Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

I have not completed the CSS yet, but I plan to answer to the best of my ability in a timely manner, and if I forget that $1000 bond in a box in the basement, so be it. I’m not refinancing my house, so pulling the info together for a re-fi took a couple of hours. I really don’t plan to spend more time than that. Time to time box. In the end, for us, it won’t mean the difference between aid and no aid, or admission or no admission (I don’t think).

I’ve been good…better than usual. I told D to check her SAT II score (Physics) and didn’t check it before her. She attempted briefly at breakfast on her phone, but couldn’t quickly find the link, so said she’d check later. That killed me. Really? And so I wait.

D '17 got her SAT score and it looks to me it will confirm her NMSF. According to the may 9, 2016 concordance table, it concords to one point lower than her ACT so I don’t have to pay to send it anywhere else. We did have the scores automatically sent to Pitt and U of K. She took one subject test, so we will have to strategically consider whether to send the scores anywhere.

I’d love to say that’s it, no more money to the college board, but come AP time they get another $600 out of me.

U of K app says they are still waiting on ACT and SAT, so we will see how that goes.

Activity resume, 4 supplements in the editting queue. Hope to submit the two 11/1 EA apps tonight or tomorrow.

Onward and Upward.

@snoozn @STEM2017 I think what bothers me the most about those questions is how insulting the are to the kids and as a weed out factor.

They know full well their target candidate has enough common sense to choose the “right” answer, whether they believe it to be true or not. They may honestly believe for example, that a teacher really does have it out for them and there’s nothing they can do to recover from that impression. Or, they might actually have taken a class just because it’s easy. They aren’t going to necessarily admit to that to a college on an application knowing full well it doesn’t reflect well on them.

@payn4ward that is exactly what I did, minus the phone calls, I have screen shots or printed statements from all of our retirement accounts, which are all (or were in the case of M&A account changes) employer sponsored.

Where is that Hugs button? @Agentninetynine Welcome back, and I’m so sorry for your losses.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek That is crazy about your D’s friend and Auburn. It’s so easy to say that if they don’t like my kid, we don’t want to go there, but it’s so discouraging to get a rejection from a top choice when you expect the opposite.

@snoozn I’m also creeped out by those questions. And I also don’t see the point – as you say, those applying to RH should know which answers to choose for the most part.

@mommdc - None of the schools ask for a humanities SAT II, but DS is trying to show that he is not just another STEM kid

@Agentninetynine my condolences for you and your family. Hugs

Is Rose-Hulman known for big MAC?

@IABooks I use the ‘Helpful’ link for ‘Hugs’. I believe that is unwritten CC convention. It can seem really weird, tho.

@snoozn That is pretty creepy! I had no idea schools ever asked anything like that.

@Agentninetynine So sorry you’re having to deal with so much right now. Wishing you and your family all the best.

@MotherOfDragons Ugh, re: Math2. Hugs to your D! Mine was scheduled to take it in November but has decided to skip it for her own sanity.

I’m trying very hard not to stress and transmit said stress to D - she still has not polished her CA essay, she’s balking on it and I’m worried if I push too hard she’s just going to crack. :expressionless:

@Agentninetynine So sorry that you have to go through so much… Hugs your way!!!

@MotherOfDragons Hugs to your D too. MIT or no MIT, she will have great choices next Spring!

It’s nice to have you back @Agentninetynine. Sorry for all of your losses.

S is still on the one app submitted list. One more should be completed by Monday (EA). I told him that I’d like the other done before Thanksgiving. And then there are the honors college apps and the scholarship apps… Sigh.

So someone help me. I want to know how to figure out if S’s SAT score will confirm for NMF. What do I have to do for this year because the very polite person I called at the NMC wasn’t as much help as they had been in the past!

@CA1543 nice to have an interview out of the way I’m sure!

@snoozn oooooo - dislike!

@Mom2aphysicsgeek that sucks for her (friend applying to Auburn)… sometimes it’s just a crap shoot out there, that’s why nothing is really a safety anymore! maybe they think she’ll likely choose a more competitive school…

@Agentninetynine I am so sorry for your losses.

@hadmeathello So now I’m in the weird quandary of wondering if you’ll misinterpret my indication your post was helpful. (It was. I hadn’t picked up on that, so thank you for spelling it out for me.)

@mtrosemom You have to figure out the SI, and all NMC will say is that the cutoff won’t be higher than a 209 SI. (Guess where we’re sitting – S is retaking in November.) So, add the three 2-digit scores together for writing, reading and math, and then multiply the sum by 2. Fingers crossed your S is well above 209!

@MotherofDragons Hugs to your D – I know she will have plenty of great choices!

@montrosemom, NMSC has not released an official confirming score yet.

^Read this quote from a FAQ from above website.

@hadmeathello I don’t think Rose-Hulman is known for Big MAC. In fact, it’s unlikely son will go even if accepted. He applied because it was free and simple. But hey, you never know.

Speaking of free, we have a small stack of unused fee waivers to colleges that don’t precisely fit his profile. With Nov 1 looming, they are tempting.

Stay focused. Stay focused.

Thank you @IABooks and @mommdc. Both methods got the same “SI”, which is higher than 209. He should be good. #:-S

Dumb question… Why the confirming score is the commented not the NMSF cut off?

I wonder how much SAT score influences receipt of the $2.5K NM Scholarship? D took the old SAT and submitted the free report to NM (it was high enough to confirm) but she did better on the new one. I wonder if we should have submitted the new one to improve scholarship chances?

@Agentninetynine So sorry for your losses. Please take care of yourself.
