My son had his first birthday away from me this summer, and he hasn’t started college yet. It was fine.
@saillakeerie - my answer was tongue in cheek. Yes; there will be lots of exciting firsts next year
As expected, S18 was deferred from his top choice. I am honestly just relieved that he wasn’t outright rejected. I’d like for him to have at least one acceptance before he gets rejected from anywhere. Next decision due tomorrow and I would be shocked if he did not get in since it is a safety for him. Now he promises he will really get to those supplemental essays for RD apps this weekend…
@2018/2022mom Congratulations! Tribe! Great school. Beautiful town.
D’s schools are torturing me via Instagram. I follow them all (she doesn’t). The two releasing this week have shared: photos of students stuffing envelopes for admitted students, photos of deans signing admit letters, and last night a repost of someone opening their admission package!!
I was like, are they in the mail? Or is that from ED 2 weeks ago?! :-w
@1822mom I am looking at D schools on twitter to see when they are releasing.
@amominaz thanks for the chuckle with your facetious humor! Love #glasshalfempty
@Momma2018 I think you hit the nail on the head! Please no rejections until there’s an admittance in hand!
@2018/2022mom Contgratulations on William & Mary!
So, I’m feeling very stressed this morning. None of the kids at my D’s school have gotten into their ED choice so far. None. What I’m really stressed about is that none of them were prepared for this. Some of them didn’t even pick a realistic list of schools that they would apply to if they didn’t get in. Almost none of them have written their essays for the schools they would apply to if rejected from ED school. Most only applied to 1 school early. I’ve been telling my D that her friends are setting themselves up for a train wreck, and I’ve been the crazy mom for months. I’m so sorry that they are realizing that I’m not crazy after all. At least my D applied to 3 schools early and knows the other schools she is going to apply to. I’m so sad for all these kids who had such unrealistic expectations and are in such a tough spot with scrambling to figure out what schools are actually a match for them and they should apply to. Time is short for the app date.
Time is short if you want any merit too.
@mommdc I totally agree! Some schools had a Dec 1 deadline, others Dec 15 (2 days!!!) and others Jan 1. The mad scramble begins.
That’s rough, @melvin123 it must be hard to watch their train wreck unfold. Hopefully they will broaden their horizons and cast a wide net for RD- maybe they can even look into some of the schools that are “under enrolled” according to the NASCAC report that comes out in May… perhaps some of those could be safe choices in an RD round? There are a surprising number of good schools on that list.
Does anyone else use USPS Informed Delivery to see where their mail is coming from before the mail actually comes for the day? I’ve found it helpful to know early in the day what S might find in the mailbox when he gets home from school.
@lr4550 you’re right, there were a surprising number of good schools on that NASCAC report. Wonder what that report will look like this year? I think there is still time for these kids. It’s just that they’ve got to scramble now, and probably apply to schools that they haven’t visited which might be OK if they get some good recommendations, but let’s hope that the schools don’t reject them because they haven’t visited or shown them any love before. It’s do-able, but the stress level for them…
Wow you guys provide lots of information I would never know about. Thanks.
@gclsports I never heard of Informed delivery
@lr4550 The NASCAC list one I never heard of and a great idea to check out.
@melvin123 I totally agree, there is definitely time for sure for them (the sky is not falling in). They have lacked a strategy thus far but there is time for them to right the course. Problem is (as you know) they can become so demoralized that it can derail them from putting their best step forwarded when it’s needed most. Life lessons… ugh…
@melvin123 - I know that for S and some of his friends, they had schools on list that offered only ED or RD so if it was not #1, they had to wait to apply RD. Plus, there are a few that do not let you apply EA if you apply ED anywhere else bc you would be obligated to go to other school (BC being one). So we are in that position with only 2 early apps and despite my encouragement (ok - nagging), he still has essays to write. It’s a bummer to have to wait but I do feel like we were prepared with a good list of RD and have visited every one! (And a few that did not make the list).
Hopefully, your D’s friends still have time. I know our GC has told some kids to add to their list if he thinks they are unrealistic.
@2018/2022mom - Congrats!
@gclsports Informed Delivery, there’s something I didn’t know either. However, aren’t nearly all school decisions via email and/or school portal? I’m not sure I’d care to know what the weekly sale is at Traders Joe’s early in the day. :))
Last night, D knocked a couple reaches off her list of remaining RD apps. Her plan is 7 more RD apps, which she will have to complete when winter vacation arrives on 12/22. All reaches, from low to high. She has a few safeties, but I wish there was another safety/match that she would be happy to attend. The only ones I can think of are CA Jesuits schools like LMU, Pepperdine or Santa Clara, but she prefers a school with D1 football. She’s a sports fanatic like her father. And Santa Clara suffers from the same problem as Stanford, too close to home.
Princeton issued a press release that they are offering admission to 799 applicants out of 5402 or an acceptance rate of 14.8%. Despite admitting an extra 29 over last year the percentage accepted is lower than last years 15.4%.
Find out at 3PM today.
@sushiritto Pepperdine isn’t Catholic. It’s a Christian school that is more conservative than Catholic Jesuit schools if that makes a difference to your D.
@Momma2018 you are so right that some schools don’t let you apply REA/ED and anywhere else. That made me feel a lot better because maybe some of these kids are exaggerating about how unprepared they are, but for some of them I suspect not. I’m sure they don’t have other apps ready to go, and it is hard to pick yourself up and do them but there is time. I’m sure a lot of them need to readjust their list and hopefully it’s just to add a safety they’d actually be happy attending and adding 1 or 2 targets. But I think some of them have to start from scratch and that’s hard to do in the time left.
