Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

What wonderful news, @suzy100! Congratulations!! Don’t you have another child there already?

@DiotimaDM , Wow - so tragic. :frowning: I’m so sorry to hear this and I completely agree that the kitten was a tiny blessing that may do at least a small part to lift spirits in an otherwise devastating time. My thoughts and prayers are with that family and all families enduring hardships this holiday season. Certainly does put things in perspective.

Thanks for all the well wishes, everyone! She does have a sibling there, @ShrimpBurrito, which is why I was so so nervous about this one. I imagine that may have given her app a little boost as well.

@DiotimaDM, I’m so sorry for that family. I can’t imagine what they are going through - thoughts and prayers going out here too. We realize tonight how lucky we really are, and try hard not to take anything for granted.

@suzy100 Grats to your D on ND! If I had my life to live over again, ND is one of the schools I would have favored. :slight_smile:

@suzy100 wooHoo!!! Big congratulations!

@DiotimaDM echoing what others have said ‘it certainly puts everything in perspective’. That poor family. And right in the midst of the holidays (not that there is ever a better time).

@suzy100 I’m so excited for your family!!! Congratulations!!!

@suzy100 - congrats on the acceptance!

D18 deferred from ND and she seems fine with it. This is not in her top 5 and she didn’t show them any love so this isn’t unexpected. Her stats and ECs are right in there, but her supplementals lacked heart and I think it came across.

More decisions coming this month but again not her top schools. Her favorites don’t announce until March so we have a loooooong wait.

@suzy100 - CONGRATULATIONS to you and your D!! <:-P

Did anyone’s 2021 kid take the PSAT/NMSQT? Mine did but we’re not sure what a decent score is. She is only taking Algebra now so Math not so great but it’s hard to tell how she did. I’m surprised they offered it to Freshmen, but I guess it’s good practice…

@astro77,our school all students take it as freshmen but I haven’t seen the scores yet. Lol, haven’t looked either. This drama takes up all my energy…

@suzy100, congrats! Trying to convince my son to throw in a hail Mary there. Love the look of ND. Hoping D21 will consider but she wants a ‘warmer climate’!

@DiotimaDM, had to come back and search for your post. Prayers are with your family friends and yours with such close connection.

Congrats @suzy100!! <:-P <:-P <:-P

Sorry to hear about deferrals @sonnyday and @Veronica02 better days are ahead for both your kids!

@DiotimaDM you simply slay me with that story. :(( Perspective indeed. Something I have probably been needing lately as I feel like my world is falling apart around me, but… it isn’t. [-X This too shall pass and we are well and safe and on our path. The rest is noise.

@labegg Texas A&M

@suzy100 Congrats to your D and you!

@Katilin99. According to MyHowdy she submitted her application on August 30. She received her application acknowledgement on September 1 and her acceotance on November 21.

Not to be a Debbie downer but having gone through this in previous years, we have an issue with Princeton’s SCEA and deferring most applicants. It felt very disingenuous when Princeton deferred the vast majority of applicants from their SCEA round, which they historically have.

IF a student has to choose to apply early to Princeton and only Princeton (I understand they may apply to state Us) to get an early decision, then Princeton needs to hold up their end of that same agreement…and render a decision. They skim the very cream off the top and reject very few. That leaves a majority in limbo, holding on to hope. Arguably, unrealistic hope. Few of the defers become admits. Granted, not none, but we would have chosen to have it over with rather than to hold breath for another 4 1/2 months. If applying early and committing to not apply elsewhere early does not yield an early decision, then be straightforward and let applicants choose to apply where there actually will be an early decision.

IMHO, being deferred is less of a positive message than folks are reading in to it.

Just my opinion; don’t beat me up over it.

@grandscheme - I respectfully disagree. I’ve got enough life experience to have seen things do a 180 after an initial disappointment. Not to say D is sittting around here with crossed fingers and toes for the next three months - no - D is moving on. But I’d much rather have a “maybe” than a “no”…you just never know what will happen.

I’m getting a chuckle over here. I’m bored so I was playing around and went on CC’s college search function. Gee, it only came up with 2 results for my D to apply to…Harvard and U Chicago. I think CC needs to go back to the drawing board on this.

@Veronica02 We can agree to disagree about whether it is worth being deferred those additional months…but whether you want a decision or are willing to wait, if a student uses their singular (Ivy) early card, there should be an early decision. Its not fair to have it both ways…or one way, depending on your perspective.
