Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Congratulations to kids of @burghdad and @LOUKYDAD! That is awesome news!

@macmiracle we are heading to ASU for their more2explore weekend. ASU is not my daughter’s top choice, but it is a contender since she was accepted to Barrett. Her schedule includes a presentation/tour of the business school and then two sessions on Barrett. This will be the most comprehensive tour we’ll have had, I think. The UC tours only take you around campus.

In the meantime, she’s had her first acceptance in California to CSU Long Beach. Waiting (im)patiently for the rest of the CSUs and the UCs before making a decision.

Have fun, @MACmiracle!

Congratulations on the acceptances, everyone!

We’ve got a case of flu here. The little one tested positive yesterday after coming home sick Thursday. He’s on tamiflu and has been resting and drinking fluids. Tons better today and no fever so far, but he’s still going to rest all weekend.

Glad your little one got the tamiflu in time for it to work well @apraxiamom. Hopefully nobody else catches it!

CSULB is my alma mater, @bacmom

We are here in AZ and lots of kids go to Barrett and love it. Too big of a school for my daughter’s liking, but I am pretty sure one of the draws of Barrett is priority registration which is a big sell for schools that are enormous like ASU. Have a great trip - this is the time to visit AZ. August, not so much!

@MACmiracle we have all next week off so we are leaving tonight for MiamiOH’s Make it Miami day and then to WashU for a tour. That will be it for college visits.

@bacmom please let us know what you think of Barrett. My S18 got in too but we won’t be visiting for another month.

Mercy, I just googled how many students are at Arizona State.

@amominaz My D was very excited to have her first CA acceptance. She has her eye on a UC or SDSU, but she really likes the looks of CSULB too. I’m just concerned with the cost of off campus housing in that area. Thanks for the opinion on Barrett!

@lovespink I certainly will. I’ve loved everything I’ve read about Barrett so far, so I’m hopeful we enjoy the visit.

@bearcatfan my daughter prefers a large school and ASU is certainly that!

@PlateauMama we couldn’t make a Make it Miami date, so we are doing a normal visit day and personalized tour the first week of April. Would love to hear what you think and anything we should see while there.

Also, visiting Purdue on the same trip for Purdue’s for Me day. Anyone have suggestions for stuff to see, do or places to eat?

This is the end of visits for us unless he is torn between two schools and we decide to go back to them. Hope that we don’t have to do that.

On the other kid fronts, I had my little one home all week with croup. I took her to the ER because she was having trouble breathing and I wanted to ensure it wasn’t the flu. It’s just been odd for Croup to hit so hard.

Waiting for various HS acceptances for DS22. Got into a local environmental Charter school Friday and waiting for a Magnet STEM at the end of the month. It’s tough when a child doesn’t really know specifically what they want.

This year I have a MS and HS graduation. In 2022 I will have MS, HS and College…assuming 4 years.

@bacmom and @lovespink, my D has visited Barrett twice. She really likes it, but she’s decided she isn’t a desert person. Barrett students really get the VIP treatment. Facilites are great. I’m a big believer!

Re: CSULB - Please forgive me, but I’ve lost track of whether or not those of you reporting CSULB acceptances also have NMF kids. If you do, I believe CSULB has a very good scholarship for NMFs. It may be competitive, and it’s been at least a year since I looked it up. Back when I did, it was a full ride. It’s one of the only ones in CA if it still exists.

S hasn’t applied, but it was going to be our in-state back up.

@LOUKYDAD I’m so happy for your S!! I can’t wait to hear what he decides.

Congrats @LOUKYDAD and @burghdad ! It must feel so great to have those wins! <:-P

As I said to my D yesterday, our roller coaster has finished it’s long chain drag to the top of the hill, it’s time to raise our hands and start screaming as we begin the ups and downs of visiting and deciding! We are on a visit this weekend and in 2 weeks we’ll hit 2 schools in one weekend, then we’ll either have one more, or be done. Hard to say. I don’t know what she’s thinking except perhaps that she wishes she didn’t have to make a decision at all. 8-|

@ChattaChia I’ve got a '22 also! :-h

Big sigh of relief here! After a bit of a dry spell, D received an invitation to UCSB Chancellors Reception today. The invite says it’s for “top applicants” and we’ve been told they inform the students on that day that they’ve been admitted. This is her financial, academic and geographic safety, not to mention a great fit for her socially. Definitely a contender! Still waiting for a few more decisions but it’s really nice to exhale knowing she has her ace in the hole.

@Veronica02 my S18 also got the Chancellors invite. Very exciting - great school and location. My S still not saying what his top choice is so no way to even guess where he will be going. He was impressed with University of the Pacific at the Powell Scholars interview yesterday though. Just not sure about the surrounding area. Campus is beautiful though!

Other happenings next week are some visits to other UCs and then down to SoCal. He is taking his GF to her winter formal. Need to get a new tie to better match her dress this weekend.

The hubs and I both attended UCSB. Great school, gorgeous area.

Alas, it was NFW for S, so he didn’t even apply.

@apraxiamom I hope your little one is feeling okay tonight and everyone else stays healthy.

@GertrudeMcFuzz , @bacmom, @PlateauMama, @1822mom , @ChattaChia , and @lovespink , and anyone else visiting, safe travels! I hope the visits are fruitful.

We visited the college where my oldest D attended today. D18 had it in the list because I encouraged the app, but she wasn’t completely convinced. Today’s visit really changed that. It gave me a new appreciation of the college as well, since we have visited so many colleges by now and can really compare. They just have their act together. Everything about it seemed right. I would guess it’s now a number one or two.

Thinking of you today, @Booajo. I hope your S’s state swim meet went well! Our girls’ team took second, the guys first. It was a very emotional meet, especially for the seniors. They are tight. The senior parents were all a bit of a mess, too. Not me, of course. :((

Ooh @ShrimpBurrito my S18 was very happy with his results. He took another second off one race and held his other time. His 2 relays also moved up from seeds. He won’t swim anymore I think (maybe summer fun team), but no regrets about going out! I’m a bit sad, but hopeful that he will now move seamlessly to track season (once we figure out this whole college thing of course!)

It is less emotional here for the team because my S is the only senior. And they only have one junior–so they should have good days ahead I hope!

Congrats to your kids (I believe you have multiple doing this crazy sport!)
