@ShrimpBurrito - I am surprised more kids from my D’s high school aren’t looking at Southwestern. Seems like a school that would resonate with the liberal arts feel of her small high school. D wants something a bit bigger than that but sounds wonderful!
@bearcatfan we just got my dd an AmX under our account today. We feel it’s the safest, and their customer service is really second to none. Any questionable charges are removed while they investigate, etc. There was no charge for it.
My older daughter got a Discover Student Card prior to heading off to college, they give her cash back and bonuses for good grades. They even have late payment forgiveness. We are very happy and she’s managed to improve her credit rating by making online payments. Initial amount of credit was small, I believe $500 but not certain. It slowly increased with each year of good credit behavior.
That’s pretty neat, @AmyBeth68. I am going to check into that.
My son has a debit card linked to checking, backed up by savings account. I can transfer funds to his as necessary. Don’t think I’ll add a credit card to mix yet, but if we did, good advice above!
Both my girls have debit cards linked to their bank accounts. I’m the custodian on the accounts. This year D16 got the student discover card and that has worked well so far. I wanted her to start building her own credit so this was a good way to start.
Southwestern looks like a wonderful place. I’m going to tell my D about it.
S18 was just accepted to UVM! Relieved to have something. Now we have long wait until March/April for the rest.
Woot @Momma2018! Let’s keep the good news coming!
Hey @momma2018 - my daughter was accepted at UVM, too!
Congrats @MomOutWest!
Accepted at Yale! My DD worked so hard for this.
I was checking Naviance this afternoon and I discovered that many schools, including the CSU’s and UC’s, have posted their 2018 application count from D’s HS. Since the application deadline for CSU’s and UC’s was 11/30, the numbers could be fairly accurate.
For example, for 2018, the amount of apps to Cal and UCLA are up about 1-3 apps over 2017, so stable when compared to 2017. Whereas, the amount of apps to CPSLO for 2018 is way down. And the amount of apps submitted to the rest of the UC’s appears way down also from D’s school, in some cases, significantly like CPSLO. Naviance also has loaded 2018 app counts for other schools around the country, but I assume that they’re representative of only SCEA/REA/ED/EA apps in most cases.
USC(Trojans) apps are way down too, but I’m sure the number is only representative of those trying to get merit consideration and submitted by 12/1. But I wonder if that wouldn’t be almost everyone at her school.
The final item that I found interesting is that one (1) person has been accepted/enrolled so far to Cal. How did that happen? A single recruited athlete?
FYI Someone has reported getting a decision via Trinity’s portal.
Big congratulations @zomaya99 !
Big news here, too! D was accepted to Trinity with the 25,000/year scholarship, and an invite to compete for the full tuition Tower Scholarship.
She is thrilled. Trip to San Antonio coming up! :D/
Interesting @sushiritto - I think all the extra USC apps are coming from my daughter’s school! I think 10 applicants in a class of only 75.
Yay @ShrimpBurrito! How exciting!
@sushiritto Yep. I can see ours too. It is crazy the # of kids that have applied to the same schools.
@ShrimpBurrito That is great news about Trinity!!! Congratulations!!!
Same here @cardinal2020mom - In a pretty small school I am surprised that there are applications to some of the schools my D is applying to that she has no idea who the other people applying there are.
