Accepted at Kenyon, but with no merit aid at all, so basically a big no.
No need for hugs, though—she’d pretty much moved on from being in love with the school, and probably only submitted the application because it was easy, with no supplemental essays and no application fee. (Of course, she’s a good writer, so I suspect the supplemental essays helped her at other schools.)
I do wonder, though—anecdata says that Kenyon’s application numbers went up (and thus acceptance rate went down) went they went extra-essay-free, but I wonder whether it dropped their yield and draw rates. I really do feel like the lack of working on an extra essay for them resulted in my daughter not feeling as much of an affinity for them as she did with some of the others.
Anyway, @payn4ward I’m so sorry about Case, apparently, they too are stupid.
College admissions are truly baffling. D17 accepted at Sarah Lawrence today, yet denied at Pepperdine, wha??? My daughter’s spreadsheet is the weirdest thing ever. Waitlisted at SDSU, yet accepted at UT Austin, Purdue, and Cal Poly. I don’t even begin to get it anymore.
@dfbdfb - Kenyon and Grinnell were both easy/no essay apps. Grinnell later sent an email asking for a short “Why Grinnell?” essay. Kenyon was radio silence until today.
Yeah, I guess it is more selective, but Sarah Lawrence is higher rated. UT Austin oos I don’t even understand, it baffles me how she was accepted honestly, lol!
Someone asked if D had a front runner, not right now… waiting to see all the cards. She’s holding out hope for Irvine, but I’m not sure if not having heard by now is indication of a rejection coming. UCSB is next week, but not terribly optimistic. Waiting on a few more schools in New York and PA. She has wonderful choices right now, but she and her BF aren’t in together anyplace viable. We’re sweetening the pot for her to go to Cal Poly if he goes to Irvine (accepted) or UCSB (pending). We’d be saving so much money at SLO we’re willing to offer her a little extra in the way of spending and gas money so they can see each other easily.
I have been lurking on here ever since I accidentally typed 2017 instead of 2016. I became really excited for everyone’s kids, so I keep coming back to read the updates. Honestly, it has been a nice diversion as our DD is in her first year of college over 2000 miles away.
@LoveTheBard Last year after being accepted EA to UChicago, my DD was awarded a university grant and federal work/study… In our case, they were NOT need based. In the summer, we received a second FA letter, and a second university grant had been awarded. Because of that second grant, the work/study was later taken off. However, DD didn’t find that out until she was already applying for a position. The gentleman interviewing her led her to believe that it wasn’t uncommon for work/study to be taken out of the package. DD did ask the FA office about it, and they told her that since she was awarded the second grant, they took off work/study. In the end, the interviewer for work/study hired her for an internship, which DD was thrilled about.
We feel very fortunate our son got into UCLA. The number of friends of his with high stats that did not get in is very surprising. Saw a few people on the UCLA thread that got the alumni scholarship invite that didn’t get in - that must be heartbreaking because their hopes had to be high. Looking forward to going to both the Discover UCLA Engineering day and Bruin Day. And spending lots of money on sweatshirts and t-shirts.
We learned a few things from our older son’s experience a couple of years ago and were able to adjust course on this one just a bit that helped him have a stronger application. Much of what we learned the first go round originated from this site, so thanks to the CC community.
Great day for my D . Awarded Fry scholarship at IU which is full COA to the Kelley business school and accepted at Fordham’s Gabelli business school with full tuition scholarship and 4 years of guaranteed housing! Feeling grateful and very blessed!
Congrats to all who received good news. So many amazing acceptances and scholarships! I liked or condoled as appropriate - hope I didn’t miss anyone.
@socalmom007 So sorry to hear about Fordham. For a friend of my D’s, it was a top choice when she applied last year. She is a dedicated student and got late start admission and little to no financial assistance. She ended up at a state flagship and is doing really well. But still, it can’t help but sting.
The application was partially complete - draft essays, test scores, grades. The biggest thing missing was the application fee. Like I said before, they had contacted us about the missing elements, it was no secret.
It was a full ride - tuition, room, board, books, research/study abroad stipend. It was a named scholarship and it said only a very tiny number of students got it. So, to say anymore would essentially identify us. I am pretty sure Pitt AO can already figure out who we are since you guys have alerted them.
We will not be taking it, so rest assured that we won’t be taking something from a more deserving student. We were not planning to contact Pitt as I am sure they have mechanisms in place for unaccepted awards.
For the doubters, don’t you think it is strange that Pitt results came out months ago and we are just getting ours. Last night we got the scholarship, tonight we got the Engineering and Honors acceptances.
DS got UCLA, but got waitlisted by Case Western. For both NU and Case, he applied for BSMD and was not invited for interview and it appears they want to protect their yield so denied UG. DS was not planning to take them anyway.
@youcee – Love that cheer! Huge UCLA fans out here on the east coast now. In fact, (as we’re watching games tonight), we were at the Final Four in Seattle back in '95, screaming that all weekend. Congrats to your son!
