@CA1543 Yes, S17s school is private and the seniors are to finalize essays this week. Makes me very happy. Tomorrow is college guidance day for seniors. Juniors and Sophmores take the PSAT in the morning.
QotN - School started on an old CC campus in 1991 and moved to it’s current, then new, campus in the late '90’s. It’s one of three main high schools in an all high school district. The other two were founded in 1954 and 1899.
Congrats to your daughter @Mom2aphysicsgeek, that is great news.
Not sure about the PSAT here. Last year it was during school. So not ready to start this whole process again with D19. @STEM2017 you are so far ahead of me with kid #2!
Congratulations @Mom2aphysicsgeek <:-P <:-P
Congrats @Mom2aphysicsgeek! That is exciting! Moscow is a fascinating place.
D17 was bragging last night that she is ahead in all of her classes and is feeling good about it…as she watches TV…and I said, ‘what about those essays?!?’ Ugh! I wish I had a partially formed frontal cortex so I too could take a break from worrying about all of this!
She has a reachy reach lottery school with three essays getting ahead of some safety/matches. I have tried to knock it off the list forcefully and subtly and she won’t budge. This is the quality in my kid I love unless I’m the object of it’s wrath.
My mantra now is that deadlines will come regardless of what we do and things will take care of themselves.
Was anyone able to submit a housing app at Ole Miss? I’m confused about their instructions.
I’m so behind on the housing app thing. My kid is going to be sleeping in a van down by the river.
The Ole Miss housing thing is so confusing. @itsgettingreal17 what dorms does your d like? D lived in Lucky Day this summer and really liked the arrangement w private baths. The rooms in that style building are huge!
@Mom2aphysicsgeek Congratulations! You must be so proud! What an incredible opportunity!
@WhereIsMyKindle Residential College South
I know that has a separate app in Jan but I figure she should still deposit now.
@Mom2aphysicsgeek Congratulations!!! I hope your D gets the funded study abroad year as well. What a wonderful validation of her talent and hard work
@vandyeyes Congrats on the applications - feels good, doesn’t it?
@dfbdfb Regarding essay length, does she have to fill the length? FWIW, my D wrote a standard 250 word essay for one school and then discovered that the maximum length was 800 words. One of the GCs liked the short, snappy approach. She said it might minimize reader fatigue on the other end. D will add a little, but not too much.
PSAT? I think it’s today. The school pays for all sophomores and juniors to take it.
Progress? Senior pictures. Strong quarterly grade report. I helped a friend’s daughter with her essays, hopefully to good effect.
Poor D has a bad cold and feels miserable.
PSAT - our public high school did Wednesday last year bc no other option but this year no PSAT at school - students take it on Saturday if they want to.
D received a quick response from Ole Miss housing. The student needs to activate their Ole Miss gmail account and there will be an email there with further instructions.
@STEM2017 @hadmeathello I graduated from UD many moons ago. It was a great school, beautiful campus, nice people, strong academics. Even years later having to go back and deal with them when I went to grad school I found everyone very pleasant and willing to help. I loved it there and so did most of the people I knew there! It’s been awhile but I remember my fist visit there, I knew it was the school I wanted to go to. I think I even filled out the application in the car on the way home (wow have time sure changed).
We haven’t nor have we tried. But quite a number of small LAC schools I toured with D12 talked about their housing requirement. Many had a 25-40 mile radius at which they would “wave” the housing requirement but for those it needed to be the house they were living in while in H.S. or that parents lived in or some such detail. Or they would wave it if the student was married because they didn’t have married/student housing. And when we looked 5 years ago San Jose State was requiring fresheman who matriculated outside their ‘catchment’ district to live in the dorms.
I would check details with each school. And if you are only a mile or two above the limit I would think you might be able to apply for a dispensation. The one school we talked about this in detail was around 40 miles away and their limit was ~25 miles. We were well over their limit.
Commuting 40 miles sounds miserable.
QOTN: The oldest operating school in our district is ~105 years old. S’s school is 10 years old.
FWIW, S commutes 20 miles each way to high school. It isn’t bad.
Our HS alsways has held the PSAT on Saturday.
Yeah, but high school activities, for the most part are confined to the daytime, I don’t know, I just can’t imagine being 40 miles away from my college. The furthest I lived was 2 blocks off campus.
Since it’s PSAT day, here’s a head start for a new thread for the class of 2018:
Does anyone know the NMSF cutoff score for ?
Why are the scores taking so long to come out?
Our son was way too relaxed about this whole application process last night so we had to impress upon him how stressed we are about the process and to get cranking.
