Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Fight on, @dave_n!! Congratulations to your D! Very cool Gif, too.

Onward and upward, indeed, @Dave_N ! My D got it also, so it seems she’s in good company.

Nice to hear about D’s speech, @SincererLove

@Dolemite - USC Trustee’s is FT and honors college. No stipend.

@LoveTheBard —no stipend, but I really got the feeling when I was on campus that paid summer research, in a location of the student’s choosing, is readily available for these Trustee students. I would have thought it was just talk, except that I know a student there with the Presidential and she had a fully paid research summer after her first year…and not in LA or her home city.

Of course, this is not guaranteed, so I may try to do some more digging around to see how likely this is, but each time I inquired, the response was always “why would your son want to do research for free?”. Ummm…because no one has ever paid him before!

He is thrilled with the award, but will not think about it until all decisions are in next week.

@LoveTheBard could you clarify? If you are accepted as trustees are automatically in honors college? I though it meant honors housing not honors college. Just wondering, thanks!

@Dave_N and @LoveTheBard Awesome!! Congrats! <:-P

@sdl0625 Congrats on American! Nice!! <:-P

@letsshare FT=Full Tuition

For any NMF who are waiting to hear whether they have been awarded the $2500 from NMSC, apparently this was sent out in mail today . . . and may be viewable on student’s NMSC portal now. DS called to inquire re status, and no info re any award, so he’s prob not one of the lucky ones. Nothing on his portal either. Others seem to have positive notations on their portals. So, in case this helps any of you here… Good luck!

Congrats @CT1417 and @LoveTheBard on Trustees.

I believe @letsshare that you are correct. The McCarthy Honor’s College is just housing. They have things like the Thematic Option and Freshman Science Honors but not an Honors School.

@letsshare — the whole Honors college designation was the one thing that I think was not fully addressed during that two day visit.

@Dolemite is correct about Thematic Option and that McCarthy is just honors housing, but I think there may also be honors programs within the colleges? I know Viterbi has something, but my son has not seen anything on that yet. It may be called Viterbi Fellows?

The letter did include this info:

Additionally, USC Merit Scholars receive personalized academic and scholarship advising by USC Academic Honors and Fellowships (AHF). AHF staff manages merit scholar exceptional funding, mentor motivated students about university awards and nationally competitive fellowships, and support the Trojan Scholar Society (TSS) in the promotion of a vibrant scholar community. TSS is an exclusive student organization, open only to recipients of our most prestigious merit scholarships, that programs academic, social, and cultural events for your personal and professional development.

@DMV301 —thanks for that helpful hint. Nothing visible here either. Bummer!

This does remind me that I think USC sometimes adds small amounts to their awards for NMF. I thought I recall reading a while back that a student is better off receiving the additional money from USC than the one-time NM award. Assuming that one attends USC, that is.

Thanks @CT1417 and @Dolemite. In regards to viterbi my son asked and they told him they were revamping it this year and had not finalized or accepted anyone into it yet.

@letsshare — Interesting. Did he ask when he was out there?

The entire discussion of Honors was not handled well. I sought out an admission person to ask about it, but the vague response was that students will be notified in April and there is no need to apply.

Did they tell your son when they would be communicating with students?

@CT1417 Here is what USC sent my D regarding the Presidential NMF award:

@CT1417 I agree they were vague about the whole honors thing. They just told him they would notified selected students later on but not time period was given.

Thanks @Dolemite.

That didn’t come today, did it? Clearly I am not doing a very good job of keeping track of this. May be time to start a spreadsheet!

I had completely forgotten about the NM $2500 award, but an additional $4K at USC would help pay for those flights!

Thanks @letsshare. Glad I was not the only one confused.

@DMV301 Nothing for NMF on our son’s portal either.

@CT1417 @LoveTheBard Congratulations to you and your kids on the Trustees scholarship! Yeah, we’re jealous. :slight_smile:

@Dolemite thanks for sharing. That’s awesome. Looks like she is better off turning down the nms scholarship and getting USCs. CONGRATS to your D =D> <:-P

Thanks for the info about NMF! D just checked the portal and she was awarded the $2500 scholarship! Now to see how that will affect her financial aid at her colleges.

@BusyNapping — Congrats! I had not thought about the impact on FA. That would be disappointing.

@BusyNapping – glad to see someone got it. Congrats! Should not impact FA but I know nothing. Would love to hear who else here got that 2500!

This was a great night in our house! My son was accepted at William and Mary, it is between WM and UVA.
My daughter was accepted at UVA also!! She couldn’t log on yesterday so had to wait until tonight.
They both were accepted to 4 schools and wait listed/deferred at 1. I’m so proud of them.
