Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@payn4ward —OH, big sigh. Son is at a XC meet at this very moment.

@payn4ward so sad! We never know what life throws at us. Hugs to all the kids doing sports right now.

@MotherOfDragons , not sure if you know this or if you would find it helpful, but you can sign up for a common app account yourself as a parent. It doesn’t link to your DC’s account or anything, and it’s not “real” in that you can’t actually apply anywhere, but you can put your DC’s schools in and see all the supplements etc and fill things out if you want. I like having that option without messing with my D17s actual CA.

Mind if I ask a question about this from a few pages ago? Just as you suggest, we are looking for EA public schools that will help tailor that RD list. But, it looks like GT will not help with that, as decisions don’t seem to come out until January (after the 1/1 deadline for most RD schools). Am I missing something? Any other reachy public schools like GT (other than the obvious state schools which are on rolling admissions) that might provide EA decisions before 1/1?

And @payn4ward – so sorry about that terrible news. From another xc family…

@NerdMom88 You might also take a look at Iowa State for aerospace engineering. Great program and one of the best career fairs in the country. I wish I could get my S interested in it. They have some automatic merit awards and an online calculator to help determine possible merit aid.

@payn4ward So sad. Hugs all round. Hope they make counseling available to the teachers and students. In addition to the tragedy for the family, the death of a friend or student can be really hard on a community.

@Sorrento – ah ha! Well now that just shows how not on top of things I am with this son! I knew that UVa did not release decisions until mid to third week in Jan, but didn’t realize GT was the same. I don’t think I will let on to my son since GT’s Oct 15th deadline will be helpful in making sure he files his Nov 1st apps on time.

I think Michigan still releases decisions before Christmas. They used to be rolling many years back.

My older son applied to a lower tier of schools and also did not apply SCEA so he could apply to privates with EA options.

Are you looking for EA schools that can be used along with ED or SCEA or no constraints?

@payn4ward that is absolutely heartbreaking. S19 is at a meet right now. My prayers are with your entire school community.

@payn4ward – how sad and and difficult for kids there to make sense of. We do sometimes forget how things can change so quickly. Hugs to all affected in any way by this tragedy.

@payn4ward Bummer. We spent a lot of time at XC meets, so I know how close those kids can get because they spend so much time together throughout the year. I hope everyone is able to get through the shock and grief OK.

@CT1417 Yes, exactly. UMich does release their first round of acceptances in December, but it seems that the past several years, they have been deferring many applicants at that point and then admitting bunches slowly after the first week in January. That’s also not very helpful. UVA doesn’t help either for the reason you stated. Looking for others that will (and that DC would be interested in attending)!

Editing to respond to your question: SCEA

@Sorrento is correct… S14 was deferred by UofM engineering in December only to then get in sometime in January… can’t imagine anything substantive happened to the applicant pool in the timeframe, but rather likely just from being inundated by sheer volume of applications…and as I recall he submitted early well before the deadline

@Sorrento – far fewer choices when applying SCEA, due to the wording of the SCEA school’s policy.

Unfortunately, we are in the same boat and don’t have any other suggestions. It will be a long Christmas break in my house!

I still love MIT’s wording:

MIT Early Action is an option for all applicants, domestic and international. Our Early Action isn’t single-choice, binding, or anything like that. If you choose to apply to MIT during Early Action, we do not place any limits on where else you may apply, nor do we require you to attend if admitted (though we sure hope you do!)

However: if you apply to another school during Early Action that does have a restriction, MIT requires that you respect those rules. So for example, if you apply to another school that is “single choice” - meaning that you can only apply there during the early period - you may not simultaneously apply to MIT. But that’s just good manners.

@vandyeyes – that is very interesting. Do you wonder if they just ran out of time and couldn’t read the app, but his stats kept him in the running past the first cut, so they knew they couldn’t reject w/o actually reading his essay?

@payn4ward I am so sorry. We are all runners, so this is close to our hearts. How sad.

@CT1417 what I recall was that our CC at the time was optimistic he would get in and that it was just crazy busy for UofM admissions. Our CC that year had actually worked in admissions at UofM in the past so I knew her thoughts at the time were probably accurate. Also that year was the crazy year (like this one!, just different) with tons of glitches with CommonApp and delays (due to weather, etc) on fall testing results. I really can’t imagine that they got enough fallout from the first rollout of acceptances in mid-December to make a change in how they thought about him 30 days later (essentially over the holidays when the offices are largely closed). I just don’t think they got to his file yet…who knows…it’s all nuts!!

Also @payn4ward sorry for your community’s loss…prayers

Or maybe UM defers and waits on applicants to see who withdraws their apps after possibly receiving good news from their ED/EA schools.

@Sorrento I suppose that is possible…although I believe that the initial release date was very near Xmas (I’m thinking around Dec 23rd) which was well after most ED dates (7-10 days earlier) so in theory those folks should have pulled out before the FIRST release…again the whole flippin’ process is all so speculative…you just have to consider this whole deal a ticket for a ride at the amusement park…we just have to sit back and try to enjoy the ride…at least a little bit X_X

@payn4ward So sorry for the loss that your community and the poor family has suffered. Hoping and praying for peace and healing.

Interesting thread for all of you folks in the Honors chase. Seems the latest edition of Top Honors is available…

I plan to buy the book.

@payn4ward I am headed out to a xc meet with DD20 is just a couple of hours. Hugs to you and your community.
