@theally1 We had him take more AP courses and the ones he did take were the core ones, such as Einglish Lang, APUSH, Calc, Physics. When I started digging to find out why S1 was waitlisted, I realized UCLA was accepting kids with way more AP classes than S1 had. His test scores and GPA were excellent. I also read somewhere (can’t find it anymore) that there were about 7 AP classes that UCs consider core. Basically it’s more beneficial to take AP English Lang or APUSH than something like APES. So a few more APs and higher quality APs. A 4.0 UW seems to provide a significant boost too. There were a few other things that made his application stronger for an engineering major, plus he’s a better writer than his brother, but I think he would have been more marginal without the knowledge we gained from S1’s experience. He was also fortunate to have a UC application reader review his essays to make sure he was answering them correctly. He also got some good advice from a UCLA rep at a school event about how they like the extracurricular section answered - details, not just a list of activities. I thought it was a strong app because it was focused, well written, and relevant to his major. He probably had luck on his side too because I saw plenty of kids with similar stats not get in, so you wonder what the difference was.
@DMV301 The t-shirt I get will be my second with UCLA on it, but the first without an F in front of it.
Oh, and Lonzo Ball is amazing. Reminds me of Jason Kidd, but a better shooter and a little more athletic.
D has already narrowed down to two schools for her final choice, but the other results are still interesting to see. She was accepted at VA Tech and waitlisted at Case Western. From reading the stats of WL kids, I’m surprised she wasn’t rejected.
@youcee Congrats on UCLA!! <:-P That’s awesome news. So many applicants this year! I’m glad you are all excited.
@socalmom007 Sorry about the Fordham. Reading their thread, I can’t figure out how decisions were made.
@cloudysmom I can’t wrap my head around my dd’s scholarship awards. She was accepted to all the schools she applied to and with merit. The acceptances didn’t really surprise us bc Rochester was the highest ranked school she applied to (and Rochester was the one we weren’t sure about). But, the scholarships are all over the place. Rochester doesn’t give out much and the amt she received there seems on par with what everyone on that thread posted. But Temple, otoh, gave her an equally drop in the bucket scholarship and would be her next most expensive option. Temple?? Ok. CofC would be her 3rd most expensive option. Temple and CofC are lowest ranked schools she applied to! Then she has 2 full ride/close to full ride options. The rest were all full tuition offers. Like I said…all over the place.
@dfbdfb Congrats on Kenyon anyway!
@NorthLeftCoast Welcome! How is your daughter enjoying U Chicago? What kind of internship will she be doing?
Wow!! @Cubanmom3 Congrats on both acceptances and scholarships! you must be so proud! <:-P
@thshadow Oh, bum deal about Mudd
It’s their loss and of course your daughter has some amazing acceptances already so hopefully she’ll just move right along in her head!!
@illinoyz Congrats on Northwestern!
Wow so many great acceptances for the kids yesterday, amazing!! Congratulations!!!
Of couse there were a few weird denied/waitlist results too. Those schools lose out in my opinion!
Missed out in some great kids. Boooooo!!!
The CA University seems crazy hard to predict or understand reading all of your threads.
My son has taken his waitlist Ok. I guess the group of kids that got into Northeastern chatted all day about what they would do and where to go for NU In. My son plans on going to London if he decides to enroll there. 2 friends plan on the same, 1 likes Grace, 1 likes Australia. After reading more about the program yesterday I feel better about it, except that price tag OUCH!.
But anyways, thinking about his good choices yesterday took his mind off the sting of waitlist.
Waiting on one more result today. We are up at the mountains niow, so even if any bad news comes in at least we can hit the slopes and shrug it off. Or we’ll celebrate up on the peak later today! Can’t go wrong.
D accepted to Boston Univ. with Presidential Scholarship! This will make her weekend a lot happier.
@srk2017 Congrats on UCLA!! <:-P Sorry about Case… tougher and tougher these days.
@youcee great advice for those applying to UC schools!
@nw2this Thanks for the update, that’s just so crazy!! Well, I’m glad your D has some fabulous choices and she must feel very loved since it appears Pitt tried to recruit her hard in the end.
i*
@snoozn What are her two top choices? was it RIT and ?? Virg Tech maybe?
@Mom2aphysicsgeek Is your D leaning toward the schools with full scholarships? Or does she have something different in mind?! I think SC was up there? Or maybe now Fordham?
@RightCoaster jealous you are skiing! Is your son waiting on BU?!
@nocturne21 Wow, Congratulations!! That’s is fabulous news! <:-P
@youcee D accepted at UCLA, too. We are OOS and I agree that rigor in schedule worked in her favor. She did receive an email about the alumni scholarship but didn’t apply. I am just beyond pleased about her acceptances. Her only rejection was her top choice – ED Duke (my H alma mater)–but then she could move on. That was a reach for sure. Unfortunately, no merit awards for the other top state schools where she’s been accepted (which were reach/matches), but she’s got 2 more schools to hear from. We head to UVA tomorrow. That might seal the deal, or we continue to debate and visit throughout April.
@Fishnlines29 yes. BU. He is still sleeping. Very cold this AM so we’ll wake him in a bit, hit slopes when it warms up a bit. No rush today.
S was accepted to Boston U. with Presidential Scholarship!
Congrats @nocturne21 on your Ds acceptance and Pres scholarship!
DS got BU 7 yr BSMD program. No MAC (they rarely give it BSMDs, suckers
) Is Vandy still dandy is the QOTD
@firstwavemom Congrats on UCLA and good luck with your decision making process!
@RightCoaster Well, it’s funny, D really preferred BU to NU when we visited Boston, but I preferred NU - the campus, the message. So of course I’m rooting for another acceptance for your son but having this London thing in his back pocket is very exciting!
Congrats on BU @paveyourpath and @srk2017! Fingers crossed for your S, @RightCoaster!
Congrats to all who received good news yesterday!!! Hugs to those that didn’t.
@nw2this, thanks for clarifying. But the school would not know for sure that you are not accepting until after May 1 when the decision deadline is. By that time another deserving student will have made their decision as well, and it might be too late.
I know you didn’t ask to be put in this position, but would you consider sending an email so they know you won’t accept for sure?
Congrats @paveyourpath and @srk2017 on BU.
1 Great scholarship, 1 not so much, ouch.
@srk2017 I’m glad you have at least 1 great option!!
@Fishnlines29 I think my son likes NEU better because he has friends going there. I think that comforts him. Plus the fact that he wants to explore. We’ll see!!
@srk2017 Congrats on the BS/MD acceptance! Sorry they did not show the financial love! Love your quote of the day.
@Fishnlines29 SC already has her room deposit! The only deposit we made.
Yes, I am almost positive that is where she going to end up.
We told her we wanted to her to seriously consider the 2 different paths. She started her college applications thinking IR/IS was the direction she wanted to go with her future. The more colleges she visited and the more depts she interacted with, the less sure she became about decision and the more she moved toward IB. Fordham is the only liberal arts school she would consider and mainly it would be bc of the internship possibilities at the UN. But, I think mentally she has switched gears to IB, and honestly, Fordham would be pushing the brink of our budget and Dd would have to take out her own loans.
