@traveler98 my DS is applying for McDermott too and he feels his weakest area is leadership too!
S has to get his wisdom teeth out this summer. We are waiting until one musical is done and before next one starts
Then when school starts it’s time to apply to some schools and get ready for auditions.
I’ll be sending good mojo for all of the McDermott apps. It’s a great program.
Re: wisdom teeth - yep, S is getting his removed in about two weeks, too.
My daughter is going for a oral surgery consult next week - the same guy who did my younger daughter’s oral surgery (not for wisdom teeth). Her teeth are growing so slowly she could be in college by the time they cause trouble, but her dentist said to get them out before then and I agree. We are hoping to get them out at Thanksgiving. Like I said, no rush but get them done.
Folks who either had them done or are scheduled … did you do full or partial sedation? My youngest, who had teeth growing in the roof of her mouth, was partially sedated and did fine. She didn’t want to do the fasting beforehand. The surgeon said he rarely puts people fully under for wisdom teeth, and even then it is at the patient’s request. We will find out what he says about older daughter’s, but she wants partial if it’s appropriate.
Back in ye olden days, I was put fully under.
My oldest got hers out last week and I think she was put fully under. She was much more out of it than when she got sedated for an endoscopy, though the oral surgeon said it would be similar.
It really was so much faster and easier than I expected. Almost no pain and no swelling. She took one Vicodin after the surgery as instructed and one at bedtime just in case. She woke up pain free the next day. It was only in the evening of that second day that she felt uncomfortable at all and took another painkiller. And that was it.
Because it was so uneventful, I’m a little bit afraid she won’t remember to rinse with the syringe after eating.
S had full sedation with his wisdom teeth removal (Thanksgiving break 2015). He was anxious about the procedure so the oral surgeon thought he’d do better if fully sedated. The fasting wasn’t an issue bc he had a very early morning appointment and isn’t usually too hungry in the morning. I had to have a tooth removed and a titanium implant base placed in my jaw several years ago, and despite high anxiety about dental and medical procedures I did fine with just oral Xanax prescribed for the procedure (I don’t take anti-anxiety medicine at all normally) and no needle sedation. Also back in ye olden times, I was put fully under for my wisdom teeth removal. My poor H, who was in the Navy when he had his done and had no choice because he had no money to go to a private doctor, had no sedation at all and just had to gut it out with the local anesthetic and full awareness. I think his story (“yeah, the surgeon had his knee on my chest to get the right angle to pull out the teeth!”) was partly responsible for S wanting to be fully sedated. :))
Yes, I had them out while awake and remember getting jabbed about 12 times and don’t recommend that.
My D had general anesthesia and S will too I believe.
I had just sat down and opened a magazine it seemed, that the oral surgeon came back and said she was done. D was very diligent about using the ice packs and then later rinsing with the salt water. The hardest was taking the first dose of medicine and I got some children’s motrin because it dissolved.
And it’s hard when they can’t eat much, only sherbet, mashed potatoes and other easy to eat soft foods. But the worst was over after the first few days. No straws for two weeks I think though. So everything has to be eaten with a spoon.
My youngest had laughing gas first, and then the topical numbing - she had this done in 6th grade, so still more or less a child. She was loopy as heck, and really doesn’t remember anything. I wasn’t allowed to go back … and it did seem like it took forever, since it was kind of complicated (won’t get into the gory details). The oral surgeon even called me at home that night to make sure she was doing okay, which is why I really like the guy.
We will find out more next week, but I am assuming some kind of gas that makes you not care, before the other stuff. I am leaving this up to her completely, so it will be interesting to see if she stays with partial sedation if she’s allowed a choice.
Happy 4th of July!
Happy Fourth!
By next year’s Fourth, we’ll all be making plans for getting them to their colleges for the start of school.
S is getting wisdom teeth removed next week. The plan is to fully sedate him, and apparently the surgeon has some type of drug he will inject into each of the sockets after the teeth are removed that will keep the sockets numb for 2 to 3 days, to eliminate the need for a heavy duty painkiller.
As someone who was awake having wisdom teeth removed, I beg you all to encourage your kids to be asleep for the procedure (or at least loopy as hell). It was traumatic.
Yes, Happy Fourth of July!
A rare occurence that we are all home and nobody had to get up early for work. S is working later this afternoon.
We are eating steak from the grill and corn on the cob.
Happy 4th to all!! We are staying local - well most of us. DH is off to France for a work meeting, DS17 sleeping till whenever - got from from FBLA National trip iat 7am via the redeye! DS18 at work all day. Fireworks & concert tonight.
Application question: Is there a substantive difference between the Common App and a college’s own, if the college takes both?
Just wondering if anyone just does the college’s own application when offered a choice, and if that seems to make a difference in terms of deadlines or anything at all.
Two of the colleges take solely the Common Application. A couple only accept their own and others offer a choice between Common and college.
@bearcatfan, S has that decision to make for Tulsa. The GC advises using the college’s own app for schools that value demonstrated interest, and Tulsa fits into that category. It’s not a big deal for S because he’s only applying to three schools and the other two aren’t Common App, so he’ll most likely just do Tulsa’s own.
S is visiting College of Charleston tomorrow. Road trip with dad. We’ll see what their impressions are.
@traveler98 Thanks, I didn’t think of that!
We are visiting two colleges back to back in the same city this week - one does Common App, and one offers a choice but does consider demonstrated interest. We are already visiting, but it doesn’t hurt to ask if they have a preference. I don’t care, really … what’s one more login and password to keep track of? 8-}
I found the College of Charleston absolutely charming! (Not an official visit, just wandered over there one time when I was in the city.)
I’ll keep you posted on reactions.
