Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@bearcatfan – Huge congrats to your DD on U. of Cinn Nursing - that’s fabulous. congrats to others whose kids also got into UMD - we just made plans to go to an accepted student day at the end of March - it is a real contender though a few desirable reach schools are outstanding. Hugs to those who did not get good news – as expected, DS did not get the famous “white box” from USC!

Did ANYONE get the white box from USC?

DD got the USC white box. Put the bounce back into her!

She was due some good news. Last week’s traumatic thirty eight minute missile attack followed by GT denial was rock bottom around our household.

Glad to add in some good news for a change.

Congrats @sekere62! Yeah, that whole missile thing was a COMPLETE debacle.

Yay for your D @sekere62!

Sorry to hear about some tough denials this week, and congrats to those celebrating good news! S18 was part of the action this week, with few definitive results. He was admitted academically to FSU with OOS tuition waiver, but needs to gain admission via audition to the music school or he will not want to attend. No white box from USC but we received an email advising him that he would not receive any scholarship notification until after his music audition, so appears to be still in play. Then UNC deferred him the day before his audition there, but the audition went well so hoping to get a thumbs up from UNC with a music scholarship.

@amominaz My S got the box. We didn’t even know it was a thing.

Congrats to all who got admitted to UMD, U Cinn, FSU and uSC. Good news finally

Yes, hooray for some good news and white boxes!

We’re in the no luck in the big merit hunt this week also. No Villanova Presidential, and no Richmond Scholars. I wasn’t surprised about Villanova, the topics of the 8 essays seemed to show what students they are looking for (not my son), and he also hadn’t been invited to Honors Program or invited to apply to another of their scholarship programs, but I was surprised about Richmond. Thought he had a good shot at making semifinalist. Sad to likely be taking Richmond off the list, although I think there is still some chance of a smaller scholarship coming later with RD acceptance.

But later in the day, another surprise: admitted to UNC-Chapel Hill OOS. Didn’t see that coming after the rest of this week. Only applied with hope of Morehead-Cain scholarship which he wasn’t referred for (non-nominating school). Now we’ll have to decide if we want to/can pay full OOS price…

I don’t really understand the USC white box thing. If you received one, it means you’re in, and maybe/maybe not getting some merit scholarship $$ - have the opportunity to interview/apply for scholarships? But if you’re NMF and in, but not receiving any additional merit money other than auto 1/2 tuition, you won’t be finding out till Mach?

@appalachymom, congrats on UNC. They do meet full need, so maybe there will be some help?

@amominaz, if you got the white box, you are in. Some who got the white box also got scholarship news/invitation to interview for scholarship. If you are NMF, you have to be admitted, and if you are admitted then you get 1/2 tuition, and you’re right, you won’t find out until March. Clear as mud, eh?

Stupid question - USC, is this the So. Calif USC home of the Trojans or something else? I tried to google the white boxes since I have no clue what y’all are referring too but didn’t find anything.

@SnowflakeDogMom - Yes; USC Trojans in So Cal.

@suzy100 - Holy cow; could they make it any more convoluted? I am glad we did ED and D18 got in. USC was her second choice and I would be freaking out with all this limbo!!!

@amominaz Yep, my D seems to have had enough of the “will they or won’t they?” with USC and UBC. McGill has shown her the love, they’ve been easy to communicate with, and were very flexible when there was a mixup on our end. It matters.

Congrats to your DD @Astro77 . I was hoping your family also got good news from UMCP! The engineering school is so selective, it’s fantastic to hear she is a direct admit. Hopefully the honors college designation will yield some merit $$ for her, too!

@lifegarding thanks and congrats to your family too! We are very excited. It really is a great school. Is it #1 choice for your student as well?

Congrats also to @pickledginger, @klbmom18, @CA1543 on the UMCP admit, and to the recent FSU, UNC and other admissions… Such a busy day for decisions! UMCP is DDs top choice, I think, in part because her other two admits were safety schools. She hasn’t decided for sure, though, so I suggested she wait at least until she’s gone to the admitted student day before deciding. That approach worked well for DS16, where the school made a pretty big deal for students who accepted on acceptance day so it was even more special.

I’m sure a lot of S18’s friends were waiting the hear about UMCP. He had no interest in applying there for some reason. It’s strange that both our sons were extremely unmotivated students even though all their friends were/are very studious.

Add us to the families disappointed in the hunt for big merit. No Villanova Presidential (although invited to apply for the smaller St. Augustine Scholarship, which meant yet another essay), no Richmond Scholars, and no South Carolina Top Scholars. I was especially hopeful for Richmond, as it checks a lot of boxes for S18, and thought geographic diversity might help a bit there. I guess we’ll just have to see what kind of need based aid he gets, but I’m not holding my breath and figure this probably means Villanova and Richmond are probably NFWs for us. USC is still a viable option, as he has already been told he’ll pay no more than in state tuition and is in the Honors College.
