Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@IABooks not sure yet in the Band EC’s, I need to see how it all lays out. I suspect some will need to be combined for space otherwise we could have 10 lines of just band stuff! Very curious to see how others are approaching it.

Which UR?

@rightcoaster I am right there with you. I felt the same way when Dd was asking me how to answer those questions. Heck, I have been teaching multiple grade levels for over 20 yrs. Do I really have to be listed as homemaker? (My income reflects that last part. :wink: )

My DS got RPI email too with a reminder that he is a Rensellear medalist and his application fees is waived.

@RightCoaster “domestic engineer”? free spirit? College admissions consultant?

@flatkansas Unfortunately it is a scroll list. You can’t create an entry. It did bother me, so I know how right coaster feels.

@4beardolls, nothing for you to worry about. It is strictly a homeschooler issue. Boxes and hoops Dd is not willing to jump through.

I wish I could put in whatever I want on that section, lol. My wife probably has a few good ideas for that section but I don’t think profanity is allowed. ( kidding, I think she still likes me).

So, seriously, what do I put? Does it matter? I’m leaning towards retired.

@RightCoaster I’d put retired.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek I understand how frustrating this meeting must have been. Perhaps they are used to bi-lingual kids who have never studied the language formally. Sounds like the professor doesn’t really care to give your daughter the time of day & I would probably cross it off your list.

This whole, need to back and start from scratch mentality is common in out education system. I’m not saying I agree with it. S17 could read at 3, taught himself. Walked into K reading well above grade level. What do the schools say, “he might have missed something” we need to go back and teach him the alphabet. :-/

@RightCoaster I’d put retired, too. There’s nothing saying you can’t un-retire. Or “laundry engineer”.

I think that space isn’t a competition to have the most prestigious title. Less is probably better for some schools that don’t want a bunch of privileged kids.

@curiositycat333 I know. There is a reason we homeschool. :wink:

But, the attitude at Ole Miss was definitely unique to Ole Miss. At UIUC they were encouraging her to only apply to schools with strong grad programs. The extremes are hard to reconcile.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek boooo. help, help, I’m being repressed.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek

I used to try and list myself as a underemployed computer programer. It rarely worked. I should have used retired. I hate the term homemaker, as I spend very little time homemaking. :wink: At least now I’m officially employed for a start-up working for equity. Same salary but more prestige, and less time.

Anyone else text or email their teen while they are in the house? My son thinks it’s weird that I’ve started doing this.

@curiositycat333 I do this all the time. In my defense, our house is leveled and I’m down in the basement so I don’t want to walk upstairs. LoL.

@curiositycat333 I confess that I have texted my kids when we are at home but they are distracted - on their phones – or in another room. They usually ignore me though so I still need to go get their attention. :-@

@RightCoaster - I am now a SAHM but I worked for years as a computer programmer so I have put homemaker or retired. I really don’t think it’s matters…

@curiositycat333 We text in the house all the time. No emailing unless we want to be passive-aggressive in our message. :wink:

Fee waiver alert - Knox College (IL) - CTCL

Anyone looking at Univ. of Tennessee?

** QOTD_ESA ** Anyone planning to withdraw funds from Coverdell ESA account soon (i.e. August 2017) or having done it?
It seems that you just request how much and to wire to which account at the bank/firm. What other steps/documentation is needed?
Does tax time become much more complicated afterwards?

@curiositycat333 All the time. In our defense, I’m usually in the basement and he’s on the 2nd floor. He also seems to remember things I text him better than things I tell him :\
