Still waiting on Rutgers (possibly tonight?), Miami OH (RD so not until Feb/March) and Merit from Delaware (no idea why hers hasn’t been sent, almost all accepted who meet the criteria have received their packages already). We also are waiting anxiousy to see if she is invited to the next round of Chancellors (interview phase). Not holding our breath on that, it seems these kids that got Chancellor nods are all extremely amazing and those short answers for the selection process were incredibly difficult.
So the short answer: Pitt is stil number 1 in her heart :). But I think she should probably review the packages and merit (assuming she gets any) from the other 3 before committing (despite a decent merit pkg from Pitt).
@AmyBeth68 Trinity U in a nutshell:
“LAC plus,” with engineering and a few graduate programs.
Because of its classification, it doesn’t show up on USNWR National Unis or LACs, so it often flies under the radar.
Second best student academic profile in TX, behind Rice.
Urban setting, 2 miles from beautiful downtown San Antonio.
Hilly campus (“Cardio Hill!”), red brick modern buildings.
Massive endowment: they spend it on gorgeous, jaw-dropping facilities, stellar teaching faculty, and luring top students with generous merit.
Vibe is buzzy, energetic, fun.
@DavidPuddy It’s interesting to see how different kids handle this college decision making progress. My D is the opposite of your S. She wants to wait until May 1 to commit, leaving as many options open as possible. She is really glad to have the Trinity option and is excited about Tower Scholars Day, even though it’s ~#4 on her list.
I was thinking about updating odds. It will be fun to see the massive changes!
@ShrimpBurrito Trinity really sounds like a winner! There is a Trinity in Hartford but I knew it was not the same one most of you were discussing. I will keep it in mind as a recommended college for friends etc.
I think Trinity is not that high on my S’s list, but he would likely go there if he got their full tuition scholarship and didn’t get any other full tuition scholarships. But I certainly cannot read his mind. I thought he was done applying, and he just sent in 2 more applications last night! Including Oklahoma, which we parents used to love, but now are not excited about their cutbacks. He was looking at some list last night of places that are free to apply to! I am unclear why it has taken him until December to engage–maybe he needed to get the Stanford monkey off his back first?
I would not withdraw or decline any applications or admissions until S18 accepts and deposits at one school. My S has been accepted at his top two choices so he now doesn’t care about any of the others…but it’s a long time until May 1.
We will attend admitted student programs for those two; one in February, the other in mid-April. What if he attends and dislikes them both? He will still have options assuming he gets admitted to some of the schools he hasn’t heard from yet.
Can we start a thread for kid’s without any acceptances? The list would be short and easier to track. And the last one to be removed with the list gets a prize. Hint: my D would really like a Jimmy Garoppolo (49ers QB) jersey. :-j
Wow, a few days away from CC and the 2018 thread has blown up! Congrats on all the acceptances and scholarships, sympathy for the deferrals and rejections.
The odds board here remains solidly UTD. Go Comets, WHOOSH! S has never expressed a single doubt or regret about being one-and-done. He’s just been happy to enjoy senior year and look forward to UTD.
I did have to inject a small dose of reality last week though. I’d been encouraging him to ask his CS teacher to help him find a coding job for the summer, and although he had been saying he was interested he kept “forgetting” to ask her. Finally I asked him why he was dragging his feet and he said he would prefer to take a coding course this summer. I told him he is welcome to take a course but that H and I would not pay for it. I also said if he doesn’t want to try for a coding job that’s ok but that he needs to get a paying job otherwise. Stocking shelves at the grocery store, working retail at the mall, whatever. He could use some proper work experience with set hours and all that. He did have a paid job as an IT tech for a tiny law firm for a while, but it was extremely casual and low hours and not what I would call “real” work experience. It is past time for him to fill that gap.
In a shocking coincidence, the very next day after I told S he’d have to pay for any summer courses, he just happened to remember to ask his CS teacher for help finding a coding job! :))
@1518mom I totally agree! A lot can happen between now and May 1, and kids can have a different reaction at admitted student days. We did all of our visits during the summer when there were no kids there, so my D could feel differently when she goes back during the school year. Obviously ED is different.
Congratulations to all these wonderful acceptances!! I am new to this thread, so exciting to hear everyone’s news!
My daughter is applying to University of Rochester, among several other schools. She is applying RD… doesn’t want to make the binding decision yet. She has received two separate emails on different dates from Rochester asking her to consider moving her regular decision application to ED. They don’t have EA.
Wants to study history, and probably double major with history and physics for the time being.
Have others been contacted regarding changing applications from regular to early decision? Thoughts?
