Took DD to the Dr. today to get her immunizations updated and the forms for the University filled out. She has had a cold all week - Turns out, double ear infection and an RX for meds. The things kids will go through to get out of getting shots
She hasn’t had an ear infection since…uh, I can’t even remember - toddler years maybe.
Anyway, we know what she needs, Dr. reviewed her records and we will return in a few weeks to shoot her up
@Booajo while overnights can be illuminating, they can also be misleading. Too much can depend on who he gets for an overnight host or what’s going on at the school that particular weekend. Don’t get me wrong, I’d prefer if my kid did them, but if my kid didn’t want to, I don’t know that I’d insist. I’m just thinking that if your S is uncomfortable going into the weekend, he’s more likely to have a bad time and have an experience that isn’t really representative of what his experience would be there as a student. Just my $.02 for another perspective.
I agree @melvin123. My daughter had done two two week residence camps at Vanderbilt and loved loved loved it. Became her top choice FOR SURE. But it had been a couple years so she wanted to go back to do the “real” tour. She did the half day hang out with a student thing and it almost turned her completely off. She went back the next day kind of reticently for the tour and had a completely different experience, fell back in love, applied ED and now will be attending next year. So you just never know.
Complicated because this is actually a recruit visit–and team dynamics is probably something he should know about before picking school. So not really random (which is good I think), but more pressure in some ways. I guess I will just gently encourage without forcing.
I’m trying to understand the Meningitis vaccine
When we moved to TX - TX schools required it and our NV Physician gave it to her before we left (not required in NV schools at the time until college age) DD was in 7th grade. I just looked at her shot records, she never received the “booster” that the records said she should have gotten 4 years ago. Oops…
She is now 19.5 so does she need one dose or two or do we start all over?
I’ll ask her Dr as now I am curious but its Friday afternoon and Dr is gone for the day.
There’s also a ‘new’ meningitis vax for Group B meningococcal bacteria. That wasn’t covered by the old shot. My kids had the old one when they were 13 or so, and now they have to have the new one. It’s a 2 shot series that has to be given a month apart. It also makes your arm really really sore, so I’m trying to dance around swim team schedules for it! DD has one, she’ll get the final in the one week gap between HS swim team and summer swim. DS I guess will have to get his first one that week and then the booster at the end of summer.
Actually there are two menginitis vaccines.
The meningitis conjugate vaccine Menactra/Menevo I think (?) covers serogroups A,C,Y,W. and is recommended for middle school age and a booster 5 years later (16 y).
Then in 2015 they came out with a new Menginitis B vaccine (Bexsero and Trumenba) which covers serogroup B.
Young adults living in residence halls might be more susceptible to getting meningitis B and there have been recent outbreaks at some college campuses.
@sc Anteater and Mommdc - thank you! I had no idea a new one had come around. She did receive the Menevo in 2012
I’ll call her Dr on Monday but from what I am seeing it appears we start over with the Meni B - her Dr has college aged and high school kids herself, I am sure she is on top of this but I’ll call to be sure.
Thanks for the information - I looked it up online but was just confused.
@birdie3 I know on my D’s UCI portal it has a link to their immunization requirements (the link is broken at the moment but I assume it will be fixed at some point!)
The requirements were linked under the “what are your next steps” section once she accepted enrollment.
The link was from the student health center
She needs an update on the Tdap and the Meningitis - she has everything else as they were school requirements. We also had to complete a TB screening questionnaire.
Reading the requirement:
“A Meningitis (A, C, Y, W-135) vaccine within the past 5 years is required for all Freshman and any students living in on campus residence halls”
I’ll definitely will discuss with her Dr.
