@labegg Being offered a spot on a waitlist is closer to being accepted than it is to being denied, in my experience. It is worthy of residual hope…
S18 got the NMF letter yesterday. Yippee, finally official. Now to wait another month for college decisions.
Sorry to hear the news about the scholarship, @grandscheme. How tough after all of that work to apply! I just noticed your photo… So adorable! Looks just like our Siamese lynx point.
I’m not sure how many days until DD graduates… Because our school still hasn’t set a firm date
@burghdad For what its worth, UDEL has a lot of school spirit, too. Maybe not at the level of Clemson but enough to have fun!
Congrats on the Calhoun word. Exciting!
Mixed day here. DD finally got word she is NMF…and she learned she will not advance to finals weekend for a big scholarship she was up for. She’s disappointed but moving on with life.
@grandscheme nmf is an awesome honor. She should be so proud.
And congratulations to all the other students who are getting NMF notifications
@lifegarding He is 3/4 Ragdoll and 1/4 Siamese blue lynx mitted! Has a very sweet Ragdoll disposition.
@grandscheme I loved Udel and the vibe there but for now dd is bought into the big time athletics as a draw.
Going to visit both while students there and she can get a better feel if both schools
@burghdad Thanks. It is exciting.
Those of you with kids with lots of AP/DE credits - be sure to double check that those credits don’t negatively effect their status for housing. We have a friend whose daughter wasn’t able to get freshman housing because she “technically” wasn’t a freshman because of her credits. Because housing is impacted at her school, she was not able to get housing at all and ended up having to live off campus in an apartment by herself. Not optimal, for sure.
@burghdad I’m so happy for you and your D! I was confident good news was coming your way. It’s so nice it has arrived.
@burghdad Notre Dame’s mens basketball coach, Mike Brey, came from UDel where he was coach. UDel gave the Ravens their QB. And then there’s Elena Delle Donne So there’s some big time athletics!
I’m projecting my own issues at you. We are going through the college process for the fourth time and proximity and access have become higher priorities!
@grandscheme I’m only on number two and proximity and access have become more important than the first time around. I hate to think about what I am going to be like with number four. A fifty mile radius? That will give us Philly schools, Princeton, TCNJ, and Rutgers if she wants big. That will work.
@MACmiracle #3 was offered a full ride plus housing, travel, study abroad etc-to a great school…in Abu Dhabi. He was not happy when I pointed out that he had missed the only condition we had established! I felt guilty for a long time but got over that. As the boomerang kid in the Xfinity commercial just said, “in some cultures, sons stay home til they’re 40”!! I think your 50 mile radius will be quite reasonable!
@grandscheme Some days I think I would be quite happy to send my #3 to Abu Dhabi.
ETA: My mom had a college roommate whose parents moved while she was at away college, without telling her. My mom said the young woman was traumatized. I don’t know why I’m putting this together with Abu Dhabi… On bad days, when I’m feeling exhausted by parenting, I guess I get to thinking how a little space would be nice.
ROFL!
I offered my daughter my own version of a full ride.
If she attended the local university (which does have a nursing program, but not as good as UC) she could live at home rent free. Personal chef, laundry and maid services would continue, as well as the use of a newer car.
She didn’t even want to apply. =))
We happen to be in Miami for a school visit, and the school shooting in the area weighs heavily on my mind. We have a new principal at S18’s school this year who has a background as a Marine chaplain in Iraq. One of the first things he did was tighten down security at the school. No more open campus, all visitors check in through a single reception point, etc… It was inconvenient for after school parent volunteer actvities, but its value, and sadly necessity, are more evident to me today.
UK Lewis Honors decision day is today by email. Possible U of L GEMS decision also, since they said two weeks and that was at the interview day on Saturday 2/3, so I am thinking either today or early next week. These two could do a lot to help him make up his mind. A no from either definitely would probably seal it. If both are yes then a tough decision.
@vistajay Our HS has a similar thing during the school day. But …
After school you can get in at various points without a guard because the school is open to anyone for athletics, etc. And, before school starts in the summer, the kids (and anyone) can come and go as they like. I’ve walked in there like I own the place many, many times. There are no metal detectors. There is nothing to stop anyone from hiding something somewhere for future use.
It makes me crazy.
