Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Wonder how many posts I need to become a “senior member”? Cranking it up today!

I will add a little more about Pitt since several here are looking…

Yes, my D16 hated hills early on, but loved Sutherland her freshman year. She didn’t love the hill, but Honors housing was a great choice for her. She did not stay in Honors housing this year, but mostly still hangs out with Honors kids. About half the girls in her 8 girl suite were frequent partiers. She was not–hill definitely helped there I think! Parties are more in South O. They split more along those lines (party/nonparty) for housing this year. All 8 girls kept their scholarships, so the GPA at Pitt is doable. I think @mommdc child changed majors–mine did too. Easy. Mine even added a second college (Business) to her Letters and Arts. That was harder, but obviously doable. She did choose Pitt for the money over Tulane. Tulane would have required her to take some student loans. Just the regular ones (5k), but she didn’t want any debt if she could avoid it. She has no regrets–I still have a little guilt but maybe that’s just parenting?

DS’14 just got home for Christmas. DD’18 insisted on driving to the airport to get him . . . it’s wonderful to see them together. These two are four years apart, so they each graduate this year.

Hey y’all I stumbled across this youtube channel called Go Beyond the Brochure. You or your kiddo might find the videos helpful when trying to make a final decision about schools. Lots of school are covered.

@Booajo Miami Oh sent email to dd, me and dh to check the portal. You will know then there is something.

My DD is missing two lower molars. She had them removed whenshe got her braces and will have implants done at some pount. I was hoping before she left for college but it is looking like not for a fewmore years yet. She was also told she dodnt have wisdom teeth. Then she went in for her second round of braces and they were just starting to form so it will e a long time before she has them removed.

@pickledginger As my avitar name suggests I live in Pittsburgh. Pitt is a great choice for the student who wants an urban campus. Additionally what was once mostly a commuter school has become much stronger academically and more of a national university in the last 10-20 years.

Oakland is always hopping with both Pitt and CMU right next to each other. Short bus/bike ride to downtown. Lots of great ethnic foods. Pittsburgh in the past 5-10 years has become quite the foodie place. Pitt is big enough and there is enough going on in the city that I can’t imagine that the sports overly dominate the Pitt scene. In fact there are complaints about the low football attendance and basketball is really struggling attendance wise this year as well.

If you or your son have any questions about the school or the city please feel free to PM me.

@PlateauMama surprisingly my D18 nor myself got the email to check portal for Miami. I mentioned for her to login bc I saw acceptances pop up on CC lol! Love thus community!

@labegg, thanks for that link. Looks interesting. Will forward to D.
@burghdad, D will be going to CMU this fall, so will remember to PM you if I have any questions. Thanks a lot.

@PlateauMama yes we did actually get the email (came overnight, saw it this morning). And yay, he is in. Love having options.

@SCAnteater so very sorry about your cat.

@DiotimaDM sending prayers to your family, these fires are so tragic and scary

Real life events and circumstances serve to put these things into perspective. Prayers for those affected by fire, flood, etc.

On a more insignificant note, barring Christmas miracles, it’s safe to say no more admissions until after New Year’s. So, hold your loved ones close, appreciate them, and show gratitude for them by thinking of others without all we have.

Thank you for your advice and encouragement during this admissions rollercoaster!!

I’ll take a first stab at the odds game. I’ll probably look back at this in May & laugh. D is not sharing much, so this is pretty much a wild guess.

UCF - 30% (we haven’t seen it yet, but this would be a full ride for D)
Fordham - 25%
ASU Barrett - 20%
Temple - 15%
Pitt - 5% (if she were to get the Chancellor’s this one would shoot to the top)
Dark Horse candidate (U Miami, Tulane) if some financial miracle were to occur - 5%

Ithaca and McDaniel are neck and neck. He’s waiting to see how the FA at Ithaca works out. It’s likely to be very, very close. Parents still think McDaniel is the better fit, but if both are affordable the choice is his to make.

@Pri930 CMU is a great school. My wife got her masters in environmental engineering from CMU.

@Booajo we are West Coast so it was not quite bedtime when we got ours. Dh (who is always n email) saw it first.

So sorry to hear about your kitty SC Anteater. :frowning: DH’s parents and thier house are fine. They were allowed back in last evening.

Daughter was just accepted to Rutgers Dance BFA ( Mason Gross). Notification is a month early, so daughter is very happy. She loved the audition and the program.

S was accepted at Miami OH last night with invitation to the Honors Program. That is one of his in state public safeties, and the safety he likes best, so we’re glad to have that decision come in. Hoping for a nice merit offer.

@2gclsports I really tried to get my D interested in Miami OH honors but she never bit. Congratulations to your son.

Hey Cal Poly SLO people, check this out! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/2042904-for-applicants-that-forgot-to-list-middle-school-math-grades.html#latest

Hopefully this is true. I know one of our kids ran into this issue but I forget which one.
