Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Late to the party but here goes. We applied to 12 schools here, accepted to 10 and still waiting on 1 although ds has decided where he is going already. His one rejection was a total shock but not a big disappointment so it’s all good. It also came right about the same time that his Big Mac award (full tuition) came from one of his favorite schools making the decision pretty easy. I’m glad the waiting game is over but now I’m on to booking airfare home fro Thanksgiving break and planning for Parents weekend. Yikes!

@NolaCAR @carachel2 Thank you for the tips!!! and @carachel2 Congrats on successful negotiations! Two more questions about the same topic: 1. Who should send the negotiation email: a parent or a student? 2. We know that the merit scholarship committee at the school we are trying to negotiate with is meeting on the weekly basis until the end of March, so the latest scholarship winners will be notified by the first week of April. So, when do you think is the best time to send out that letter, now while they are still in process of assigning merit $$ or shall we wait till April? I greatly appreciate your words of wisdom!

@educationfan I would suggest the child write the letter and get it out asap.

@educationfan I agree with getting the letter out ASAP. From what I have read, a parent usually writes the letter since they are the ones holding the purse strings, but I don’t think you could go wrong either way-parent or student. In our case, I am the family budgeter, so I wrote the letter and signed it, but DH and D reviewed it before I mailed it.

Congrats to @ACT2017 & @jedwards70 on UT Austin—and congrats on having the decision made!

@Mom2aphysicsgeek —Good Luck with your presentation!

@Testingearly --what sort of things did not work at G-town? As in, double majors or rundown physical facilities?

Good luck to anyone else waiting for decisions today and tomorrow. Is there a running list of decision release dates somewhere? I also have not seen the thread where parents were posting admissions.

@Testingearly what are the Georgetown problems she uncovered? Thanks

@Testingearly, Can you share a link to the instagram you mentioned. Would like to understand what is happening at georgetown.

Like Collegecue - late to the party here. S17 applied to 9 schools. We’ve heard from 8: 7 acceptances/1 rejection (not a surprise on this one). Waiting on 1 Outstanding - should hear by 4/1 and did not hear of any merit aid yet for the most recent 3/15 acceptance - though, he has already decided where he will go. Trying to figure out who will fly out with him for move in - have not even considered parent’s weekend and he will stay through Thanksgiving - only come home for Christmas/New Year break. Looking forward to his Eagle Scout COH this weekend.

Summaries
I had been thinking that we should all post summaries, including info about your child, to whatever level of detail you wanted. I had thought that it would make the most sense after our kid made their decision, but I guess after all decisions are in makes sense too.

So here’s mine for DD:
App / Stats
ACT: 35
SAT: 760(M)/740(V) (super-scored)
SAT 2: 760 math 2, 570 Japanese (a hobby essentially), 620 Bio (E) - taken with no studying, spur-of-the-moment, because she didn’t want to take history :open_mouth: - not sent anywhere.
GPA: 3.4 UW, 3.7 W - though with a nice trend, and a story (dealing with ADHD)
ECs: Pretty much nothing - the closest thing to a highlight was starting a club at her school.
Essays and recs: My guess is a big plus, but who really knows.

Results, CS intended major
WashU: Accepted
Rose Hulman: Accepted EA with $11k merit
RPI: Accepted with $21.5k merit
Purdue: Accepted CS EA, no merit
Indiana U: Accepted EA (direct CS decision would be made later) - $10k merit IIRC
Case Western: Accepted EA, $23.5k merit

Olin: Rejected
Mudd: Rejected

Currently deciding between Rose vs WashU vs RPI… :-/

Summary: Admissions went about as well as we could have hoped. Olin and Mudd were correct to reject her.

And some notes in case anyone wants to make their posts all fancy looking:
bold -> bold
green -> green
green bold -> green bold

@thshadow I’d love to see an entirely new thread for all of us to post this information after a decision has been made! Otherwise, it gets buried, and I get confused.

Maybe a new thread on the main parenting board “The Scoop-
Class of 2017-- How it All Shook Out” lol

D just got some good news for a change. Elon on their own decided to give her 5K merit. that puts them definately ahead of CofC and indiana. Still waiting for American/GW./Emory (likely rejects)

All you Big MAC winners, there is a newbee who needs some suggestions on great schools that offer Big MAC.

@Testingearly I’m also curious about what your D heard about Georgetown. D was accepted EA, and it is her top choice, so I would like to know the negatives in advance.

@carachel2 Wow, so happy to hear D committed! Congrats!! it’s going to be so fun seeing how they all make out in their first year. Oh my. Sigh. We had NO LUCK negotiating aid. But I kind of knew that going in - they did say if D applies for (something or other twice per year) she could get an additional 1K per semester. So we’ll see.

@ACT2017 Congrats on committing to UT - how nice it’s so close to home and was his first choice!

This just made me crack up and reminds me of that thread (craziest reasons child dismissed a college) or something to that affect! Kids are so funny about what rubs them the wrong way! I guess it’s good in a way, with all the amazing choices, you have to narrow them down somehow!!

@educationfan some colleges prefer to see the student negotiate - I have mixed emotions since I do hold the $$ BAG $-) - it’s probably a good idea to find out what the particular college you want to negotiate with prefers.

A separate thread for summaries makes a ton of sense.

Do you think we should start it now or wait? (I would vote for waiting until 5/1.)

Those of us with kids coming behind yours would be very grateful for a thread as suggested here!

@thshadow – Perhaps start the thread now while you still the attention of those already committed. There will certainly be a contingent still hanging out on May 1st at midnight. (Or is April 30th at midnight? I should figure that out as I sense that will be my son!)

Regarding a separate thread, why not use this sleepy thread to post outcomes.
