Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@RoonilWazlib99 ^^ Was that you?

FA package for 2nd choice came today. It got the price of tuition, room, and board to about 20K, or less than the in state options he didn’t apply to. The admissions decisions came a day apart, so maybe the FA decisions will as well. I would be surprised if 1st choice came within less than 10K of today’s offer.

D got an acceptance to a very nice honors program–real invite so she doesn’t have to deal with another app. She isn’t convinced about the school but I think it would provide excellent grad school preparation.

Today was oldest D’s last day of a six month unpaid internship. With that done, she can officially graduate, sit for her certification exam, and job hunt. A new era begins.

@mstomper That sounds great!

So far we have one instate safety around $15,000 and one smaller Catholic college at $20,000. So far everything else is $25-30,000.

I just checked automatic scholarship levels with D’s new SAT score at the instate safety D may not to apply to…the one H said she wasn’t interested in when they called. Costs would go down to $8-10,000 including housing. They have direct entry nursing and accept many students into their graduate OT program. Very tempting.

This thread is hard to keep up with! I know there’s a huge amount of congratulations for all the acceptances that have been posted recently!

It’s been relatively quiet on the college front for D. Biggest news was she was voted Winterball Queen at the school semi formal last weekend! She was surprised, we were so happy for her!

Thankful that finals is over. D had a head cold and with the dance and the last first meet of her sport, it was a brutal week. Things will slow down during the break for her, but not by much. Hopefully a few sleep in days though!

S has advanced from the local lodge to the district level in the Elks MVS scholarship. If he passes district, then it’s on to state and all we’re hoping for is that he advances from state. He won’t make the top 20, which is where the big money is, but we’re not out for big money with this one. He’s just looking to be eligible for a later scholarship to med school, which is contingent on his performance in this one.

First day of break: 2 sets of supplement drafts planned, 2 done!
One music application submitted.

She’s on track to have everything drafted before Christmas morning, and then edit and submit before the 1st. Go go!

UCF is my sons top choice also and he made the visit. If SB #4 goes through and gets signed then the Benaquisto scholarship (Full Ride) would also be in play for your daughter at FSU/UF assuming she is NMF. This would also make the same amount of $ ($33000 scholarship) available for Miami too.(almost Full)

Well, no last minute before the holidays “congrats you are accepted” emails or envelops in the mail here today. It looks like we are in for the long haul on the remainder of schools. =P~

Trying to coax daughter to finish the last 2 rd apps due 1/1.

She assures me they will get done.

Yes, that was me (well, my son) with the middle school math issue at Cal Poly. I’m not holding out hope that this is true, but it would be nice! Cal Poly was a safety school for him until the error, but an in-his-top-four safety, so I will cross my fingers for good news April 1!

If true, his MCA goes up to 4969, with a cap at 5000, so he would be in great shape. But again, not counting on it being true.

So it was Wednesday afternoon when DS got the call to schedule an interview for the Singletary scholarship at UK. They asked whether he wanted to do it on January 16th,17th or 18th. We spoke then that afternoon and decided on the 18th, and he had the task of calling back and scheduling the time.

Well I guess DS is on “Christmas break time”. He waited until mid afternoon on Friday to call back, and by then everyone was gone for day and recording says not back until January 2nd. Email got the same result.

Didn’t let it show with the kid, kept a don’t worry it will be fine face, but I was a little annoyed with him for not following up with more urgency. I am generally an optimistic and not a worrier and I think it will most likely not matter and he will still get his interview spot. But he has very little on his plate for these couple of weeks so there is really no good excuse.

Thoughts? No big deal and don’t worry about it?

If they called everyone Wednesday afternoon and were closed by Friday afternoon, I would bet less than half the kids called back in time. My kid was in school through Thursday and wouldn’t have been able to call during business hours until Friday morning at the earliest.

So I say, no big deal. And it sounds like the 16 and 17th aren’t impossible for you, if it turns out the 18th is full.

I agree @LOUKYDAD ! They just have this homestretch left, but getting them to the finish line on their own is a tug of war. I think they’re too tired physically and emotionally even to think about anything more than getting a day of rest, video games and actual fun. I know my DD asks for 5 minutes, without thoughts of colleges running around her brain. though they lurk banished to the corners of her mind ready to escape during family gatherings. “So, what are your plans for the future?”…

Wow @LOUKYDAD I applaud your restraint in not letting your feelings show! =D> My D would have known immediately my thoughts and, yeah I agree the ball was dropped here. But I also agree with @daffodilpetunia that it seems like it will all be fine. My D has a reputation for dropping balls like that so it’s a sore spot with me so I think I would for sure react but definitely you were right to keep your cool… a skill I have yet to develop alas! :-<

It will all be fine. Try to let it go and enjoy your holiday!

What @1822mom said, verbatim except substitute my S for her D. @LOUKYDAD, hopefully you have some flexibility and can make the interview work without shuffling too much around.

OK, this was a weird letter to get …

DD got a letter from the admissions office at a school that put her in pre-nursing, not nursing. She had decided she didn’t like the school anyway, but that really took it off the table.

Anyway … they increased her merit scholarship. By a lot. Yet she didn’t make it into her major.

The financial aid award isn’t in yet, and I suspect admissions and financial aid don’t talk to each other because they said “this award will become part of your total financial aid package when you apply for financial aid.” I submitted the FAFSA in October (they got it, right?)

I guess I figured if they want her enough to increase her merit award that they’d want her enough for her major, but I guess not.

That is weird. Had she been previously admitted to nursing? Did they indicate this is a change? It seems like it could be an error.

@bearcatfan, it sounds like an error. Follow up after the break.

@daffodilpetunia It was pretty clear in the admission letter that she was pre-nursing even though she met or exceeded their stats. That does happen sometimes in competitive programs, but it rankled a bit lol.

Yes, the increase in merit was a change, which they spelled out in a “congratulations” kind of way. But it was a little underhanded - she still has three different grants but they took some money away from one grant while bumping her up to a higher level of another grant. The end result is more merit, but done in a way where it’s not as much as it first seemed. I compared it to the original letter she got.

It’s moot either way, but interesting.
