Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

This is so exciting!! All their hard work is paying off.

@labegg I will be interested to see how this affects A&M? Wasn’t that her #1?

Lots of good news for DS today. Accepted at TCU, SMU with Provost Scholarship ($30,000/yr), Barksdale Honors College at Ole Miss. He also found out that he was awarded the Citizen of the Month at his HS (1 senior boy/1 senior girl selected each month). That honor can be added to his local scholarship apps that he is working on now.

So DS is 9 for 9 on acceptances and now the wait til spring for scholarship $$.

Thanks, everyone, and Congratulations to @labegg and all of the others who got good news this week. A sincere hug to those who were hoping for different outcomes. I’m confident your wonderful kids will be very successful no matter where they land! @MACmiracle what fantastic news about D’s SAT score, and WOW on that math improvement!

For those who asked about Financial Aid from Hopkins, it was ample. It came in $5k lower than their pre-read and I’m likely going to appeal with 2017 tax info (they said I can do that) so I’m hoping for lower still. Interestingly, D had forgotten to check the Fordham portal and we learned tonight that she was awarded full tuition there. Very proud of her but crunching numbers now of course.

Congrats @Clementine7624 and @PrettyGrownUp! My daughter was also accepted at L&C today with $23K and $2K leadership! She really liked L&C but will withdraw since she got into her ED school last night. LOVED Lewis & Clark though.

Congratulations to everyone receiving good news tonight!

@MACmiracle that’s great news on your D’s SAT scores. I know it was a real struggle with her concussion, so that’s particularly terrific.

Hi Shayna, Best of luck to you in the coming days! Positive CC vibes coming your way! =D>

Thank you for the warm welcome! Everyone is so nice and supportive in this thread. Love it!.

Wow! What a day this thread had!! :open_mouth: :D/ I’m not even going to attempt to call out everyone who had good news this time because it’s late and I know I’ll miss someone, but I saw you all and I am so excited!
<:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P
It’s time to celebrate this group and all the successes we’ve had this year! Not just the admissions and scholarships, though those are obviously great, but the improved scores, the quick recovery from tough deferrals, the persevering through tough academics while ALSO working on college apps, the performances, the athletics, the awards, and yup, the down time, cause let’s face it, if they managed to find down time this year they’re doing something right!

Here’s to our hardworking kids! (And their devoted parents ; ) <:-P <:-P <:-P

So the news that happened in my house tonight: D got info on her Agnes Scott portal confirming her scholarship (25k/year) and inviting her to their Scholars Weekend event to compete for a full ride. I don’t think she’s actually competitive for this award, but we’re going to the event. She’s never visited campus before so this will be her opportunity to see what it’s like and meet other admitted students. She’ll also do an overnight in the dorms, giving her a chance to meet current students and check out the dorms.

Then she got an email from Willamette to check her portal and she’s in there too (with 25k/year merit)! Finally, she’s been feeling a bit under the weather so we left her at home while we went out to eat, when we returned an hour later, she causally says, “oh by the way I got an email from Redlands.” I thought nothing of this as Redlands wasn’t expected until January. “Yeah, I’m accepted.” she said, totally deadpan. “And I got a scholarship too.” :open_mouth: (30k/year) Then, “oh and Southwestern sent their scholarship info too. I put it all in the spreadsheet.” (29.5k/year) :open_mouth: :open_mouth: She gets the double face for actually using the spreadsheet I set up to track this process! =))

So yeah, it’s crazy, this week she’s heard from 4 schools, and now she has only one remaining (that she cares about), and that should come in January, or who knows maybe sooner? :-??

It’s getting real folks! Now that the money is starting to appear, the great news for D is that we’ve looked at the numbers and every school that has accepted her so far is affordable with the $$ they’ve offered, so yay! But now she has choices, and she will have to start thinking about those choices. :-?

Finally big WELCOME to all the new posters!! Love to see new faces here! :x

@kayak24, congratulations to your daughter! @labegg, you, too!!! and you three, @GertrudeMcFuzz !!
And @1822 mom - what a great feeling to know that so many affordable options that your daughter likes with be affordable with scholarships. Good for her!

@amominaz , good luck to Shayna and everyone else waiting for UChicago ED!

My son was rejected from his ED school (Columbia) yesterday. To be honest, it would have been such a huge financial hit because we are full pay (and we didn’t know when he submitted the ED application that he would get at least one full tuition scholarship) that we are almost relieved he was rejected. Also, although I think he would love many aspects of Columbia, I think he is in a real growth/development phase and that he would truly be better off having a little more time to get a better sense of what he is looking for. I’m also thrilled to be able to see all of his options, rather than have to live with never knowing what they might have been. All things considered, ED might not have been the best move, but who knows how we would feel if he had actually gotten in.

He got two acceptances this week (University of Denver and Willamette), each with about $25K merit aid. It doesn’t make them super bargains, but the scholarships are nice nevertheless. A few more RD applications remain, assuming he can keep up his steam.

It’s seriously getting real!

Yippee for good news! And, that’s right - now is the time to show us the money. ;

@golfmom2018 My daughter is NOT a high stats kid. A good GPA and extracurriculars/activities, but average test scores. @sushiritto You give that girl a big hug … good things are coming her way.

What an amazing couple of days!!!

I am also not going to single people out because I would undoubtedly miss some but huge congratulations to everyone who got good news.

I love logging in each morning and seeing new acceptances! Congrats, everyone!

I was talking to S18 last night and he told me that his classmates are all sending Snapchat and Instagram posts of their acceptances/rejections/deferrals. I remember everyone walking in eggshells at my high school when decisions came out and not talking about it until they knew where they were going. I can’t believe how much social media has changed things. (unless I just went to a weird high school?!?)

Wow, @1822mom - congrats on such an amazing week of positive news for your daughter! Good luck as she learns more and decides which one is the best fit.

Good Morning!
This has been a big week everywhere! In our house we had one acceptance mid-November, then one last week, two this week about to be three as today one will be in at 9am, and one more for sure in the next few days. I feel like it is similar to popping corn. First one lonely pop, then another and then it seems to explode. That is also how I feel about all the posts here the last week…these kids are POPPING! I know there are a few burnt kernels (and I am expecting some here) but they will all end up with some great pieces and it is fun to hear the POP, POP, POP!

Congratulations to all!! The kids are starting to smile and the parents are starting to get some sleep!

I am thrilled to announce I am semi-retired from the college application essay proofreading/editing role I have had the past two months. Last night we finished the last daunting 500 word masterpiece and she sent it off for GC review. This was one that jumped up out of nowhere when she was submitting an app to one of her top choices two weeks ago. When she clicked on her major there it was. She almost cried as she thought she was done and even started talking about changing her major ( which had been her number one criteria on our cross country college search). We have been sending that puppy back and forth on goggle doc and last night she had it complete at 590 words so I rolled up my sleeves and we got it down to 499. Without a doubt this has been the most painful part of this process for me which has happened to come at the busiest time of my work year. I am so excited!!! When I come out of retirement 2019 for D20 it will be much better because she is a much more creative writer…just a few grammar checks and maybe a little word reduction will be in order not multiple rewrites and procrastination.

Best part is we are now done before next week’s midterms and Christmas will be college app free!

As I said DD has to run everything by GC…well this week the inevitable happened. The senior guidance counselor who is the college counselor for all 100 girls (DD attends a private all girls college prep school) was admitted to the hospital on bedrest until the arrival of her triplets (due in February). DD returned to the first day of school in August and came home to report that Ms. X was very, very pregnant…everyone thought she was 9 months along but then they learned it was triplets. The school assured us that they had it under control and she would be here through the first semester (ends two weeks after Christmas) and they had an experienced college guidance counselor in the wings ready to go. DD and I looked at each other and that is when we decided all her applications would be done by Thanksgiving. We knew the week before we would not have the last three done so she met with Ms. X and had her review everything but the essays on the last two and Ms. X agreed she could email the essays when done and then upon approval submit without meeting her again. Thank goodness. The girls who were not done are now having to FaceTime Ms. X in the hospital during school hours because the guidance counselor they hired is not a college one but a day to day one. This poor woman. I sent her an email thanking her for all she did this fall and told her I am in awe of her. Doing this with one 17 yo was more than enough I cannot imagine doing this with 100 while pregnant with triplets with a little one at home! She is very good about emails in the hospital but the poor thing can not always be reached on FT (we all know what hospitals are like) so some girls are having a tough week. I predict the head of guidance will be the new go to ( she has to be copied on everything now) but what a mess and there is no reason…not like she suddenly was due with triplets last week. Pretty disappointing for a private college prep school.

I will say though it got us to get done early and this will be the same time table I use with DD20 in two years. She is in a different high school so we will see how they handle the season.

Wow Congratulations to everyone… I had been following the thread for a long time and if a miss a day or two, hundreds of awesome postings get missed. I am familiar with many of you from the individual schools and congrats to all of you as well as the new friendly posters.

As the days and weeks go by, it seems like everything is playing out with many pleasant surprises and for some a few little let downs. By the end of this process, I really believe everything is going to work out amazingly well for all us.

In an incredible twist of amazing news, our daughter was accepted to The Ohio State University and UGA on November 21st. She was awarded the competitive Morrill Scholarship as OSU which we thought waived the out of state cost of tuition. As the days have gone by, we have learned that this incredible scholarship is actually worth the full cost of tuition. She had been awarded some outstanding merit from other Universities, but nothing close to a tuition waiver. She is waiting on a few other acceptances just for kicks, but in her heart and mind, she is ready to become a Buckeye and make a difference at this fine institution.

My daughter has a good frient at Willamette and she loves it, but she says there is nothing to do in Salem. We were there for a softball tournament and I asked her what I could do with my son and she like, nope nothing. We did find a great farmers market. Friend plays softball for Willamette so she doesnt have a lot of free time so the lack of things to do is ok with her.

As for Portland, I love Portland, when they aren’t rioting. And they have been rioting a lot the last few years. I would love to take my daughter to Portland ine more time before she heads to college to hang out at Powells but you never kniw what is going to set them off these days…

@1822mom - what are the chances of so much good news in one day?!
Absolutely thrilled for your D!!! =D> =D> =D>

So much wonderful news and fantastic scholarships for so many. Congrats to all!!!

@labegg and @gclsports Congratulations! Go Rams! NYC is your campus - very cool.

S18 in early at University of Wisconsin-Madison! Direct admit to Mechanical Engineering program! We weren’t expecting to her until late January, so it was a fun surprise.

@RoonilWazlib99 I was at “Whiskey” this past summer for annual competition, what a gorgeous campus and city. And we have a family friend who’s a freshman there and loves it. Congrats!

And congrats to everyone for a wonderful week of acceptances and scholarships. What a dizzying array of awesome news. Phew! Busy week out there. #:-S

@bearcatfan I did. Thank you. Her positive news this week is that her finals next week shouldn’t be too bad. As an example, because her grade is high enough in AP Chem, she can flunk the final and still get an A. So she has that going for her. :))
