Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

The big knock I have heard on Santa Clara is that they are very stingy with merit money. Especially for a “not top tier” school.

@melvin123 I know you are right, but you are freaking me out while wait on S’s ED. If it goes badly we are going to be like those unprepared kids you know - scrambling to write all his essays and re-evaluate his list of colleges. Not exaggerating. It happens, and somehow he will get through.

My friend just said 7000 ED apps for UPenn. Insane.

DD deferred from Princeton. Not unexpected. Better than rejection of course. Has 4 AP classes this year so maybe midterm grades may help her.

15% admit for ED? Wow. That is so low. Like you said - deferral better than rejection. Are there any stats on how many people end up being accepted from deferral?

@stemmmm I’m so sorry. Really. I didn’t mean to freak you out. I should be more careful about sharing my own anxiety for these kids.

I don’t think writing the essays for schools that you’ve already selected is going to be so bad. You just have to get your head back in the game.

I think the problem is if you have no idea what other schools would be a good fit. I’ve seen lots of threads here where people ask advice and get some really terrific feedback. Bottom line is some kids might have to put in applications to schools that they’ve never visited and might have to rely on someone else’s view for them, but if you do this to several schools and get in, you should have a decent choice.

Some people work really well under pressure and thrive on the excitement. Me, not so much.

Sorry, @burghdad. Those stats for admission are brutal.

@amoninaz I think it is very low like 2-3%. Some have referred to it as the nice way of being rejecting. School however claims you all go back into the pool with at RD kids. However, there will now be about 26,000 or so kids competing for about 1200 spots.

The school my daughter is applying ED to is admit or reject. Kind of harsh but I guess it will be nice to just know and move on.

@burghdad I’m sorry for the deferral. I hope your D can see it for the accomplishment that it really is.

@melvin123 thanks I think she can and I told how proud she should be to still be inconsideration for such a great school

@burghdad IMO a deferral from Princeton is a tremendous accomplishment in it of itself all things considered. There’s a classic line from the movie Dumb and Dumber that fits here I think.

You’re D could respond to Princeton, “So, you’re telling me there’s a chance.” Your D still has a chance! =D>

:-h
You’ll never know what your missing.

@burghdad S’18 was also deferred from Princeton today. I do not know what percentage were deferred v. rejected or what the odds of a deferred applicant being accepted during RD is though I know it’s a much longer shot against a much larger applicant pool.

That said, S’18 seems to have taken it in stride, basically saying “well, they didn’t just outright reject me.”

@burghdad we have a friend whose daughter was deferred at Princeton ED and then put on the waitlist after RD. Got off the waitlist in June and she’s a freshman this year. You never know!

So sorry about the deferrals @burghdad and @dadotwoboys I’m glad that they seem to be taking it well. I agree that they should take tremendous pride in getting this far. =D> >:D<

@burghdad our neighbor is a freshman there and their Christmas break is before fist semester finals! I like the idea of being done with exams, coming home and relaxing before starting fresh. Seems like it would put a damper on the vacation…

@burghdad and @dadotwoboys sorry about the deferrals. Glad your kiddo’s are taking it in stride! Here to more responses! (Ok I swear there use to be an emoji with a beer stein, so picture a stein here

My D was deferred last year from Princeton and got accepted during RD so it happens. Good luck. My D sent an update in February/March to the AO with any updated information and letting them know it was her top choice.

The Shipping/Delivery Notification is very useful for USCalifornia and WashU scholarship notifications as they send packages via priority mail. Also for some schools that send swag after acceptances to entice the student.

@Dolemite, it was nice of you to stop here with that news. Your avi makes me smile every time I see it.
