Congratulations on Purdue Engineering @carachel2 <:-P <:-P
Congratulations on S’s goal! <:-P <:-P

Congratulations on S’s goal! <:-P <:-P
@payn4ward you’re the best, thank you!
@IABooks … I think it makes sense even if no HC yet. It holds their spot on the priority list. They don’t actually select until later (that’s my understanding at least)
@STEM2017 — ok that makes me a little misty eyed! We are a small family but we typically have a big Sunday meal and we enjoy the leftovers for days. D has already talked about making a roast for her suitemates(if she can get access to a full kitchen lol!).
I love that it means so much to her.
@jmek15 I think UMD really only wants a sentence. D did hers during the Olympics so her Monday reflection was about that.
How exciting about Purdue! Congratulations!!! That one’s on our list too!
One more lame question… with ACT is there not an option like with SAT to send all scores? Do I have to send each test score individually?
@socalmom007 no, you have to send by test date. So you can send one test date to xx schools all at once but then have to repeat the process to send another test date.
@carachel2 Congrats on Purdue Engineering!!!
@IABooks as the stepmom to a midfielder/defender, I know how fabulous those goals can be. Congrats!
@STEM2017 I love that answer! I could only wish my child had something so warm and fuzzy to write about. Instead I believe we are featured in his essay in maybe not the most flattering (albeit I think understandable and quite humorous to some) way.
Ha! I hear what you’re saying, but it’s those threads that were an integral part in the making of our list in the first place. So, hopefully nothing is a surprise. They confirmed D’s stats were in range.
Congrats @carachel2 on Purdue. Here’s hoping a double-Stamps scholarship for your D!
And the oscar goes to the S of @MichiganGeorgia !!! <:-P
@carachel2 Congrats to the (potential) future boilermaker. A great engineering school
Anyone else who got applications in waaaaaaaay early feel like they may have benefited by waiting a little while? I feel like my D ‘gets it’ so much more now. I feel like her essays would have been stronger had she written them today, rather than 2 months ago. But, I guess it’s a moving finish line. If she started writing them today, she wouldn’t ‘get it’ until December.
I just feel like she would have benefitted more if she had ‘gotten it’ earlier. Not sure she realized what was at stake in the beginning, and now she is seeing all her friends working on stuff and she has renewed focus and wants to do well, rather than just ‘get it done’. Her essays were strong in the beginning, but I think they’ve gotten stronger.
Can we please have those Pitt short answers back! :((
@hadmeathello – my kid is just not that wild about such a big school, but we are insisting on one app to a public EA option that might possibly result in an acceptance before 1/1 deadlines, thereby easing the stress over the holidays as remaining apps get finalized. And if it’s a “no,” that might also indicate the 1/1 list needs to be adjusted downward. #-o
Has anyone else applied to UChicago EA? My daughter just received a t-shirt in the mail with no letter. Hope that means they like her! It’s our first “swag” item, so it’s kind of cool. D insists she can’t wear it until she’s accepted or it will jinx her
@chillkitty S17 just submitted EA to UChicago on Saturday…no swag as yet…
@DMV301 Sounds like you are describing a ‘Safety’? Not sure too many people have UofM as a safety, unless maybe you’re at one of the in-state feeder HS’s, I suppose.
That said, I’m pretty sure my D would have gotten in too. Good luck. I loved it there!
@carachel2 – Awesome news about Purdue engineering - I have heard great things about it & of course it is highly ranked. <:-P
@carachel2 Woohoo on the new acceptance!
@hadmeathello I’m completely with you re: essays. D’s most recent essays are stronger than the earliest ones, but that is to be expected given the amount of practice she’s had and additional self-reflection. But her early ones were also very good. She’s a strong writer. We’ll see if they were good enough in the next couple of months.
@hadmeathello – Re: improvement in essays over time. I think you nailed it. If there hadn’t been a 10-15 deadline, my son would never have finished his CA essay. After submitting, I thought of a way to use the Additional Info section. He is still resisting me a little but I will try to convince him to see the merit of my opinion. This will also result in slight changes to the Activity section, and yes, the 10-15 app would have been stronger with these changes, but if the 10-15 app had never gone in, we probably would not have thought of the changes.
It is just taking him SO LONG to write and revise. I swear…cutting the 650 word CA essay down to 500 for MD took all of Friday evening. And then WAY too much time on another school’s essay Sat & Sun, when he should really have been working on the big 11-1 app. I had hoped the MD & Michigan would have been filed already…but no, still three looming.
The big one for 11-1 is ridiculous: Two 100 word blurbs, two 200 word, several 35 word responses and then the 500 for that school, independent of the CA essay. Come on already…
DD has submitted all her apps (5 total) :-bd - now needs to get to work on the Honors College app, the scholarship apps, finishing her Gold Award, getting the robot for fall competition season going, and so much more! She looked at me the other day & just said “I’m tired” in that quiet voice & asked when she would have free time again. I try to tell her that if she can keep up this year, she won’t know what to do with herself next year at college!
I almost don’t have to heart to warn her of all the scholarship competitions that will be coming in the middle of FRC robot season! :-S
How do you give your child a break without really giving them a break?
@IABooks wrote
Like @carachel2 , the way I understood it was that it was straight up first come, first serve, honors or no. The only exception was if your kid made it into the Blount Scholars, and they have their own house freshman year. H is still salty that I basically blew $500 that I will either never see again or only see some of. I say it was worth it for her never to end up in the Tower O’ Women.
For the UMD app D17 put something along the lines of last monday I was in school because Columbus didn’t actually discover america. She had some other stuff about Columbus being a rapist and a pillager and some other unsavory stuff. I asked her to take the raping and pillaging out, pointing out that she didn’t need to give the poor reader a case of the heebie jeebies over a short answer.
I don’t think we’ve found the spot on the UMD application where she could put her activities resume. We’ll look again this weekend. Then again, come to think of it, I think we might have because it was its own app, not part of the Common App.
She forgot to pester her teachers about their LOR’s. Which is fine because that means I get to pester HER. >:)
@hadmeathello no, I don’t think my kid would have been helped. There just would have been a lot more drama and yelling going on if she’d procrastinated. Mostly at me. So I very selfishly chunked up all of her to-do lists and spread them out evenly so I’d get less flack about the entire process, lol.
@chillkitty no apps to U Chicago, seems like a cool school but not really where D wants to go location-wise.
I had three crits today (where we all judge each other’s completed artwork) and forgot to bring in half my stuff for one of them (supporting material). Which reminds me, I still haven’t submitted it online. Crap! Too much school stuff for me, it’s like juggling with a zillion bowling balls and flaming bags of poo some days…
