2 was still raging and her yearbook is filled with photos of men and women in uniform and placeholder pages for activities and clubs that were “suspended for the duration.”
I really wanted D to look at applying, but she was adamant that it was too far away and refused to throw her hat into the ring. So I’m happily living vicariously through all of you!
@thshadow the WashU portal had information on two days to visit in April ( I’m not positive on exactly what they actually called the days), a multicural event, and information on what travel agent to contact in order for them to pick up the cost for airfare. I don’t have access to the portal so my apologies for not being more specific.
Congrats @curiositycat333 for the 5/7 result, not too shabby!! Pretty darn good! I’m glad he likes a few of them too, yay.
Son told me after school that several of his friends are now considering NEU. Weirdly, they were all given the NUin option. They all talked about it and don’t have any reservations about it, they were actually pretty excited to get out of town for a while and explore the world. Maybe NEU is on to something. Who knows, My son said that it wouldn’t bother them much because they leave for a few months, but then they come back and will be close to home and to a city they are familiar with. vs other kids who leave home for the 1st time to a new place, and then come back to the US and go to another new place. That would be harder, so I see his point.
His choice would be London, Montreal, and Shanghai in that order.
Hey, at least he’s thinking about his options now, that’s a start.
@RightCoaster, D didn’t apply to NEU, but it was on the list right up until application time. The NUin program is interesting. I don’t think it would be a good match for D, but I could picture S18 loving something like that. NEU is one of his high interest schools.
@RightCoaster --if you have friends who are going in and out and your are doing it together, it sounds like a great option.
Does NU not seem to “love it’s own” in regards to geography? D got in there with merit even though her stats seem in line (maybe a smidge higher) with some of the kids who were deferred from there EA. The one thing I could see was the kids who were deferred all seemed to be from the northeast!? Have you seen that?
Hi @Snoozn I don’ think NEU would be a great fit for your D either. I think the 2 NY schools would be better.
I don’t personally “love” NEU, but I respect what the school is all about and appreciate what it has to offer. I think my son has gotten more mature over the last year and I think he could handle NU In. The kids are kind of forced into making friends with people while they are studying abroad, which is good. Built in friend group when they get back, or if they want they can meet new friends 2nd semester. My son really wants to do a semester abroad at some point, so this isn’t a huge issue for us.
After looking at other schools co-op and internship opporunities I think NEU ranks at the top, but that’s because they’ve had a much longer time to figure it all out. There are a bunch of schools hot on their heels, and that provide different styles of learning environments from NEU. Some of those might be a better fit for our kids.
I don’t know firsthand about NU-in but I belong to a Northeastern parent Facebook group and there are multiple parents that raved about the experiences their kids had in the program. I think many of the kids were hesitant at first and then were so happy they did it. Just food for thought…
@thshadow@Testingearly I logged into my D’s portal for WashU. She has 2 visit options listed like TestingEarly’s D - the Multicultural event and Spring Preview. The Multicultural event lists the travel grant info the Spring Preview does not mention it. I’m guessing the travel grant option is only for URMs or whomever they consider Multicultural.
Congratulations to everyone on the WashU acceptances! It was one of the schools on our initial list, and it’s much closer than those on the final list, but the big MAC wasn’t there when compared to some other choices. Too bad – I thought it looked like a wonderful option!
@carachel2 so far my son knows of 12 kids admitted from their school this year. Usually there are 30 or so admits out of 70-80 kids and out of those 30 about 8 enroll.
Every kid except one has been admitted via NU In. Every kid has over 30 ACT and good GPA, some AP’s, ECs etc. So pretty good well rounded students that fits the NEU profile. However, none of them got any merit $$ and one kid who had gotten in ED, had to decline because their financial package was lacking. Too bad because this kid is a great kid. The other kids are all excited they got in, but have started talking about the price vs value.
So, I think NEU sort of loves the kids around here, and I think they love the kids in the western burbs of MA because their parents can fork out the cash and have their kid enroll in a decent school close to home. They certainly don’t seem to make any exceptions for stats though. The kid either has the stats or it’s a rejection.
@RightCoaster --yes, that’s what I mean. I cannot figure out how a kid with similar stats got in EA with solid merit vs. all of those more local kids with minimal to no merit.
Quick question – I wrote to admissions at one of D’s schools about increasing merit a bit and haven’t heard back. I emailed last Tuesday. I know it must be a madhouse in admissions this time of year, so I want to allow enough time but I also don’t want to go crazy waiting to hear back. How long would you wait before sending a friendly follow-up?
I don’t know how it works @carachel2 over there. I think it’s the hardest school to predict on son’s list. I wasn’t sure he’d get in, and I had predicted that if he did get in it would be at full price. So that’s what he got, along with the surprise of NU In which he had specifically checked off that he did not want. Thank you sir may I have another, lol.
I do actually think they go out of their way to find the local kids with good stats that help THEM, but don’t offer any merit. The merit and financial aid goes to the super tippy top applicants ( 34-36 ACT) from all over that can help them climb higher in the rankings and helps the geographic diversity. Then all the kids around here want to go to the NEU because that’s where all the smart kids are at, it’s new and in the city, and they have a great ranking, so they beg their parents to spend oodles of cash to go there.
I really don’t like the way they’ve become focused on ratings and the rise to the top. Obviously it seems to be working for them, but I’m just not a fan. I like the new campus, the co-ops, I think the education is decent.
For whatever reason I am just not in love with it and don’t really feel like giving them any $$, but I’m trying to let my son make a decision without a lot of my bias, so we’ll see what happens. I think he could do just as good for himself elsewhere, but it’s his dream not mine.
