@ act2017 Hook em!!
@LoveTheBard thanks for your input and I totally agree. Call me weird but I like handholding when needed.
@texasmissy --are you from Texas or currently living there? No Texas schools on your kid’s list?
@carachel2 texasmissy posted she is an alumn and has a Junior at UT, but D17 wants a small school.
@carachel2 I’m in Austin. She applied to UT under duress from me in case for some reason she needs to be close to home but she really wants to go far away and a much smaller school. It’s so hard to beat the $$$ at Texas though. Oh, and her sister is a longhorn and I have undergrad and graduate degrees from there
@payn4ward – thanks! I either missed it or forgot lol!
@texasmissy – I have a kid like that also! It’s been a busy season. Glad we are done. D applied to UT and A&M under a bit of duress but did eventually come around to acknowledging an in-state option is a good thing.
UT admissions were brutal this year and by the end of that crazy day last month she truly realized her engineering admission there was a big deal. Most of her friends were CAPd or offered alternative majors. Brutal! She wasn’t offered any money though-- which is what we were expecting.
@carachel2 we were also surprised by the UT process this year. Lots of my Ds friends were CAPed also. I am so jealous of you and everyone who is done. I really don’t think she knows where she wants to go and of course she is still
Waiting on quite a few. …
And still, shocked D17 got into UT Austin as an oos applicant. I do not understand college admissions.
Almost done. D applied to 13 accepted at 10 so far with 2 full rides plus, 3full tuition, 4 good merit and one pending finalist scholarship that could sway her decision. Still waiting on Vandy, Harvard and Princeton with cautious optimism. Direct admit to the business schools with honors where offered.
Honestly will miss the long talks and closeness this process has given us… planning for this since 6 grade. Wicked proud of her perseverance and determination. Bittersweet as this is my last one.
@carachel2 - yes it is. Against all odds(non-auto admit, ORM, ACT 32 with 29 in math) he made it to two top 10 CS programs ( UT and UIUC). I think it’s more than perfect scores and top x% of the class.
@ACT2017 Yay! Another future longhorn! My DS will also attend UT Austin in the fall. I thought my DS was going to end up being the only longhorn in our group this year. I can’t believe I’m saying this but…hook 'em!
@paveyourpath We are in the same boat. D has 2 schools to hear from (today and tomorrow). She has a frontrunner, too and I’m hoping she/we make a decision before we start spring break on Apr. 7. I’ll be starting this all up again soon for S19.
Congrats to all who have made decisions!
@Cubanmom3 I echo your sentiments about missing the closeness that my D & I have experienced through this process. I think our D’s have some of the same options. We still have a long way to go until a final decision is made,
but it is bittersweet going through it with your youngest. :-S
@srk2017 or any other Cornelius recipient, I am giving a college application talk in a couple of weeks, and I was wondering if you could tell me how they applied (ED, RD). Did major matter? Separate application? I used Vandy as one of my meets need examples and would like to be able to add info about the scholarship. If they applied RD, did they find out before other RD applicants? (I can’t get a clear idea from the posts I read.)
TIA!
@Mom2aphysicsgeek - DS applied RD. I doubt major matter but school may. He applied to College of Arts and Science. Yes, there is separate application (with separate essay) for each of 3 main scholarships Vandy has. Decisions came out on March 8th, RD decisions are not out yet.
Thanks! @srk2017 Do you have a vague idea of the stats of recipients? I think they are the top 1% of applicants. Is that correct? Any idea about GPA or test score ranges? Also, did the scholarship app require additional LOR or just essays?
(Sorry for all of the questions. I am a tad nervous about this talk. All of the ones I have done up to now have been for homeschoolers. This one was arranged by a woman who runs ACT workshops and she is expecting around a 100 public and private school parents. Trying to be prepared!)
Congrats @ACT2017 – UT CS is awesome - we toured and my DS was extremely impressed! huge congrats & close to home. Great city too.
@Mom2aphysicsgeek - I believe they have around 200 of these scholarships (all 3 combined) and they get around 30,000 applications so less than 1%. CV is for academics and leadership, so stats are very important. CV doesn’t require LOR, but Chancellor’s does.
Thank you @Dolemite. Good luck to your D also! I would have said my D had at least 3 favorites 24 hours ago. She was looking at an instagram account about everything that doesn’t work at Georgetown yesterday and she was horrified. For two years, Georgetown has been the gold standard to which she compared every college to. A couple dozen pictures and captions and she doesn’t think she wants to attend there anymore. As I have said before, I would like D to attend at least 2 accepted student events before she makes a final decision.
@srk2017 Thanks!
