Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@momma2018 you can file a police report without filing an insurance claim.

Just returned from dropping DD’18 off at the Air Force Academy - - a new chapter begins. Much thanks to all of you for helping us along this journey.

Thanks @memmom2018 - I did not realize that. That sounds like the best route. It just doesn’t seem worth the insurance surcharges to his record to file the claim when our deductible is $500 and the damage is not too bad.

Wow @glido - what a day for you! How do you feel?

@Momma2018

Just keep in mind that filing a police report may create an accident history on Carfax. We ran over a bed frame in the carpool lane and the police came along and wrote up a report. Ended up having no damage but lived with it on Carfax. But if you think there may be liability with the other person may be wise to file.

@Momma2018, check with your insurance broker. My D has had her share of fender benders so I know my company’s policy, which is that you have up to a year to report a claim. I would not file a police report (sounds like your son was at fault so I’m not sure that would help) and just hang tight on filing a claim as well if your insurance allows you to wait.

In the future: have a kid involved in any fender bender at least take a photo of both cars while at the scene.

Does anyone remember the book or link that helped with writing an essay and I believe the author even Skyped with some students to help them brainstorm or edit? Also, was there a thread or list of people who would read/edit essays? I didn’t use it for S18 but am helping a friend S19 and know it was very helpful for many.

And the days are flying by…
Anyone else having a tough time emotionally with your child’s leaving home soon for college?
We are so excited for my son, and we know he will have a wonderful time at college. But we will miss him, every day.

@Momma2018 - mixed feelings, very proud of her willingness to put country before herself; very happy that she has such a wonderful opportunity, but a little blue that she is out of the home and won’t be back for summers or a job near home. Thanks for asking.

@S18D20mom I tried to post the link to the Hack the College Essay website but I got a message that my post was tagged for moderation.

You should be able to google it and find it easily. If you have a problem, let me know and I can pm the link.

@TheGreyKing It’s going to be the hardest thing I have ever done. I’m trying to stay positive and saying a prayer daily. I mean this is what we prepared and hoped for them, right? I am honestly so excited for D18. She’ll have the time of her life, only this life will be 1,800 miles away from home. Maybe we need to start another thread to support and encourage each other so we don’t spring a leak every single time someone asks us about our kid next Fall. :((

Road trip to Alabama begins in 35 days…

DS took care of getting his POA signed this morning. He felt very adult.

D18 jumped out of a perfectly good airplane on Friday. It’s something she’s wanted to do for a long time. We went to north Lake Tahoe for a short vacation and drove over to Skydive Truckee for the jump. DW and I did a tandem jump 25 years ago south of Seattle and this one was just as spectacular (Mt Rainier as a backdrop in WA, Lake Tahoe this time). That first step is a doozy!

On Sunday, D18 and I took an extended glider ride out of Truckee. I think that was actually more fun because we had time to take in everything. The pilot was happy because we wanted him to do fun things, not just glide, so he did wingovers, zero-g arcs, buzzed a forest fire station on a ridgeline, etc.

@droppedit you are all a lot more adventurous than I am!!!

@droppedit, I also jumped out of a plane years ago.

Never.Again.

Do any of you know of great places to rent or buy text bools online. Back in the day you either bought new or used. At the end you sold them back or kept them. I feel at a loss on what to do or where to start. Just want to get the best bang for $$.

@Texas1820

We’ve had luck buying used on Ebay and renting on Amazon. The nice thing about the Amazon rental is that there is a grace period where you can return them free of charge if the professor says the text is not needed once the class starts.

@Texas1820 I was just looking at this today. It seems like the college bookstore was more expensive for sure. (at least for my DD college) Some of the options were to rent the book and read it online like a digital copy. And most had the standard: New, Used, Rental Used, and the “kindle type” options. I did find Amazon was very cheap compared to the college. I haven’t started comparing other sites to Amazon but will checking in to that too. The good note was that they books seem to be cheaper than what I remember back in the day.

We have had good luck with both Amazon and Chegg for books.
