Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@itsgettingreal17 My dd’s thoughts on those UKy questions were that they were testing to see if kids actually read the questions. I think she said the obvious was response was all (I think yes) except for one question thrown in there that was the opposite answer. If a student started reading them and they were all coming out yes, if they stopped reading and just checked the boxes…gotcha.

@payn4ward we recently refinanced so I used that as we had decent comps and can back it up (though honestly I do believe it would sell for more). I did read not to use the assessed value, they expect you to use market value.

Figuring out current value of savings bonds was annoying enough I can’t imagine dealing with calculating pension, although I am mildy stressed I should have. However it was rather specific about the kinds of retirement savings it wanted and pensions were not mentioned.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek I have seen psych test that are like this where they throw in questions that are nothing like all the rest of the questions. In stead of vague, how do you feel about this. They questions were more factual. Clearly they were there to check and see if you were really reading the questions.

@eandesmom - For what school profile here pensions not mentioned? We just started working on ours, and it specifically states they want information about “employer-sponsored retirement plans.”

My D had her MIT interview a few weeks ago, he unnerved her by saying he has only had 2 of his interviewees accepted, but other than that they had a very relaxed conversation and discussed a variety of things like books. He encouraged her by saying he thought she was a good fit. She will apply RD due to their deferral rate. We’d rather an informative rejection than a deferral.

CSS - Did not include the pension, just 457, 401k, etc. Supposedly this is just an indicator of your financial strength, they don’t expect you to use it to fund college. For home value, we put a value a little bit lower than the value on our property taxes :^o .

@LoveTheBard I took that to mean IRA, 401k, etc. not pension. The pension isn’t a tangible asset I can print a report on, or liquidate if need be. The others are.

@snoozn oh my goodness!

I remember reading somewhere about interior and exterior loci. If I remember correctly it’s good to have the interior one. The one marshmallow now vs two later experiment springs to mind.

Rose human isn’t on her list, but at this hour of the morning I can’t remember why. Probably location or size.

@curiositycat333 when we bought our house 8 years ago we paid the tax value, so we’ll probably use that. The zillow estimate is ludicrous. Nobody in the neighborhood is getting that number for their house.

Sat 2 out today. It’s stressful because a good number keeps her in the game, but bad ones knock her out of contention for MIT and olin.

Oh, great. The Math 2 score is missing :frowning: Bio is there, but not math. Never easy in our world.

Oh, wait, no, it’s there, just on a different page than the original log in… Ohhh, it’s below 700. That changes things. sigh

Done with testing!! Good SAT Physics result. Hope all our DCs did well. Feels good to have this closure.

@MotherOfDragons Sorry about the SAT 2 scores. Your D should go for it! If you don’t apply, you have 0 chance of getting in.

@snoozn Yikes! :open_mouth:

My Dd told me last night that one of the girls in her youth group was extremely upset bc she had just gotten rejected from Auburn. (It was her top choice.) She told Dd that she had a 1520 SAT score and had applied to MIT, Norte Dame, etc. She said she even called admissions and asked it there was some mistake, and they said no.

I am wondering what on earth caused them to reject her. She is devastated. :frowning:

@Mom2aphysicsgeek Wow! Something odd there for sure. I wouldn’t think Auburn would care about protecting their yield, so it’s probably something else about her app. Homeschooler?

Getting stressed about all these completed apps! We are still at 2 complete with 11 to go and the looming 11/1 deadline for 2 of them.

D17 is having a essay-thon this weekend. DH is going out of town while D17 and I are eating, sleeping, writing/editing essays and nothing else in this house. So tired of having these apps hanging over our head.

@itsgettingreal17 No, not a homeschooler. She is in a local IB program. I wouldn’t think Auburn would be protecting their yield, either. I don’t know her grades, but with the other schools she applied to, I would think they can’t be too bad for Auburn.

Stories like that scare me – yikes!

@DMV301 Ditto!

@Mom2aphysicsgeek Someone (private counselor, adult) could take a look at her complete application folder first and then GC or Principal can call Auburn to find out what happened for their future applicants? and for her other applications?

DS got 730 in US History which is his 4th SAT II. The other 3 are math and sciences and 800s in all. Is it worth sending US History score?

@srk2017 I personally think 3 800s are more than good! If he has APUSH at a 5, that is probably better than the SAT 2 score.
