Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@mstomper We are in the same boat with Fordham it is really not going to be a fiscally sound decision for us if DD is accepted. However, I am betting she will be denied.

@mstomper and @labegg We are waiting on Forham too!

We are hoping to hear from TCU and SMU today.

Add another one for Fordham plus D’s ED school which I haven’t wanted to name on the boards for superstition reasons I guess. I’ll tell you later though, after we learn the verdict. Now if I could just get this knot out of my stomach. :-<

Anyone know what time Fordham is likely to release? And I think their FA awards aren’t communicated until Feb. Does that include merit?

Ithaca is still the first realistic choice, although getting enough FA isn’t a sure thing there either. When I go to weather.com I see the Ithaca temp because I checked it when my wife and son visited in October. This morning it was 7 degrees. If he complains about the cold here in the DC area this winter, our reply will be “are you sure you want to spend the next 4 winters in Ithaca?” Whatever happens he still has his safety, which he would be fine going to. I think he’s made his peace with Fordham not being affordable even if he’s accepted.

Best of luck for everyone waiting today!!

@Kayak24 - I was the SAME way; didn’t want to name any school. Hopefully you get good news like we did

Congrats to all those that received good results yesterday and I’m sorry for those who didn’t get the results they were hoping for. It is a cruel game, this college business.

Waiting for Fordham here too. Same boat - not too worried about acceptance, all hinges on the merit award. D is NMSF & they offer full tuition, but not sure it is guaranteed. Hope to find out today.

So exciting with all of the decisions coming out this week! Good luck to those of you waiting on today’s announcements!

Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear ED today. My stomach was in knots yesterday waiting - so I’m feeling you right now.

So y’all, what do you feel the etiquette is on withdrawing applications and/or declining acceptances?

@labegg - thanks for asking that. Was wondering as well.

@labegg - Last year with S17, we withdrew applications we knew he was never going to accept (not enough $$$ was a big reason). Come May, he still had 7 schools that he was considering. We confirmed enrollment at U of Minnesota and tried to decline all others. Only 2 or 3 of the other schools had a way to decline enrollment.

For S18, we have a list of 15 (not my idea) and we will wait until all acceptances are in and all $$$ distributed before beginning the process of declining packages although there are a few that we could do now (Central Florida gave a lot less $$ than they have in previous years and South Florida gave him a really good package so if he goes to Florida, it will be South Florida).

We did not decline for DD2016’s schools, we just waited for May 1st to come and go. But I have wondered about what the official stance is on how to decline. Do we send an email? what is we have no contact with anyone in particular at a school, do we just send it to the admissions office? Procedurally it is a bit gray.

@labegg I’ll have my kid email her admissions reps (and carbon copy the admissions office) to explain that she is:

  1. withdrawing her application (in this case due to an ED admit) for any apps already submitted. I’ll encourage her to identify the school she is attending as I think they keep a record of schools students choose over theirs (it can be helpful but it certainly isn’t necessary). I’ll also expect her to thank them for their time and acknowledge how much she liked the school if it really was another top choice. Something along those lines, short but courteous.

  2. for a school she has to decline due to a previous acceptance- probably a very similar email to both the rep and the admissions office- in her case explaining ED decision and recognizing the school she will attend. Same deal, thank for time and consideration, honored to be accepted, best of luck, etc.

We were told by college counselor that S can send an email to decline other schools. S18 was accepted ED last night, and will send emails tonight or tomorrow morning. I wanted to wait 24 hours or so just to be safe, since there were some instances in the past of colleges accidentally sending acceptances out to kids who hadn’t been accepted - extremely unlikely to be the case, but it’s happened so I want to be prudent.

I will definitely have D rescind her applications to other schools, especially since many of them are pretty selective. Would hate to potentially eliminate someone else’s chances of getting in because of her application.

So with the Trinity acceptance yesterday, DP Jr. is basically waiting on only Chicago (Monday) and Princeton RD IF he actually applies there by January 1. All success so far, but I am more than prepared for sad news from Chicago. DP Jr, I think, is not prepared for sad news.

We talked a little about Trinity. We will know more next week, but at this point he is leaning on not going out for the Tower Scholars day. It’s early March, and I think he wants to be done by then. That’s a tough choice. I think Trinity is great, and a good fit. It is simply not feasible without that Tower aware, and it is both super competitive and also beyond his time line. Decisions Decisions.

With all of the acceptances and awards in the last few days, how are everyone’s odds looking?

Still Lobos all the way down over here.

@DiotimaDM
I was going to wait until Monday to update our Big Board.

100% Vanderbilt here. ED no financial aid (ouch)
