Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@LOUKYDAD looking forward to hearing about UK Lewis Honors for your S. Congratulations on GEMS!

@ChattaChia I remember the UF murders well, and am sorry you experienced that fear.

UK waited until 5:00 today to send the Lewis Honors decision email. Probably a good idea if you want to escape before the “why didn’t my kid get in?” calls begin.

Well, they won’t be getting a call from me because DS is in!

DD is all signed up for registration in May - The flight and accommodations are booked and now to begin to plan the road trip to drop her off in August! Reality is setting in and I know the next couple of months can’t come fast enough for her.

Congratulations @LOUKYDAD !!! Now your S has some decisions to make!

@melvin123 agreed he does. Tonight I am just very proud and my heart is full for him. Glad I have this group to share thoughts with so I don’t over share with him :).

@loukydad that is great news. We had good news today as well as my daughter got an invitation to udel distinguished scholars weekend.

It’s so funny how two weeks ago on a back to back Thursday and Friday rejections to unc and uva and she was so upset and now on back to back days she gets accepted to Clemson Honors College and the Distingiushed Scholars invite and is very happy.

@burghdad Congratulations to your D! So glad you’re getting such great news!

@burghdad that is so great to hear! Congrats to your D!

@burghdad Congratulations on the great news!

@LOUKYDAD just wondering but if your son has Gemc why would he even consider UK?

Our DD committed to go to her top choice two weeks ago, and today in the mail came additional substantial scholarships from the two safety schools that she didn’t decide to go to. She already declined both over a week ago. At least this time we have an excuse for not having to choose between them, but it makes it harder when we realize that she probably won’t get any merit from her top choice. I was hoping that if she declined we wouldn’t have to see how much of a merit scholarship she was going to get from the safety schools, but I guess that wasn’t the case .

@vistajay agree. D came home today and said school security told teachers no exceptions to the locked door rule. She was also upset the teachers haven’t talked about the shooting. She has a class in a portable and said all she could think of today was whether the portables were secure.

Congrats @LOUKYDAD and @burghdad. Now you get to the fun part— being wooed by the colleges!

@Booajo I have been crying on and off. Don’t want to make D sad but the little girl who tugs my heartstrings is Jamie Guttenberg. As a dance mom myself I can’t imagine losing my dancer. Dance companies all around the country are wearing orange ribbons in her memory this weekend.

Tomorrow we will be off on one of our last college visits. I just set my alarm for five and put the new puppy to sleep in a crate in a kid’s room so I can try to get a good sleep for the first time this week.

Anyone else making a visit over the long weekend?

@MACmiracle have a great trip tomorrow! Hope you’ll both get some good information from it.

@burghdad If it came down to just choosing between the schools and the honors colleges, he has always seemed more excited to attend UK. Both have big automatic merit for NMF, with U of L being a bit more generous, but UK is close enough where cost difference isn’t much.

Especially from dad’s perspective, GEMS is a big game changer. Not only the program itself and the guaranteed admission. The med school has historically been giving the incoming GEMS cohort a substantial scholarship (think half tuition) if they matriculate to U of L’s med school. Most all of them do. The scholarship isn’t guaranteed, subject to future budget restraints, and of course he could change his mind about med school altogether. So I don’t know how exactly to factor it in, but it is something when you begin to ponder the debt most doctors are in when they come out of med school. Then again part of me also thinks taking into account the financial side of grad school is thinking to far ahead at this point.

If he hadn’t got GEMS, once he got into honors at UK I think this would have been over. I am struggling right now to keep my own opinion to myself. I am determined not to say too much! I just want to make sure he thoroughly understands his options and to make his own decision. And in reality it can only be his decision anyway since he has most all of it funded either way.

@MACmiracle - D and I are off to UCF at the end of next week. We “may” find time for a theme park visit as well. This will be the last real piece of info-gathering - then all that’s left is the decision!

S18 made his Varsity Lacrosse team for the last time. Relief after an injury last fall. I can’t believe this will be the last time I’ll watch him play.
