Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@Kayak24

  1. 17 schools - too many ? (some were free/fee waived and we only had to send 1 ACT report to each school)
  2. All done
  3. Essays...6-ish 1 Common App (Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.), 1 Coalition, (Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it. This was reworked for Apply Texas B) 1 Supplemental re: Diversity (reworked and used on 5 separate applications, including Apply Texas A) 1 Supplemental re: Tell us about yourself (reworked and used on 3 applications) 1 Supplemental re: Why this School (reworked and used on multiple applications) 1 Apply Texas C re: If you had a ticket anywhere... this was her best essay, in my opinion, it was the last one she tackled. She liked the topic and it showed in her writing, there was a relaxed openness and seemed she seemed able to really make it reflect her personality and say a lot about herself. Too bad the only place is was useable was for TAMU and likely won't get read because the C essay is for scholarship consideration and stats wise she will not qualify for any scholarships. There were a few short answer questions (I want to say 6 - 9, but I honestly don't recall) on various applications but they were all easily answered and/or were cut downs of the above essays. We learned a lot about essays from DD2016 and the value of being able to recycle. I like to think DD2018 worked smart with her essays and was able to make them work in multiple ways....we shall see if that strategy worked.

^:)^ @labegg I am really hoping D will be able to do the repurpose thing with her essays. Too soon to tell as she hasn’t finished even 1 yet! But don’t look now she’s working on “why school x?” right now for one of her favorite schools… should be easy, right? right?! X_X

Applying to: 8-14 (still weighing things)
Done: ZERO
Essays: at least 1–I think about 8? Maybe a lot more, not sure. I feel like some are more “short answer” than essay. Plus there are those scholarship essays that I’m hoping he gets to write.

Trying to force him to finish Common App essay at least.

  1. How many schools is your son/daughter applying to? ~7-10. Still coming up with the final list
  2. How many applications are already done? 0
  3. How many supplemental essays were involved? 10-15ish, depending

Here’s DS’s progress and plan:

Submitted National Merit App yesterday. Test scores submitted and GC’s lor requested

Apply Texas complete, the one optional essay completed (rewrite of the NM essay) waiting after the Explore UTD meeting on Sunday before submitting. SAT scores submitted, GC and teacher lor’s requested, transcripts will be requested on Monday.

McDermott scholarship application in progress, lor’s requested, transcripts will be requested on Monday, can’t figure out a way to send scores! maybe you they are just self reported? (will ask about this at Sunday’s event) optional video no where near started! Completed application Due Nov 2nd for early consideration.

Next Steps:

Apply to honors program (not sure if he has to wait on acceptance to the college before submitting application - another question for the Sunday event!)

January apply to DH’s children of employee scholarship
February apply to local power company’s scholarship
March apply to our credit union’s scholarship
April apply to our high school’s scholarship

  1. How many schools is your son/daughter applying to? ~10. One might get dropped.
  2. How many applications are already done? 0. The first is due 11/1, she’s planning to get it in by 10/20
  3. How many supplemental essays were involved? So many. I’m not sure how to count since some are quite short so aren’t technically essays. But they are very numerous.

@SnowflakeDogMom I think 2002 oddys had transmission issues, but ours has been fine. And I hope it stays that way!!!

Our hatch problem started with the heat this summer. I want to see how much it would cost to fix it. I’d like to let it go but in my anxious moments I envision it coming down hard on someone’s head, I’ve even thought of duct taping it closed to be in the safe side. Then I’d really look like a crazy lady.

Going food shopping had become a pain with the broken hatch. I had a great system of putting laundry baskets in the trunk and putting the groceries right in there --no bags a la Aldi. Refrigerator and freezer items in one; pantry items in the other. Then I would call home and tell the kids to meet me outside and carry the baskets in. Now that broken hatch spoils everything!

  1. How many schools is your son/daughter applying to? 15 but spoke w/ an alum of yet another school and…
  2. How many applications are already done? 8
  3. How many supplemental essays were involved? 20-24 or so. then several short answers.

FAFSA instructions

@ShrimpBurrito It’s a dry heat! :)) Awe, my hubs & I are ASU alumni. It is a dry heat, but it is blazing hot. Lol!! Hope you all enjoyed your visit.

It’s just starting, @trish02  We are spending time with friends over the weekend, then the full tour experience on Monday.

I’ll answer the roll call…
1 application - 1 done - 1 extra essay

My S18 is a one & done kiddo. He received his offer and accepted last week and I’m so very, very thankful it turned out how he wanted. Now, I’m cheering all of you & your kiddos on!! :D/

@apraxiamom - Happy 18th Bday to your son!! <:-P He might need to get a new driver’s license. Here in Texas, when kids turn 18, they have to do paperwork for a new license (no longer says under 18 on it & goes from vertical to horizontal).

Progress today, DD worked hard to edit her essay down to 550 words. Emailing it to her DE English teacher to review. Yay!

Also talked thru her college list. She wanted to add a few, due to her improved SAT.

She also showed me a copy of her transcript that the GC gave her. I can see the bulk of it in Naviance, but this one listed rank: #2 out of 200 for weighted GPA!

How many schools? 12 (9 early and 3 regular)
How many done? 1 done (CSMines Golden App - no essays required), but none submitted yet.
How many supplemental essays? 32, but a few he was able to reuse. Not as many as we thought he was going to be able to. And to be fair, about 10 of those are very short answer (50 word max).

He’s so ready to be done. He is almost done with the last essays and has the goal of finishing tomorrow.

of schools applying to: 11, and there are 4 on his wait-and-see-how-I-feel-in-December list

Apps done: 1, but will have 5 more done by the end of the weekend

of supplemental essays / short answers: 21 (including essays / short answers for merit scholarships, with more to come - there are a couple of merit scholarships that we won't find out the requirements for till he submits the app for admissions - thankfully there is some overlap in essay topics) (and if he applies to all four on the wait-and-see list, that will add 6 more)

@MACmiracle one of our hatch arm cylinders went bad several years ago. Hubby bought new ones and changed em out. Similar to garage door springs.
Hope your hatch issue is just the arm cylinders

DD is applying to 4-5 schools.
2 have been submitted.
Looks like 3-5 supplemental essays.

D has found 10 schools she likes, but it’s uncertain how many she will apply to. If she gets into any of her early schools, then she will apply to fewer RDs and might even be done.
0 submitted.
Looks like more than 20 essays/short answers.

Hooooly smokes! Been offline for 2 days (have visiting relatives in town)…I’ve missed a bunch!

We are “vintage” car owners here too. Gosh just another confirmation that I’ve found MY people here

Two 2006’s with 125k and 160k mi. plus our “new” 2012 with 65k. Not a fan of car payments so we’re hanging on. Had major repairs with one of the '06’s this year so that was painful but the mechanic thinks it’s good for another 100k so fingers crossed. D is driving the '12 which is more of a kid car than our two parent-mobiles and will pass it along to D21 when she’s off to school in the fall. He gets his license around the same time so it works out nicely.

Regarding apps @Kayak24:

1 - 14 schools (including 5 UC's)

2 - 0 complete but app apps filled out. Just stalled on the essays!!'nnn

3 - 18 essays (including extras for short answers & honors college)

We are losing any progress for about a week while family is in town. It’s all D18 and S21 can do to stay on top of homework and extracurriculars right now. There is absolutely zero spare time for college apps or FAFSA :((
