Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@MotherOfDragons I should set that up to send “How was your day?” at 9 PM to S17 at his college time zone next fall.
Come to think of it, he may set up automatic “Fine” at 9:01 PM. [-(

“Fine”? Your kid is wordy. My son just responds with “Ok.”

You get an “Ok” ? I only get a thumbs-up emoji.

In postal news, I thought the college mail had petered out but today was a large batch, including tOSU, Clemson, and we actually got the calligraphy card from UChicago (makes me feel like S is one of the cool kids, even if we’ve all figured out its just our $$ zip code).

@MotherOfDragons we will be in Kennesaw. Hubby’s office is near Kennestone hospital. I grew up in Roswell and went to RHS. Mom taught at Milton HS and now lives off Johnsons Ferry

@What!!! -& others — I am wondering when they get ACT or SAT scores – do they get emails and home address info?

Thanks for the reassurance I’m not alone about the texting. It’s a bit silly as we only have a 1-story house with no basement. I’ve started doing this when I’m busy with working & can’t take the time out of a phone meeting to talk. And I’ve sent a text before he wakes up, because I know I’ll be out of the house or busy later. I figure he’s more likely to see a text, than a hand written note.

@IABooks In your case I’d add all the extra’s not concert band as EC’s. Marching Band and any of the other optional parts like Jazz, pep band.

@What!!! (is this user banned I can’t find the username) …

Anyway Knox College was on our list - but I don’t think there is any way we can afford it so I took it off before we spent too much time looking into it.

@stlarenas Don’t think I’m banned - never done anything to offend… Just chose to use !!! On my username and apparently they are hard to find. I think you have to put "after the @ sign? If I could would change my username but I don’t Think CC will let me:(

Can you tell me more about Knox? Never heard of it before ds getting a fee waiver invite to apply

@CA1543 I’m just guessing that they do from the kind of emails ds has got…

Re: colleges matching early scores to SSN. They must use another method as older son took SAT and applied to college without providing SSN.

Re: ten activities on CA. Can’t recall who originally asked about band, but the only ten lines are for three school years abs Summer’s for all ECs, sports, volunteering and jobs. I find the tricky part to be not listing band for first four activities since band consumes most time, but to intersperse other activities. Older son swam year round on three teams but was not a recruited athlete so swimming could not fill his CA activity page even though it was his greatest time commitment.

Reading on mobile and have missed much. Typing on the very wobbly Chicago L

Wow, you guys have been busy! I failed to check CC for a few days and come back to over a thousand messages to catch up on. Well, I’m too lazy to answer all the questions from a few days back, but I will attempt to answer a few from today.

Swag: No college swag here. We fall into the superstitious group that doesn’t want to jinx any results!

My College Choice: If I was going back to college, I would choose Rice University. D visited it for an academic competition, and I loved it! It is absolutely gorgeous, and I love the housing arrangements and everything about it (besides the weather).

Texting: I definitely text the kids when they are in the house. I could use the excuse that we are on different floors, but it is generally just because I’m too tired to go up the stairs to their rooms. Since D has been away from home for a few weeks, she’s been texting me little presidential history facts of the day. Today’s fact: On August 2, 1923, President Warren G. Harding passed away from congestive heart failure in the Palace Hotel in San Francisco while his wife was reading a flattering magazine article to him. I told her that she needs to find some happier facts to share, because these are kind of a downer!

D gets home in a few days and will have to start on her college essays. Her school starts on August 8th, so summer is basically over here. I have to say that the Common App activities section annoys me greatly! The character limits are just too low to properly explain anything or list achievements. Oh well, nothing we can do about it.

@saillakeerie @flatKansas I mostly get “k” [-(
I figured if he is automatizing it he could try to be a little verbose

@CA1543 I think they get both the email address and mailing address when they get the score.
You will get more emails and postcards after scores are sent.

I read somewhere that colleges match the score reports with name, DOB so I assume they get DOB as well. I am no sure if S17 gave SSN to College Board or ACT because he does not know them by heart.

Re going back to college – maybe Tulane or Rice – like both & love New Orleans. But gee how could I pass up Stanford???

@payn4ward – thanks - aw shucks though bc DS’s “regular” email address was on ACT & SAT records - I
changed them just now - after I hit submit on sending the reports, so who knows what email address they will get or use. he does not bother with email much so we set up another account I can monitor for him. He did use the “college” email address though when he signed up on college websites for info.

@disshar that’s so nice that you already have family here-how long have you been gone? If it’s been a while, the traffic is insane now.

We got another Vanderbilt card in the mail and a Tulane one with an application fee waiver. At one point I was going to do an art collage project with all the flyers, but then I got overwhelmed with how many there were and recycled the entire box one day /:slight_smile:

The Vanderbilt and Tulane stuff did actually get her to start poking around on the Common App-I left her working on that a bit ago. I wish Tulane had a better CS department.

@what???!! D got the Richter Select Scholar Research Symposium postcard from Lake Forest College in the mail today. I haven’t gone to the website to figure out what it is yet.

It’s a small LAC on the CTCL list that looks really nice. Maybe if we have time we will drive up and visit. It’s one of the few CTCL LACs within driving distance from us. I just don’t want D to love a school we can’t afford…and when I checked the NPC a while back this one seemed out of reach

Re: Knox

In my opinion, Knox has a distinct personality. I’d highly recommend visiting for those who are interested.

@curiositycat333 Ha! My D texts me at home all the time. I used to ignore it and tell her to come talk to me in person. Not fighting that battle any more. lol

The UC character limit for each work and activity is 160. Yikes. D is struggling with that.

And you have to list each award and the date it was awarded. And you can only list 5 and a 160 character limit. So for example for scholar-athlete for volleyball and swimming league she put June 2016 and in the description noted that she received it every semester. Do you think that’s okay? For the year she won the real Scholar Athlete award first highest GPA on the team, she listed that separately. Even though it has the same name.

I feel like all of her awards are tied to her GPA or test scores and just recognize things that you would already see from looking at those. But I guess there’s not much we can do about that.
