Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@socalmom007 If UCI admits 31,639 like they did last year, the freshmen admissions rate will be about 37%, just a little lower than last year’s 40%. Just over 85,000 freshmen applications this year.

That sounds better @youcee !!! I thought they admitted 21,000 typically?

@smcirish Wow, super huge congrats!!!

Congrats to all on the latest round of Wash U, NEU, and Mt. Holyoke acceptances (and merit)!

Hi all, catching up as I just got back from a 4 day business trip!

@RightCoaster I’m so happy your son won the DECA competition! Congrats! Oh, and we have an amazing bakery nearby with gluten free items. Their macaroons are to die for and I never even really liked coconut before! And Congrats on the long awaited NEU acceptance! And reading further, it sounds like your son is really into the idea of studying in London! If so, I say go for it! I lived in London and it’s a terrific city - I think it’s a phenomenal opportunity. <:-P

I thought that at first, but the truth is, the kids who participate in the program bond with each other and have each other when they return the following semester. They have a common exciting experience to share!

@youcee Thanks for the San Clemente suggestion! We stopped in at Pizza Port for a brew and the next night went to Nick’s for dinner - sat by the window, it was a beautiful night and the food was fantastic! Quite frankly it was nice to be in socal at the same time an ice storm was hitting my neighborhood back home. @my2caligirls Sorry we didn’t make it to south of Nick’s but we did make it to Nicks!

@CT1417 reading up on your power outages, I sure hope you have a back up generator! We could use one, lots of trees around our power lines. Funny story - I took D on a trip to Europe a few years back and the S/O didn’t want to come - wouldn’t you know, his punishment was a power outage for six days while we were gone!!

@CA1543 I see you were smart and invested in a generator! We’re going to get one this year I think - Costco

@dfbdfb A BIG congrats to your daughter’s acceptance to Muhlenberg, Pres Scholarship and Honor’s program.

@payn4ward I would very much like a Pear Tree.

@VickiSoCal Sorry to hear that about u of Bath, maybe they just thought it wasn’t a good fit, I wouldn’t count the others out just yet!

@Testingearly Congrats on Washington U!
@SincererLove and @nw2this Awesome news on MIT, congratulations!
@Dolemite Sorry to hear D didn’t get in. Their loss, she’s clearly a go-getter!
@thshadow Congrats on Washington U! D has some fabulous options, good luck with decision time!
@klinska Congrats to your D on UMASS!!
@Cloudysmom congratulations on the University of Richmond
@mamaedefamilia Congrats on Washington U!! BTW, where did you grow up in North Jersey?
@curiositycat333 Congrats on UCSC!

@snoozn Yeah, today is the 1st day in about 3 that anything in Western NY has been open as ~2 ft of snow fell between Monday night and Wednesday afternoon, and last week was a huge wind storm, too, with lots of closings–weather has been a bit crazy… Plus it is spring break for most of the schools in the area. I’d check again early next week.

@Fishnlines29 Glad you enjoyed PP San Clemente. I’ve actually never been to that one, but have frequented the local one for 30 years (I think they have 5 now), long before they started making their own beer. Crazy that we can get it at Costco now. Several of their locations have won Brew Pub of the year at the Great American Beer Festival. There is a Pizza Port Morro Bay about 15 minutes from Cal Poly SLO - the southern ones obviously descended from that one based on the menu items, but they are no longer related and haven’t been for as long as I’ve known about them. I’ve had a Cal IPA at PP that had the school logo (I’m sure totally unauthorized) and was really good and hoppy.

Like @dfbdfb , she’s in at Mt. Holyoke with a 21st Century Scholarship! Bringing it to almost exactly… what all the other offers have been. I think that schools account for my tuition benefit through my work when deciding what scholarship to offer. Why offer more if the benefit covers the difference? But then she doesn’t feel the love from any particular school. This is a weird game.

odd result:

We started the Pitt application, but ruled it out early, never finished it and never paid the application fee. We got lots of e-mail and mail reminders to finish the application which we ignored. Tonight they decided to send an acceptance anyway with a full-ride scholarship! :open_mouth:

Shocking considering that we did not apply.

@nw2this: Um, congrats? :-/

@nw2this The very weird. How on earth did that happen?

@nw2this @-) maybe you should play the lottery…

@nw2this I’m definitely going to use your new groundbreaking application strategy for son19.
Brilliant!!!

@nw2this Wow! Congrats! I’m assuming test scores were sent to Pitt? They must have been fantastic.

In the words of Billy Ray Valentine (Trading Places), “This kind of thing happens to me every day.”

Congrats!

@nw2this Wow, just wow! will your daughter consider this? or is MIT top choice?!!!

@nw2this NFW!

How did they word THAT acceptance?!!

@nocturne21 – lots and lots of fantastic test score kids applied to Pitt this year and did not get that same result. At. All.
(As in ACT 36 and valedictorian status— awarded $20k per year and that’s it).

Call me a cynic, but something else has to be at play here.

I was just thinking, maybe she snuck in the application at a later date?! it’s been known to happen in our neck of the woods!! :)>-

I know nothing about tuition exchange, but could that have been a factor here @nw2this? I’m determined to figure it out! Lol
