Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@curiositycat333 I feel like I’m several pages behind, but to answer your question, at S’s school “band” is a class. When they take band, they are required to participate in marching band (which doesn’t get a separate grade, but is at least as time-consuming as his school team sport outside of class) and concert band (which seems to be incorporated into the class as far as practice goes but doesn’t receive a separate grade). They do have section practices outside of class, but I equate this to team project meetings/work for other classes. Jazz band and pep band meet only outside of band class and are optional.

wow, that’s pretty bad. In fact, it’s so bad it makes me wonder, like @Midwest67 , if maybe something was happening to that woman that really affected her that day and it caused the interview to go so badly? I’d at least try and talk to some other people in the department again and get a feel for it in addition to the original professor. Maybe she gets a lot of kids who think they are hotshots but they’re not, really, and once she sees your kid is really that good, she may end up becoming a favorite.

What? %-(

@RightCoaster do they have an option for homemaker? If they wouldn’t let me put Chief Operating Officer of the Dragon Household, I would default to “homemaker” on some stuff that the kids had to fill out. Keeping a household running is tough work! (I know, because it all falls apart every time the semester starts for me). Besides, being a stay at home dad is VERY hip, cool, and millennial.

I did have to re-take 3d design, but that’s because I bombed it and the grade wouldn’t transfer. For the other classes, even with A’s and B’s, I had to show the work and the syllabus (from 1988, luckily I save my work and I could find the syllabus online), and I was pretty, uh, calm but confident in showing how what I’d done matched up pretty well with what they were still teaching.

But it was absolutely not a foregone conclusion and they didn’t care at all that CMU’s art program was ranked WAY higher than theirs is (cough not ranked cough). So yeah, they hold all the cards. Once I got to know the dean of the art department I’ve been WAY more successful in jumping the line to the upper classes.

Today I worked on creating paperwork for the 9 colleges for three areas: Interview, Letters of Recommendation, and what they need beyond the common app (for those on the common app). Man that took way longer than I thought it would. It almost made me toss out one college just to save myself some time, lol.

@curiositycat333 yep I text D17 because she can’t hear me with her giant gamer headphones on.

@curiositycat333 Looking at my string of texts to S, they say “dinner,” “ditto,” “come eat,” “food’s ready,” etc. Methinks he needs to cook for himself more often. :))

At $70 each I think the kid needs to narrow down her UC choices, right now she has Davis, Santa Barbara and San Diego on there. But then I feel like a cheapskate because this is the rest of her life we’re talking about. Aaarrghh.

@curiositycat333 I text too. I text “Time for Bed” from my bedroom upstairs to S19 playing PS4 in the basement at 10:30 PM. I have to do it almost everyday so I copy paste send text :))

@payn4ward there is a way to automatically send out texts at a designated time every day. :wink:

@2muchquan

Vanderbilt - It actually might be a match for the 35/36 ACT kids.
My hypothesis, based on my Tulane visit, is that high ranking privates in the south are more Northern, but idk.

@Gator88NE

Those need-based aid numbers don’t look too bad. Thanks for posting.
Btw, D came back from engineering camp totally intellectually stimulated and 100% dedicated, so no more need to try squeeze business or Econ into her program. Even Yale fell out of favor due to weak engineering offerings.

Two scientists walk into a bar. The first one says “I’ll have some H2O.” The second one says, “I’ll have some H2O too.” The second scientist dies.

What does this mean? Read carefully, and pretend you didn’t take the SAT:

They will take the best score from each section of the ACT in order to create a new composite score. Sounds like the old SAT and they would do the same with only the CR and M sections.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek Shouldn’t “best superscored ACT composite scores” read “best superscored ACT section scores”?

If you superscore the ACT composite, you can only go down. 8->

@Mom2aphysicsgeek I don’t know of any schools that superscore ACT sections to create a superscored ACT composite.

@2muchquan You are correct, you can only go down if the superscore composite is superscored. I think it depends on the school (some require all scores if you sat for the test) or if the student chose to send the scores directly from the testing agency when they sat for the exam. I read it as saying if we get two scores, we’ll superscore them for you. Some schools say they will take the better of the two.

I think you are overthinking.

@2muchquan Not interested in U of Tennessee but did just receive an annoying email from them this afternoon explaining how they had to change S17’s username as they upgraded their VIP system. Please stop. Maybe I’m just cranky today but what’s up with every school coming out of the woodwork to say that the common app is now open and come apply today! No kidding, we already know that and they should stop spamming everyone because literally all some of these emails say is common app is open, apply today.

It was wisdom teeth extraction day. It’s been a long day.

@paveyourpath Some schools do superscores the ACT for a superscored composite: http://blog.prepscholar.com/act-superscore-calculator

@paveyourpath Yes, we have some schools on our list that superscore ACT. I just think the example I posted was poorly worded (shame on you Grinnell).

Ha! Well that’s great for those that are applying to those schools that will allow superscored composites.

Agreed, very poorly worded.

I agree it is poorly worded but few will read into it that much! :wink:

Superscore ACT? Check!
I do get annoyed at such wording frequently, admitting OCD @-)

@CA1543 my ds sent SAT scores back in January to some schools - those schools have reciprocated by sending an email when their rep is in the area (easy way to show interest) and in one case he got an interview with a rep (saved us the cost of a trip just for the interview).

Anyone heard of Knox college?
