Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Congrats @1518mom !! <:-P <:-P <:-P

Congrats to all of you with great admissions so far! The Class of 2018 may be the most impressive so far!

Haven’t posted in a while so here is our update. D18 submitted a number of OOS apps early on and after a lull just submitted her UC and CSU apps - we are in California. So now we wait to determine our fate with March decisions. I swear the waiting is the hardest part but I’m sure paying tuition bills will surpass that next year.

The good news is that out of the 4 CA schools she has applied to, her CSU safety is her favorite so fingers crossed. For OOS we did some merit chasing at Bama, USCar, FSU. FSU is dirt cheap with merit and decent rankings - wonder about this one as I don’t see much CC love for it. McGill still in play if that works out.

As December approaches, I worry about which schools we are missing - fear of missing out! We have a good mix and sure it will all work out. Good luck to all! :>

Yes, FOMO! :)) It’s running rampant at our house!

I’m just counting down the days until 11/30, when the UC app is due, which is just the right time for my D to submit. What’s the point of doing anything early, when you can create pressure, tension, urgency and fear of missing the deadline? Seriously, where’s the drama with submitting week or weeks in advance? X_X

Just for advanced notice, I’m sure I’ll post that the system is down for maintenance or we’re getting the evil “circle of death” on Thursday. I’ll remind her about the system crashing on the last day or two before the deadline and she’ll yell “I know.” :-@

Well, D just submitted her app that was due 12/1. #:-S

Don’t hate me, @sushiritto.

Why complete apps for RD and scholarships now (or during thanksgiving break), when you can wait for your winter sport, club sport, EC and AP obligations to really cause you to stress and freak out and lose sleep and age your parents?! “I’m super happy to proofread that 600 word essay at midnight” said no one ever!

FOMO! Love it! We have it at our house too.

My DD applied to:

University of Maryland
UMBC
UVA
WVU
Pitt
UDel
Penn State
George Mason

Are we missing anything? My DD is interested in engineering. She has:

3.97 uw, 4.7 w GPA
1490 SAT (760 M 730 r/w)
Lots of ECs like Robotics, Varsity Tennis (captain), NHS, Special Olympics volunteer, etc
7 AP, one DE

Already heard from WVU, $20,500 scholarship $.

She has considered applying to more reaches like JHU and Carnegie Mellon. I think she is intimidated, exhausted from essays, etc. Also she hasn’t taken the SAT subject tests yet. She is signed up for this Saturday SAT tests but her heart just isn’t in it.

She/we want her to stay within a few hours from home in Central Maryland.

Please chime in if we’re missing any good options!!!

LOL @MPT3D!! This is soooooo going to be me with S21. Thankfully (I guess???) he probably won’t have the grades to apply to the schools D18 can. In-state here we come!!

@astro77 that’s a really solid list…does she have any interest in polytechnic schools like Worcester or Stevens…we loved both those campuses and programs and they tend to be very generous with merit aid. Just another thought.

@AmyBeth68 , thanks. We are trying to stay within 1-2 hours from home. So many good options farther away, but we are lucky we have some good ones around here.

I know from your posts that you are very knowledgeable about a lot of these schools. Any ideas about how my DD will do for admissions, merit, and Honors programs at them?

Thanks!

@Astro77 I would think Udel for sure will give her merit, but from what I’ve been seeing their top merit outside of Distinguished Scholars (which they won’t send invites for a bit) is about $15,000. I would think she stands a good shot of the $12-15K which is about as much as they give outside of DiScho. Pitt is tricky…they are all over the map this year but I’d think she has a shot at the $10-15K but honestly who knows it could be more…they seem to take into account the short answer questions a LOT and also GPA/Class Rank so I’d think she has a good shot at decent merit. I’m not as familiar with the others in terms of merit but she definitely stands a great shot of acceptance to all! GOOD LUCK!!! Does she he have a top choice?

Today I scoured stores, braving weird looks, asking for a handful of packing peanuts. S18 told me at 4 p.m. (when I got home) that he needed them for AP Physics lab. Finally got them at a UPS Store. The man didn’t even blink an eye. “It’s always Physics,” he said.

@ShrimpBurrito I have heard good things about U Denver but know nothing about it.

@Astro77 maybe Temple?

FOMO. Glad to hear we aren’t the only ones. Anyone else in this group feeling that clock ticking and wondering if there any schools you are overlooking as the deadline to apply approaches? :-??

@mommdc thanks for the suggestion!

@AmyBeth68, UMD is her #1 choice. She has been there for some cool events related to STEM activities. Probably UDel and WVU after that.

She is in top 1% of class for rank.

@Kayak24 I hear the clock ticking loud and clear, but my D keeps trying to smother it with a pillow. I’m right there with @sushiritto. I keep looking at her list of RD schools and guessing about which ones are going to come off the list.

Thanks @mommdc. D gets lots of mail from UDenver (and we have family nearby), but they don’t have her major. She submitted her UVictoria app tonight, and she seems content with that, at least for now.

Funny thing…D was researching UVic at school today, and her good friend looked over her shoulder and started asking questions. Turns out UVic is the perfect school for this friend–it’s exactly what she’s been looking for, she meets the admission requirements, and it’s well within her budget. Friend has been on the phone today with her parents and with UVic, and all systems are Go. She’s all smiles. She’s here at our house now, and I’m just so happy for her. The college search has been really stressful for this sweet girl.

Taking a last minute trip to Vandy next week just to make sure we weren’t missing she might like before the 1/1 application deadline.

@burghdad, I think Vandy likes interest so that’s a good move if your D is interested. Nashville is fun! If you have a chance, go to the Listening Room. It’s a great place to hear new acts. https://www.listeningroomcafe.com/

Edited to add: I suggest making a reservation.

@Astro77 great list. Obviously CMU and Hopkins are much different than the fairly large state universities on her list.

Another couple of smaller schools with good engineering programs that might not be too far geographically are Bucknell, Lehigh and my alma mater Lafayette.
