Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@MPT3D They do get a 10 day ‘Reading Period’ when they return before finals start. Then I get my D home another week at the end of January before Spring Term starts :smiley:

Where do I sign up for this shipping/delivery notification? :smiley: Is this UPS or USPS or FedEx or all of the above?

@labegg May I ask when she sent in her application?

@Kayak24 Here is the link. I think UPS has something similar. Don’t know about FedEx.

DD deferred at Cornell. (Dyson). Trying to get her to NOT go ED2 at a faraway school before she hears from great EA schools (Villanova, Northeastern, Tulane). She’s in “hurt” mode, Mom is in “practical” mode.

Yikes! More than 300 posts to catch up on.

Congrats and commiserations on the acceptances, merit awards, deferrals and rejections!

S finished his school play, took Monday off to rest and is winding down the last of his schoolwork before break. TimTam (the kitten) is thriving. She’ll be at a really fun age during S’s break. :slight_smile: She still wants a bottle in the middle of the night most nights, but that will end in another week or so, too. She’s totally adorable, but S and I are looking forward to a regular sleep schedule again. He gets up when she does, changes her bedding if necessary, refills her hot water bottle, holds her until the bottle is warm, etc. I do the actual feeding.

The other kitten is thriving, too. The mother of the girl who has her passed overnight from a long battle with cancer. This is what I was alluding to when I hinted that the kitten might be saving the girl just as much as the girl was saving the kitten, and it’s also why I didn’t push to keep the kittens together. Sometimes a fuzzy little packet of all-consuming, unconditional love comes at just the right time to make a different burden bearable. The girl is the younger sister of S’s best friend, so we’re heartbroken for them. It sort of puts things in perspective, you know?

The girl was in the show with S, and the drama kids recorded it so her mom could watch in bits and pieces. The son, S’s best friend, elected to not to apply anywhere last year in order to be home for his mom’s final months. He’s a drama kid, too, but not applying as a senior means he missed all of the big audition cycles and he’s in no state to start them now. He’s been taking classes at the local CC and may take a semester off. He heard about UNM from S, and their theatre department doesn’t admit by audition, so he’s decided to transfer to UNM to complete a theatre major when he’s ready. He’ll get a waiver of OOS tuition, he and S will share an apartment and the whole thing will cost less than a Cal State for him.

That’s the plan at least. We’ll see how things play out over the next six months.

@kaitlin99 her application to where?

As most know here, my D was rejected from Stanford. I know some may prefer rejection to deferral, but count me as someone who wants to “STAY IN THE GAME.” Admissions is a game of survivor. Kids are hopping all around, so a deferral still leaves open the possibility of admission.

D and I would love to have had a deferral because there’s still “time left on the clock.” As an example, someone who comes off the deferral list at Princeton will withdraw their admission from Cornell. Obviously historical yield rates play an important role, but @sonnyday your daughter is still there at the precipice of Cornell admission.

Enough of the sports cliches. :-j

@DiotimaDM my heart absolutely breaks for your kids’ friends. It really does put things into perspective; and a reminder to savor all the moments bitter and sweet. I am hopeful the young man transferring to UNM has a wonderful experience, he deserves the world. On a happier note glad both kittens are thriving!

ND just released their REA decisions at 18:42 (military time).

I’m thrilled to report that D was admitted to Notre Dame! We actually did a happy dance, and there were tears for both of us. We are very grateful here tonight.
