Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting.

We are DONE - a second generation Bearcat. :x

After months and months of this, it feels weird yet oddly peaceful. We played the “this or that” game for so long that it feels strange to have decided, and have it be the number one school for her. I don’t think she stopped smiling yesterday, lol.

Still waiting on financial aid. We will get some some, but I don’t anticipate any merit aid from the notoriously stingy UC. It’s within budget anyway, but every little bit helps. We are also waiting on some bigger local scholarships.

@gclsports Richmond changed the scholars program this year. Check the website. No semis tgis year and finalists havent been announced yet.

Congratulations @bearcatfan!

If you haven’t added to these acceptance threds here on CC, I would encourage y’all to consider it. Oft times it is a place for people to get a spark on where to start the college search!

Well after the disappointing merit scholarship news from USCal earlier in the week we had the opportunity to take the UCLA tour yesterday. Coincidental but perfect timing as my D loves the campus and the programs they offer. She’d been on the campus before but on her own. The tour added some color and our guide was awesome. He did talk briefly about the USC/UCLA rivalry and it definitely has a little more meaning for us now. Hoping for some good Regents scholarship news this coming week.

Congratulations @bearcatfan! Peaceful IS a great word to describe the feeling of being done. S18 says congratulations too.

Ditto on peaceful. With everything else that’s gone on in our lives, I am super grateful that S didn’t have college stress on top of everything else.

We think we’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel (knock wood!). S has been talking about a possible new GF, so I have my fingers crossed for that. He’s been leery of getting into a relationship again since he know’s he’s headed OOS in the fall, but, well, he likes this particular girl. She’s also a senior, so they’re navigating the tricky waters of I-really-like-you-but-we’re-both-leaving-come-August.

I’ve told him that there’s no harm in seeing what happens. They can A) keep it light and fun, or B) let it go where it wants to go and see what happens. If it gets serious and it’s meant to be, it will survive distance.

There’s a winter formal coming up. They’ve been playing will-they-or-won’t-they for awhile now, so I hope they go.

I am curious to how things will turn out for D in relation to the interviews she has done. She had 3 interviews at super reaches/ ivies this week and 6 all together.
Of her interviews, based of course on her reporting but I trust her completely to have it accurately, she has had three ‘meh’, one ‘good’, and two ‘outstanding’. The two outstanding were two of the ivies this week. Followed yesterday by an ivy that went ‘meh’. She said nothing went wrong, they just didn’t click and nothing special at all about it.

One of the ‘meh’ was at LAC that the interviewer asked her to come to his home. I really struggled with how to handle this. There is a whole separate chain about it. In the end she suggested a public coffee shop which is where they did it. Her description of him later was that he was a little odd. In the back of my head I am not expecting an acceptance at this place.

The ivy yesterday I felt like she really nailed the supplemental essays so to have the interview not go great is a bummer.
Conversely if she got into either of the ones that the interviews went outstanding she would be over the moon.

Just speculating and entertaining myself since there is still two months to wait.

Congratulations @bearcatfan!!!

@swtaffy904 - I would NOT be okay with coming to someone’s house for the interview. Actually, if I were an administrator of the school I would have in the rules that this would absolutely not be acceptable.

@bearcatfan Congratulations!! So happy for you!

Anyone expecting any big news this week? I feel like we are in limbo now until March.

Feb 15 Clemson honors college next for us

First semester ended, and S did very well.
Other than his core English, math, science and social studies classes, he has a few music classes a day, which keeps him happy.

Semiformal dance is coming up and he is going with his girlfriend.

Play practice for spring drama has started and he placed 2nd in district chorus for his section.

I need to have him get his Trumenba shot soon, so he can get his second one in August.

Feb 1 is the notification date for UTD McDermott scholarship finalists, so that’s big news for us. I’ve bought the ingredients for S’s favorite dinner to make that day, either to celebrate for good news or console for bad news.

After that we’ve got NMF notification possibly as early as late next week, depending on the mail delivery and how soon the GC gets around to notifying the students. S should be out of the woods for a rejection letter, as they were mailed January 16 and he hasn’t received one, but it will still be big news when he actually gets the NMF confirmation.

Congrats to @bearcatfan!

Ooooh! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for our McDermott candidates. I know there are at least two, but I think there might be one or two more. Sound off so I can root for you.

In mid to early Feb., we find out if S is a Nat’l Merit Finalist. In late Feb., we find out if he advanced to Nationals in the Elks MVS.

NMF is kind of a done deal at this point; not much worry there. Elks is a toss up.

@bearcatfan Congrats! Knowing the decision is made lifts a huge load.

February 3rd - U of L GEMS interview/Med school tour
February 5th - Letter to HS for NMF
February 12th - Letter to home for NMF
February 16th - honors decision email from U of K
February 23rd/24th - U of L Brown Fellows interviews
By end of February - decision from UK on Singletary scholarship

Or…DS on 2/16 may just say enough already and choose UK.

Either way it is going to be an exciting month!

S18 should hear about his scholarship applications between March and May.

March will be the nail bitting month for us!
