Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@MotherOfDragons

I saw the movie. Jeff goldblum was an amazing cockroach.

Kids looked at me like I’d lost my ever loving mind when I suggested we watch it

We don;t go back to school until after Labor Day in September so thankfully ds will have sometime to work on some essays, apps and scholarship stuff once his community theater and Driver’s Ed end in a few weeks. I keep impressing on him how much he does not want his senior year bogged down with all of this especially with sports, play rehearsals, ROTC and music. Once school hits I rarely see him home before 9:30 pm.

FTLOG FLY. He was a FLY.

Liberties were taken.

I knew what I meant lol.

Too much Sunday fun day for me

@curiositycat333 I agree about not being “way behind”. D isn’t going to look at anything with regards to applications until August.

If kids get it done early that’s fantastic, but it’s not a tragedy if you don’t start until later. No worries. It’ll get done.

Our kids start back August 4. Oh the humanity! Actually I’m fine with it because they have a fall break that’s pretty sweet because it means we can vacation places when it’s not crowded, or visit colleges.

@jeepgirl could you ask her if the HC essay questions are the same as the ones posted online? For the sake of recommenders, I would really rather her stick with the CO App.

@MotherOfDragons We start back early for similar reasons. It has been so hot, no one wants to go outside. When the weather cools down a bit and schools here start back, we will start going to the beach. No crowds or traffic.

Unfortunately we also need to have major house repairs done and I am going to leave and visit my sister. Her dh has serious dementia, so she will enjoy our invasion bc it will give her a break.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek the questions are the exact same. I was just looking at the LOR requirements for the Honors app, does what they are asking go along with what others schools ask from the LOR writers? This process is all new to us.

D starts back to school August 19. We’re heading off for an extended family vacation (my family) in Vermont on Saturday and will be there one week. Fortunately, UVM is on D’s list and we’ve scheduled a visit. She’ll have the rest of this week plus three weeks before school to work on CA stuff. Hmm, that’s not very long. I hope she really is almost done with the main essay and also that her schools’ supplementals will be out soon.

@HiToWaMom, yep, we’d been expecting this for a while as well. But it’s still pretty exciting when everything is official.

@MotherOfDragons, I only read a few pages, but am definitely bookmarking the Tacky Wedding Things thread. D has talked to me a good bit about the wedding and so far she won’t be guilty of anything in the thread. But it’s going to be a bit of an out-of-the-box wedding so maybe one of the wedding guests will add to that thread next year…

@itsgettingreal17, you may be sorry you made that offer! I’m definitely not a natural party-planner and have certainly never planned (or pulled off) something legendary. Your inbox will fill with increasingly desperate pleas for help as the date nears. Also, did you actually say “triple major, double minor?” Oh my! :open_mouth:

@STEM2017, well, at least there’s still plenty of time to actually complete the “completed essay.” D17 says she’ll let me read hers by Friday. I’ll try to steel myself for 250 words of personal musings.

@kac425, Benedict Cumberbatch read Metamorphosis to me. Best way to experience giant vermin if one must. :bz (this is the closest CC has to a cockroach emoji)
OK, I tried to include the link, but then it opens inside my message. I’m sure anyone interested has the google skills necessary to find it.

School starts 4 Aug here but DD is still working on her IB Extended Essay between 32 hours of work and 8 hours of volunteer hours each week. Where did the summer go?!

We have friends who’s son procrastinated his essays until the last weekend before SCEA deadline for Harvard and he was accepted–I’m holding on to hope that things will get done!

DD goes to Philadelphia to do the researc for her ib ee Aug 3-10, then the actual wrating begins. I am sure it is going to be very painful.

My S is away at camp until 8/16, and starts school less than a week later. He is finding it difficult to write essays while away. He sent me one short essay this weekend that is required for Indiana. They don’t require the common app essay. I must admit, his first draft was not good. I am growing more and more anxious. This kind of writing is not his strength, he will be getting a late start, he will have just under 20 to write. Not sure how he will get it all done. May have to drop some schools of his list. At least Bama did not have an essay, and he has one application done. Maybe, he will get Indiana turned in before end of camp. that will cover his safeties. I am worried about his reaches. Oh well.

Congrats on Wedding news,

We start school Aug 24th… Still feels early because this is the only 2nd year our district has ever started before Labor Day.

When S17 gets back from camp he will have a week to with nothing scheduled but the senior pictures, then 2 weeks of band camp. And during those 3 weeks he has AP homework, practice his instrument, take Online Health (should be easy but…) and start his essays.

@itsgettingreal17: S17 has been told by his HS counselor that there are only two Coalition-only schools for the 2016-17 application cycle- U of Washington and U of Florida.

I read the counselor letter and LOR as the same as what are uploaded to the CA, so I am assuming that if they apply through the CO App, everything can be uploaded for all schools the same way.

@longwood That information is incorrect unless USC has totally changed paths in the past few weeks. When we were there, they definitely told students they could apply via the CO app.

ETA: I just asked dd to send her admissions counselor an email asking. If the list on the CO App website and the information being given out by the universities themselves is not accurate, I feel incredibly sorry for all of the teens who don’t have people involved in this process b/c 2017ers are getting mixed messages in every single direction!

@Mom2aphysicsgeek I think @longwood means Coalition Only - no other app option.

I wonder if UF applicant numbers will go up or down because of this?

Common App essay: Anyone have an opinion on “minimum” acceptable length?

650 words is the max, but how many words do you think would put an essay over the "threadbare " threshold?

Asking for a friend.

@stem2017 Thank you! I totally misread that!

S’s first day back to the last year of HS is August 29. My goal for him is to have his CA essay completed before he stats senior year. No CO app hoops for him thank goodness. He has also has a couple of schools that have their own apps. And then he’ll have a honors college essays. He is really not a creative writer. He is more factual. The essays will take work.

Congrats @snoozn. A wedding is exciting.

Congrats @dfbdfb. I think your D wins the fist acceptance award.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek - What I meant to say, and wasn’t clear about, was that there are only two schools that are using the Coalition App exclusively. That is to say, many are using both Common and Coalition.
