Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Congrats to all on the acceptances! Such an exciting and nerve wracking time. This college business is not for the faint of heart!

Here’s our list and update. We are focusing on merit so not real reaches admission wise.

U of Alabama (accepted w/merit)
Ole Miss (accepted w/merit)
Texas Tech (accepted w/merit)
Texas A&M (accepted to University. Still waiting on acceptance to major)
Baylor (applied)
U of Alabama Huntsville (accepted as of last week. Automatic merit expected but have not received formal letter yet)
Lamar (accepted w/merit)

A week or so ago I was trying to decide if we should take a 2nd look at Ole Miss as their COA is the lowest thanks to their generous scholarships. We have scheduled that for next month along with an audition for the marching band. The band director has been very nice and at least appears genuinely interested in DS. He indicated there might be more scholarship money based on the audition…

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! Application #7 submitted and just 2 more to go, due Jan 15. Trying to convince S18 that an “optional” supplemental essay is not really optional. Sigh. He may be able to re-use another but the prompts are so specific. Oh well, an essay that is slightly off-topic may be better than no essay at all.

Thanks for all of the input, everyone. I will show your responses to S during our next talk.

We’ve looked at his projected freshman schedule, and there’s only one class that would change if he wanted to switch from pre-med to BSN. His current plan is to continue on the pre-med, BS in EMS path and do some serious shadowing over the summer and once he gets to UNM.

ACCEPTED AT MCGILL.

This is huge!! This is one of her top three. It’s way under our budget, even with no merit (no word on that yet).

McGill was the first college D visited, summer before 10th grade. She told me, “Mom, we don’t need to visit any more colleges. This is my dream school, and it’s where I’m going to go.” She may have been right.
:slight_smile:

@ShrimpBurrito Great news and congratulations to you daughter…

@ShrimpBurrito

Congrats on McGill - great school!

@jpc763 Thanks for the offer. A former neighbor went to Mt. St. and loves it, and her parents just moved there this summer. She has nothing but good things to say about it. It’s certainly not as easy or cheapt to get to from the Bay Area as the Colorado Schools. I’ve driven though the Mines campus but know nothing about CSU/Ft. Collins (a couple kids from our swim team went here in the last year or two).

Everything’s kind of in limbo for a while, though S is still working on his scholarship app for Colorado St.

WONDERFUl news @ShrimpBurrito!!! One of my very dear friends’ daughter attends, third year student currently and another of my daughter’s friends is there as a fourth year. Both have had an incredible experience. Many congratulations to your daughter!!!

Yay @ShrimpBurrito! I know this has been an acceptance that seemed to take it’s time coming. Great news!

@ShrimpBurrito great news!

That’s fantastic @ShrimpBurrito !

So happy for you @ShrimpBurrito! What schools is your D still waiting to hear from?

Great news @ShrimpBurrito! Your D must be so excited.

Congrats to your daughter @ShrimpBurrito!

@ShrimpBurrito congratulations to your daughter! I could feel your excitement in sharing the news!

Thanks, all. >:D<

It’s hard to gauge how D is taking it, as she’s texting me from school. I’m thrilled enough for the both of us, I think. :smiley:

She is waiting to hear from four schools yet, but the two that really matter are UBC-Vancouver and USC (Cal). She’s been really high on McGill the last several days, but the party isn’t close to being over yet.

Congrats @ShrimpBurrito !! <:-P <:-P <:-P

@“SC Anteater” my parents are both MT State alums and it was the first (ill-fated) college tour I ever took D on. Unfortunately my bad mom moment turned her off the school, but it is such a nice place with a great college town. My dad actually grew up there, and returned to live there after he retired. Beware the winters though, he just recently decided he needed to snowbird out as the winters became too much for him.

And, back in the day, Colorado State was my favorite school that I applied to. Got in but didn’t end up there, which is fine, but I still remember how much I liked it!

Yay for your D @ShrimpBurrito! That’s wonderful news!

Yay!

@ShrimpBurrito oh man, congrats! What wonderful news, to the dream school, that is awesome!
