Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

On top of the fact that you CAN save SnapChat pics, there is also the fact that kids on the receiving end can show them to their parents and other big-mouth friends. I’ve seen plenty of cringe-worthy ones.

I’m not sure about the videos, but the pics can definitely be saved from Snapchat.

I personally love Snapchat–my nieces and nephews send snaps frequently and it totally helps with the connection thing. They like it better than sending pics via text because they can add the geotags, stickers and filters. D collects the geotags–our spring break trip is full of geotags from DC, Pittsburgh, etc.

** Good luck to everyone facing November 1 deadlines! **

Hopefully the Halloween sugar rush will help.

Weekend plans. Not spending a huge time here. I haven’t read another 70 posts. Yesterday was crazy day, I left the house early, worked most of the day, went to DS’s competition in the evening. Missed the neighborhood halloween party.

My older daughter mentioned ‘Are we going to the pumpkin patch’ and I snapped at her. Realized she hasn’t been home for the last 4 Halloweens and didn’t realize I kind-of dropped that tradition 2 years ago. In the end I picked up 2 lovely pumpkins cheep & the Saturday AM farmers market I frequent. So we will probably find time to carve these today. DS’s robotics club meets today, he has a Halloween party with friends he doesn’t know if he’ll make. He was busy all weekend until late last night with band stuff. Has homework, and promised to get his OSU app in by Monday night. (Tuesday he is also completely busy till at least 10pm.) Not sure if either the Halloween party nor the OSU app are going to make it. My understanding is he has the application complete except for the 6 short answer questions it asks instead of an essay.

@MotherOfDragons When I was in H.S. A group of us went halloween caroling. It’s was fun & silly. Someone had halloween songs to popular tunes, and we put on costumes and would walk around ring doorbells & sing silly Halloween songs. We got some candy as well that wasn’t the point.

We get gaggles of college kids trick-or-treating. Plus some H.S. groups and it’s honestly hard to tell them apart. But not that many little kids anymore. Our street has few kids and those that are here tend to walk a few streets over to those that are busy. (Only about a 1/3 of the house are typically opening making it not very fun.) I don’t mind the college kids long as they are a) in costume b) later in the evening. (Basically that they let the little kids have a crack at if first.)

@STEM2017 The sugar rush is going to help me recover. S17 has moved on from apps for the next week and now focusing only on next weeks subj tests. We now have 4 apps submitted and next official deadline is not until 12/1. That means 11/12

Happy submitting to all for the 11/1 deadline!

Cross-posting from the other 2017 thread:

FYI - I don’t know much about raiseme.com but my D had looked into it a while ago and a couple of schools on her list participate in the micro-scholarships it offers.

We just logged in today and one of her schools has a NOV 1st deadline.

DS trying to get a maker portfolio submission together – what a chaotic process around here - but at least his project finally works so he can video something - fingers crossed! Send us good vibes - it has been a long journey with MANY obstacles to get to this point. Then there’s just one more important EA app to submit by Nov. 1. UMD app finally showing as complete so that’s a relief. I hear all of you about some colleges dropping off and trying to prioritize the remaining list. I feel that is important for us to do - there are a few schools DS really likes that we’ll try to get apps done for by Dec 1 and then any remaining ones by Dec break so can have an actual break . Some EA decisions are out in mid-Dec but some are early Jan it seems. What a process this is. Still have not had time to go visit 2 schools within 3 hrs drive - cancelled 3 times already – hopefully soon.

Halloween - huge number of little kids in our neighborhood. Our dog might be either a banana or Batdog. I vote for Batdog! DS18 wants Rick Ross – or TrumpDog.

Two apps submitted this weekend and two more “staged” waiting for ACT results before submitting. UChicago moved to RD after my urging to postpone the excessive writing pending a decision from the ED school mid-Dec.

Almost a necessity as she was nominated for the Presidential Scholars program from our state and had another 4 prompts/400 words to crank out. For any future college candidates out there, I would encourage them to select a favorite work of art and pick a challenge they’ve had to overcome and be prepared to write about it in one way or another throughout the college app season–D17 has written some variation on these two themes more times than I can count!

D17’s school does Trunk or Treat for the middle school kids. Jrs/Srs can pay a small fee to enter their car with a group of up to 4 kids and come up with a theme. This year, her group is doing breakfast cereal (calling themselves the Breakfast Club) and she is going as Tony the Tiger. First time in years I’ve helped with a costume–I made the “tiger striped” tulle skirt. Feeling proud… :-bd

MIT application plus 2 supplements are submitted! One application down, about 10 to go.

@BlueAFMom – Congratulations to your D re Presidential Scholars nomination! I didn’t realize those went out so early – when did she find out, and is this for the General one or the Arts one?

SCEA app submitted on Friday and the portal says everything is there. D had requested the transcript a couple of weeks ago so everything was sent early. It’ll be college essay break time for a couple of weeks as it’s crunch time for school work. D is also packing today as she’ll be flying to Puerto Rico on Wednesday to present her paper at a conference. She’s got benchmark projects galore and a Calc midterm on election day. Fortunately she out of school that day so she has extra time to study.

@Gator88NE careful with the fonts or you’ll force @dfbdfb to unleash the hounds!

Halloween is crazy where I live in the middle of the city. One four block stretch of old town homes (Delancy Street) with several being historical sites like the Pearl Buck home, etc Is just crazy trick-or-treat central. Another small block spends a couple of days turning the block into another fun area. And someone with an old mansion spends 1000s of dollars to professionally decorate his house for his annual Halloween party and on Halloween nights open the first floor to look around.

I used to spend so much time and effort with the kids working on costumes and more kinda like MOD but both my kids are party-poopers now. D23 stopped dressing up last year, Says it’s lame. Got 3 tubs of Halloween decorations in the basement - didn’t even bother to get them out this year :frowning:

@Gator88NE, it would drive me mad? Only with jealousy wanting to know how you do it! (I’m a serif snob. Being able to force my CC posts to have serifs? Priceless.)

Oh look, it’s Baskerville/font.

[font=“Garamond”]Personally, I’m partial to Garamond.

Hmmmm…@MotherOfDragons Palatino? Lets combine it with my personal theory on why someone has something extra added to her picture…

There once was a mother of all dragons,
Who’s really enjoyed many tall flagons,
Preferred white, but enjoyed red,
and after one to many, had to stay abed,
She ended up raiding all of the wine wagons.
;)) ;)) :)>-

:-? I wonder if I can talk my son into answering all of his supplemental written questions with limericks (rated G, of course!)… :-?

@DMV301 this is for the General one and it was a nomination from her school to the state school board (I said that incorrectly in my previous post) so a long way from being anywhere close to a finalist! We are in Mississippi and the deadline for the state “application” is 17 Nov.

Hey so unfair, let us know. show your source code!

Done, done, done…hopefully.
9 apps submitted, last of the music supplements submitted this afternoon on a couple of them. Now for moving on back to life otherwise, while we wait for 45 days or so.
Hoping for an Indians win tonight, parades and Halloween, and no more college apps …can it get any better?(we can at least dream, right?)

In honor of Hallows-eve-eve JOTD:

Q: Why did the ghost go into the bar?
A: For some boos.

Q: What is a Mummies’ favorite type of dance music?
A: Wrap!!!

Q: Know why skeletons are so calm?
A: Because nothing gets under their skin.

Q: Why can’t the boy ghost have babies?
A: Because he has a Hallo-weenie.
:ar!
