Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

I wish D were more relaxed. She’s putting way too much pressure on herself :frowning:

@youcee - here is a list of all of the PSAT cutoff scores for 2017: http://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/national-merit-semifinalist-cutoffs/
(let’s see if the link holds)

No in school PSAT here, I think only 15-20% of kids even take it, my daughter didn’t.

Our school is like 15 years old I think?

Wow, I am still so far behind, don’t know if I will be able to catch up. Anyhoo, welcome to all the newcomers. All freshmen, sophomores and juniors are taking the PSAT at our school today (though that’s only about 250 students), so D19 gets her second crack at the PSAT. D17 doesn’t have to come to school until after lunch. Says she will be working on some essays, but we’ll see. Went to a DiscoverUSC(al) presentation Monday night. Didn’t really learn anything new, but D was glad she went because she was able to talk with one of the associate deans of the business school. Deadline for scholarship consideration is December 1st, and there really isn’t a rush to complete the app early, so D19 is taking her time with their short answers and supplements. Trying to encourage her to get her UKy app in, so she can join the rest of you with acceptances in hand. Good luck to all C18s taking the PSAT today!

@mtrosemom Sorry, I was just trying to be funny. I guess my sarcasm/humor didn’t come through.

Has anyone gotten a decision from UKy already? D’s app was complete at end of last week and today she got an email that honors college has her app. Seems to have skipped a step.

Anyone else trying to be nosy on Naviance - looking to see what Apps have been submitted for 2017? Maybe the GC should suppress that info because it might be giving away too much info if you look at the right screen.

I sent a letter asking for an exemption to the housing requirement. We’ll see what they say.

The commute would be 32 miles - all nice county highways with no traffic. I pointed out that we’re 32 miles away, we have family that live 5 blocks from campus who will house her, We lived and worked in the town for many years before moving to our current place. My husband graduated HS from that town and I even attended that college as a freshman and sophomore. If we could afford it, I wouldn’t ask. I’d prefer the on-campus environment but that just isn’t a possibility.

@Dolemite - Not much info in our Naviance. I guess after Nov1st we may see some info.

@WhereIsMyKindle - I’m not sure if they still do this but the IU swag might get better. When DS13 got into the honors college they sent a red and white knit scarf with IU on it. It was really a nice scarf.

Is anyone paying the enrollment/housing deposit at Ole Miss? DS still hasn’t completed his scholarship essays and I just can’t see paying it until he does…

@youcee, Since I was rushing through the many, many posts I missed the sarcasm! :((

I would not be surprised if the PSAT thread were already up!

@MichiganGeorgia D’s housing slot is tomorrow and I will be putting down the deposit. She has submitted everything, and we are awaiting on honors, Arabic, and scholarship decisions. But Ole Miss is D’s safety and other options are lotteries so depositing at the sure thing. We won’t make any other housing deposits until D makes a final choice.

@Dolemite Yes! Off to check again since haven’t checked in a while.

@dolomite, The GC has the application portion of Naviance turned off for now at our school. Can’t even see how many applied and got in from past years in table format. I am guessing that it will be reactivated after the RD applications are submitted.

Not much interesting information on Naviance. D isn’t applying to many schools that are popular at her hs. So far, she has some competition at Pitt for merit from a friend who also applied and really wants to attend. The two of them really have skewed the stats for Pitt for future students. Not much competition anywhere else so far.

@itsgettingreal17 wahhhh no tell her friend not to apply lol! All Texas competition to Pitt needs to withdraw the app! :((

No one else from our school even has it on the radar.

@carachel2 Our district has PSAT mandatory for sophomores. Only high scoring juniors take it (I don’t have the stats but would guess at 30% of the class). They have delayed opening for the people not taking the test

No one from our school has applied for PITT in ages, but DS applied (due to GAP program).

Our HS has all frosh, soph, and juniors take the PSAT.
