QOTD: No trick-or-treating from D17 or D19 here—they’re handing out candy. D23 and D25, on the other hand, will be, though it’s questionable whether their costumes will be visible beneath the often-obligatory-for-here snowsuits…
@MotherOfDragons Different browser won’t help as it’s maintenance and the system is down. It’s not the HS, it’s the college portal site where you check the status of your app.
Weekend plans here to get Nov 1 app submitted, more SAT II practice and have a quiet weekend. I’m glad I chose to reschedule the Oct 5 SAT subj tests for next weekend. He is much more relaxed with 4 apps done.
Sorry for all of you and your family members who are under the weather. We just have to hang in there another couple of months.
No schools falling off the list…yet. GC’s at S17’s school made an excellent recommendation. Get through round 1 (whether it’s the apps due by 11/1 or 11/15 and then take a hard look at the list and see what adjustments are to be made. Then spend the next 3 weeks finalizing all apps.
Be sure to find out your GCs schedule. Our GCs told us all apps should be submitted by the start of the Christmas break and that they will not be available once that break begins. School will be closed, they will not be checking email and they will not be taking calls. Fair enough, they have families too and to be on call every single year would be unfair. The next time they are available is Jan 4. I’m glad I only have to go through this once.
@MotherOfDragons Thanks. I had not seen those. I’ll have to look into them more.
@learnin welcome!
Welcome! Unless WSU is a safety or school your S loves, I can’t see the reason over other options. Nor would I think there would be a rush, it’s rolling until 1/31 and they seem to notify kids pretty quickly.
@dfbdfb, I remember a few Halloweens where my kids had to wear costumes over snowpants. But also a few where we didn’t need a jacket. With all the rain and cold wind lately, I was glad that today was beautiful, sunny and 70F.
@STEM2017 thanks, yes, to do is blank, so they have everything!
Ok @MotherOfDragons , why do the moderators have you under lock and key? How long is this punishment and how is it a punishment if you can still post? I should probably look back at the rules but I’m kind of lazy and for the life of me I can’t recall anything you’ve said that would have warranted an admonishment from the moderators.
Two more applications submitted this evening!
Now she’s switching to scholarship/honors applications and essays, with one or two Jan RD schools hanging on.
@eandesmom, I hope your house is bug/allergy-free soon.
@payn4ward, we haven’t had a single trick-or-treater for the 16 years we’ve lived here – may have something to do with being at the end of a dark, curvy mountain road. But I always buy a bag of candy just in case!
@thermom, wow those sound like amazing costumes! I used to make somewhat elaborate costumes for the kids when they were younger. None of them have really caught the make-your-own bug though.
QOTD: No trick or treating here as D has to work late. I’ll hand out candy. I need to remember to buy after work on Monday.
Weekend plans are recovering from a quick trip to IU. And tomorrow go to D20s first gymnastics meet of the club season. Hopefully she can qualify for the state meet, since next week she starts HS gymnastics, and puts club on the back burner for a couple months. This also means no schlepping her to the gym, 30 mins away, 4 days a week.
IU trip was good. We did a tour, followed by a meet-and-greet event put on by the Office of Scholarships in a tent by the football stadium. Talked with lots of students, and several of the staff from both Admissions and School or Arts and Science…where D was accepted into. We then attended (some
) of the football game against Maryland. It was almost 80 degrees! Crazy.
D came away with just an ‘ehh’ impression. I thought they could have packaged the tour with the main event much better. Tour was very, very average. Not targeted at all. Didn’t see a dorm. After the football game we wandered around the part of Bloomington just off campus (Kirkwood Ave around Dunn and Indiana Ave.). Lots of kids spilling out of the bars, having a lot of ‘fun’.
No trick or treating by D17. I think D20 will go, since I came home to a Tinkerbell costume hanging by the door. D17 described a couple parties that some of her friends and classmates were Snapchatting about. I still don’t understand why kids Snapchat videos that either show them drinking, or show them being just stupid-drunk. D17 just shakes her head.
@learnin Welcome!
At least snapchatting them means they’re somewhat private, and won’t come up when potential employers Google them in the future…
No trick or treating but we will hand out the candy. GOT big bag from Costco.
@chillkitty you are not allowed to discuss it
@ hadmeathello good luck at the meet tomorrow! funny about snapchat, that is def big around here. My D is kinda done with her friends this year (or I should say they’re done with her) I feel a little bad for her, I think she’s just outgrown them, shame really!
Trick o Treat - no one comes to our house either, we are in a very dark neighborhood, D plans to dress up for school and head to gmas to give out candy this year. 1st year she probably wont end up trick or treating!
@thshadow IIs that true? Can’t someone save the snapchat and post it? I don’t know much about snapchat but I have seen enough stupid videos as @hadmeathello describes to know these kids have a false sense of security.
Fonts? Comic sans for the win! I wish all of my post could use this annoying font. Really sends the right message, that I’m a poster of rare intellect and style…
Wait a minute! Looks like I figured it out fonts! I wonder how many “comic sans” post it will take before it drives @dfbdfb mad, 4, 5?
@thshadow Pictures from Snapchat videos can be saved by viewers (as my D explained it to me), so not entirely true.
@gator88NE fonts! Someone tell me how to use palatino everywhere.
@paveyourpath when we used google chrome she couldn’t get into the MIT website one day (several days into her working on it), it kept saying down for maintenance like, for days. We switched to firefox and it was working again-but still “down” when we tried to access ith through google. It was very weird. I think this was back in August.
We have 30 lbs of candy and we are locked and loaded. :D.
I used to make CRAZY costumes for them (like dragons with 8 foot articulated wings), but they’ve transitioned to making their own costumes now. They are wizards with hot glue, cardboard, makeup and paint.
Snapchat is not as private or ephemeral as the kids think. There are apps to screenshot and capture everything the snapchatter puts out there. So, yeah. Internet=forever.
@MotherOfDragons That is so strange. Good to know so thank you for sharing.
30 lbs of candy? That’s will be a busy night at your house. I am not getting the candy until later this afternoon so I don’t eat it all before tomorrow.
I like the sugary, fruity type. Nerds, Mike n Ike, licorice. Put chocolate candy bars in front of me and they will survive around me for weeks.
I don’t know about all the different apps to screenshot and capture but my son sends me screen shots of things all of the time (related to a grade posting or some email he received) and he taught me how to take a screen shot from my iphone. No app needed just pressing down on two buttons. It’s literally a two second process and for teenagers who do this all of the time, they can do it in a second flat.
