Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@1822mom Sounds exactly like my D and I. She’s applied to nine schools, and would be happy to attend any of the six instate schools on her list if accepted, all of which would be affordable. Still, I continue to scour the internet for other options, where more merit money might be available…and she has no interest. She’s done, and now we wait.

We had our bout with FOMO this weekend as we parents wanted to make sure S was applying to enough “local” options (i.e. western us). Our conclusion was we were okay… but the ice had been broken, so we scoured all our old lists and came up with a couple more options on the other side of the country… oh well. S18 didn’t even look over when I invitingly asked if he wanted to apply to one more… :expressionless:

Congrats to all who received acceptances and other achievements! Parents who have been through this before all speak of the transition from “applying and hoping” to “receiving and choosing” and how fun the second stage is.

FOMO :slight_smile: I envy you folks with kids interested in widely available majors. S18 had about 8 schools with the requisite major and facilities We visited them all and he was only interested in applying to 3.

He’s left free full tuition on the table. It sucks for us but you can’t hammer a square peg into a round hole.

@glido Awesome news!

@glido congratulations to your daughter and of course her parents who obviously did something right to raise such an impressive daughter.

Stupid question here but not being up to date in the twitter sphere…what does FOMO mean…

@burghdad , FOMO = Fear Of Missing Out

@Kayak24 Thanks. I just want to say that I am new to this forum but I find it comforting and informative to interact with all of you who are going through all same the trials and tribulations. This is especially so for me who is going through all of this for the first time.

@glido WOW!!! Congrats on both counts…fantastic news!!!

Love to see all the great news coming out about these kids! And I can relate to the stress of waiting on them to get their essays and apps completed. My daughter has been working on her essays for Chancellor’s Scholarship at Pitt and the weight of it all is definitely apparent. On another note have been feeling a bit dejected…the initial high of the scholarship to Pitt has been replaced with that feeling that it’s not quite enough looking at finances. We’re still waiting on a few acceptances and UDel merit package (not expecting much there either). I guess it just feels a little disheartening that all her hard work and diligence hasn’t resulted in more financial assistance and being in the donut hole for financial aid is a tough pill to swallow. If there was a scholarship given to a kid for how much they love a college she’d surely have received it for Pitt lol! Enough of my whining for today ;).

Speaking of FOMO…

@RoonilWazlib99 and @Booajo
D is filling out the Western Wash application right now. Been reading about it–what a gem of a school. Thanks again for the suggestion.

@Veronica02 Well, there’s no chance my D will be going to UC Merced, so the designation for us is rather meaningless. I gave the letter its due respect by tossing it after opening it. Though in hindsight, that was probably a mistake.

D’s school doesn’t rank, but her school and the other schools/districts in our area may be overrepresented in that “Top 9%” of CA figure. I don’t have any idea D’s school rank in her class of 600, but it wouldn’t surprise me if D is not even in the Top 9% at her own school. :slight_smile:

I spoke with forked tongue yesterday, I actually got 4 essays to review last night. And they were even given to me before midnight. :-j That UC app could actually be ready for submission before 11/30. :-??

BTW, D’s college counselor said that the UC’s cannot read 100,000 essays, so essays don’t get much weight. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I told my D that the UC’s have special Bots armed with artifical intelligence and cutting edge algorithms and they “worm” through the 100,000 apps searching for the best essays. I think she bought it. :))

@Astro77 Wow, with those stats, surprised your DD isn’t looking at CMU or Swarthmore.

@odannyboySF thanks.

That’s what I’m concerned about, not enough reaches. UVA is a reach out of State though.

And she loves UMD, so that would be great, especially if she gets into the Honors College.

Time to make final decisions, I guess!

Congratulations @glido and belated congratulations to @1518mom!! I love hearing all of this good news!

Welcome, @burghdad and Congratulations to all who have received good news in various forms lately!

Also, I have said this before but if you are lurking here, please know you are welcome to chime in and join us at any time. If lurking is your preference, please carry on. :slight_smile: Just wanted everyone to know we are a very open-to-new-people group (and this group has been extremely helpful to most of us, hence our visits here). :wink:

S18 has finished all his apps, but I do have FOMO. He has a lot of safeties on his list, and has gotten into 2 of them already (UNCW and USC). He’s applied to 7 schools with only one real reach. He seems happy with it though, so I should be too. He’s done a couple of scholarship applications but he needs to get started on the independent scholarship apps we’ve identified. Does the process ever end?! (D20 right behind him)

Congrats to all the acceptances and scholarship offers.

While I did not attend FSU, plenty of family members have. They all have loved it. It’s particularly good for non-STEM majors (though I’m pretty sure the STEM majors are good) and have some super top notch programs in music, film and other fine arts areas. Frankly, I think the FSU campus is prettier than UF (but don’t tell my Gator relatives).

S’18 got good news today. He will be first chair for All-County band this year. It makes for a nice birthday gift (Yup -18).

S18 just has done 14/16 and 2 more to go then he can sit back to wait for the notification.

We are now on page 666! >:)

I got into Western Carolina University on Friday! 1st school of 5 I’ve heard from.

Congratulations @tsfanclassof2018 ! That first one is sweet, isn’t it?
