We’re discussing whether or not to do the Olin one right now. In retrospect, we screwed up by sending the report to Olin before knowing the number (because Olin considers if submitted but does not require SAT 2). Her other numbers fall in line with Olin, and she liked Olin when she visited, and they’re RD, so I think instead of having her get it done before Thanksgiving (our original “be done” target date), I’ll just leave all the college talk alone until after we hear back from the EA applications, and then she can go from there where her heart leads her.
If you look at the common data set for MIT, those numbers make the odds look impossible for her getting in-it’s supposed to be “holistic”, but not holycowlistic. I don’t think her supplemental stuff and other numbers are going to be enough to offset that SAT 2 number. But I think it is always good to shoot big for stuff as long as you recognize that you’re not going to make all of them. She’s still disappointed, though, and I am sad for her.
@payn4ward I asked Dd if she thought she could suggest having her GC call and find out what happened. Her response was no way that the young lady would even consider it. I guess after her phone call with admissions that she said she is done with them.
Popping in to say hello. We had a rough few months beginning in May when my mom tripped in her garden and broke her hip. Then we lost Max’s dad in August and my mom last week. Add in all the college stuff and it’s been CHAOS here at Headquarters. Gotta laugh, right?
Anywho… some good news for a change! Spykid did well on the SAT and his score puts him above the median at his top choices. I have been so overwhelmed with hospitals, taking care of my mom’s place (and her cat), dealing with funeral services etc that I haven’t filled out the FAFSA or the CSS but it’s on my list this week. We’re not going to qualify for any aid so fingers crosse for merit.
@Mom2aphysicsgeek stories like that are terrifying. They make one question an entire list for fit and probability to be sure. There must have been something in the app that for whatever reason wasn’t what they wanted. It is so hard to know or understand some of these decisions. I would definitely check in with the GC but if her GPA matches that score, it would help the HS to understand what happened as unless it really was a terrible essay I can’t even imagine.
However, I hope she knows that this rejection doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a shot at her other choices. I’ve a good friend who’s D was WL at Harvard, admitted to USC and Notre Dame both for engineering…and not admitted to engineering at our in state flagship. She was admitted to the school but not her program.
@Agentninetynine I am so so sorry for your losses. That is a lot all at once. I hope you are finding time to take care of you in the midst of all of this. Hugs.
My son took a Greyhound home for the weekend (650 miles), has had a ton of issues (he says he’ll tell me everything when I see him, who knows what’s happened) and the bus is currently stopped waiting on State Troopers to arrive because two passengers got into a fight and one pulled out scissors and threatened the other. He’s supposed to get in at 6am. Please pray he gets home safely!
(Needless to say, we’re NEVER doing this again!)
Update 6:25am EST: I just got word that they are now broken down on the side of the road and waiting on a new bus. Lord help us!
Update 9:15am EST: He’s still waiting on a new bus! Almost 3 1/2 hours late so far
@Agentninetynine – so so sorry to hear what you have been though and really feel for you. Congrats to Spykid on the good SAT score. You are filling out FAFSA & CSS even though no aid will be forthcoming? I thought it really did not matter for merit scholarships at colleges - have not been prepared to do those. Hang in there.
@Agentninetynine I am so sorry for your losses. =((
It will take time to feel normal again. Every week find a time to pray, remember, laugh and cry. And then when you feel ready, maybe in a few months, do that once a year.
My thoughts are with you and family. =(( [-O<
@snoozn My son labored over the Rose-Hulman questions. I sat with him and helped him to answer in a way that would make him appear like an attractive candidate. Most of his answers were genuine, but the process was very disingenuous, I admit. Also very creepy, I agree.
I checked the various boxes that we have state-sponsored or employer-sponsored retirement plans but did not dare to guess the value of future defined benefit pension. I reported the sum of all other retirement plans. It involved calling the various financial companies and getting balances by machine voices - old tech telephone rules! - website logins and security questions fail.
@Mom2aphysicsgeek I think she should still have the GC check with the school. If there is a mistake in the app, the same mistake might have gone to other schools as well. In this case, if GC can find out and share with her, she might have a chance to correct with other schools. I’ve heard horror stories such as kids mixed up “why xxx school” essays…
@snoozn That IS creepy.
This reminds me a psych test/evaluation everone got as a freshman. It was looooong and maybe 10 pages of such questions.
A few classmates were asked to return for counseling. They randomly bubbled in a few minutes and ran out the door. They must have bubbled yes on suicidal thoughts. =))
@MotherOfDragons Sorry to hear about her SAT Math2. Hugs. =(( =((
Has she done practice tests in the blue CollegeBoard books?
Does she want to try again in November or December for RD?
