Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Big congrats, @LOUKYDAD !

@Momma2018, since its 2 weeks away, why not ask S ahead of time what he’d like for you to do. As much as we parents get wrapped up in the college process and the decisions, it is hard to step back, but in the end it is our kids’ moment.

@LOUKYDAD how exciting! Congratulations!! I thought he had been liking Kentucky? But wow with the brown fellow and GEMS, he will have an amazing experience at Louisville.

And I’m with @shelleee wouldn’t it be great to get all the info from a school at one time? Also wish that we would have all decisions back this month. Some will be in April for us which then feels like he will almost no time to decide.

@Momma2018 - I agree with @ShrimpBurrito; ask him what he wants. He is the one who did all the hard work to get to this point, let this be his moment the way he wants it.

@LOUKYDAD awesome news!
@Momma2018 these are the moments sent to try us. I would let him sleep but I’d also probably gently remind about this decision coming the night before in the hopes to see my kid in the am.

As far as odds, still 6 schools to hear from. I think after this weekend we will know more as he may FINALLY make the big versus small school decision. Right now, 4 small schools (~2k), 2 medium schools (~7k), and 4 big schools (15-30k) in play. Currently admitted to 1 of the smalls and 3 of the bigs.

Good advice @ShrimpBurrito @amominaz @Booajo. I seem more focused on the dates than he does but sometimes I think he is just trying to act like he does not care as much because he is afraid of being disappointed. Maybe I will wait until the day before to remind him and see what he wants to do. (With my luck, he will decide to sleep over at a friend’s house that night!!)

It can be annoying when colleges use snail mail but at least a big packet gives me a good indication without needing to open it!

@LOUKYDAD congratulations to your son! Your pride and excitement shine through!!

Congratulations to everyone receiving good news about admissions and/or scholarships!! Looking forward to hearing about lots more in the coming weeks!

Congratulations @LOUKYDAD !

@lovespink He definitely liked Kentucky too. But between these two programs it is really a no brainer now. It was clear in the process that they really bring together the entire resources of the school to give these fortunate ten kids an incredible experience.

I was with him at a dinner last Friday night for the finalists, and I could barely get him to leave. I could tell then that he would love being a part of this group if he were chosen.

The GEMS program was a big deal too and if he was going to pass on it it was going to take every bit of self control I could muster not too tell him I expected that he was going to regret the decision down the road.

His mom and I just said we are kind of in shock right now. Not that we don’t think he deserves it. It was just such a long shot, and you support them as they swing for it, but still you just don’t believe it could happen.

Congratulations @LOUKYDAD !

DD has 2 rejections & 2 (good) acceptances so far, but she is waiting on decisions from TEN schools in March - yikes! She’s at boarding school & has managed this process independently from me, and I don’t have access to portals or emails etc. So, I won’t know until she knows & decides to pick up the phone and call!

This will be a loooong month

Congratulations to everyone whose kids have made their decisions. Still awaiting RD decisions and financial information here, . D18 is 0/6 in scholarships so far, but has had some unique interviews and is learning to fail gracefully. Now she will turn her attention to recycling those essays for some local opportunities, fingers crossed. D18’s former Promposal date already made a new poster, bought new flowers, and successfully promposed to girl #2. They have remained/became better friends and D18 says she’d still rather go with her original friend group than a date she doesn’t know as well. Glad that was resolved without incident.

S received a snail mail letter today awarding him $1,000 from a combo of the CA-HI Elks Association and our local district. Very nice, and takes some of the sting out of not advancing.

OMG @LOUKYDAD, just went and read about Browns Fellow scholarship, that sounds AMAZING!! Congrats like a thousand times over!!!

My DD18 has decided to go to prom with her friends! A few weeks ago she had decided not to go. She is shy about her body and she had decided she was too embarrassed to go. I just don’t want her to feel like she missed out on it if she doesn’t go, so I’m glad she had a change of heart. She even bought a dress that we picked together online earlier in the week, and it looks pretty (she got it yesterday). Her friend is going to do her makeup and she asked me to make an appointment with my hair dresser to get her hair done. She seems more excited now. I hope she is able to relax and have fun and not feel self conscious, she has a really great group of friends.

Congrats @LOUKYDAD !

Mixed news for D18 in past few days. Did not advance to national semifinals for ELKS MVS.

Just finished up an intensive 2-day honors/scholarship selection weekend at her #1 choice (OOS), and she will know tomorrow if she is 1 of 15 who get the premier scholarship, or if she is an alternate.

On the way home from that interview today, she got a call from her #2 choice (in-state safety) offering her a spot in a selective leadership program within her major (+ $1000 scholarship), which she had interviewed for last week.

Sorry your D didn’t advance, @EmptyNester2B. (My S didn’t either.) It looks like the Universe has wonderful things in store for her, though, so yay for that.

Congrats @LOUKYDAD I’m so excited for your family!! <:-P

I have real empathy for everyone waiting on decisions this month. Some days this process feels endless. In our house, the only decision we’re waiting on is the one my D has to make. Our last admission came in two weeks ago and she actually narrowed her list down to a final 4!

That’s the good news, the bad news was 3 of the 4 had never been visited so we are smack in the middle of that process and I keep hoping for clarity, but she’s giving me none.

:-< I think we’re going to May 1 on this.

Hang in there everyone!!

Glad to decision the decision train chugging along! Congrats everyone!

We had a kind of summit meeting here last night, starting to move D toward a decision. She really hates to make decisions & this big one has been distressing her. We looked at the per year cost and did some pro/con lists. In the end, it was UCF by a nose over ASU, due to the difference in cost and the non-desert climate. She really likes the model of the huge campus with all of its opportunities & activity, with the small honors college for support & a more intimate experience. So that is a huge leap forward. I’ve told her she can change her mind anytime up to May 1, but at least we’ve gotten this far. Phew!

Just a PSA to remind your kiddos to keep checking those portals. S18 finally re-checked his this morning and he has been invited to apply to honors college for one of his accepted schools. Needs 2 essays by 3/15 which is do-able but freaked me out that he could have missed the deadline. They sent acceptance letter by snail mail as well as portal but never emailed or mailed about honors college (honestly - I had lost track of which schools auto admit and which want another application).
