We leave for Alabama on Thursday. It’s like trying to push extra water through a funnel right now. Time has run out, but there is so much to do.
Hang in there, everyone! We’ll all get through this, tears and time both. At Thanksgiving, we’ll be overjoyed to welcome them home to hear all of their exploits.
Yep @DiotimaDM , already looking forward to the visit home.
It also helps take away the sting to know that the boy is heading to an environment with so many great opportunities. This freshman year is going to be busy for him, but filled with new and important things. That’s exciting!
Exactly. Most of the time I’m excited about everything S has ahead of him. The pangs are the exception, not the rule.
@apraxiamom I hope he feels better soon. There has been an awful cold going around this summer. We all got it.
D has three weeks to go which feels like a lot less pressure than the rest of you. I wanted so much to get away for a couple of days as a family but everyone is over committed. Both of my teens are working two jobs and the county fair is this month for H and my youngest. D18 said she might just keep working until it’s time to leave. I’m still hoping something can work out, even a few hours at the beach together or a hike and picnic.
College bill still has not been paid, and today D just handed over some necessary paperwork required for the outside scholarship she’s getting. Nothing like waiting to the last minute!
@DavidPuddy My middle son is at Bama. He is going into senior year, it flies so fast. Far from home but a school with incredible opportunities if the students take advantage. Good luck to him. Have you joined the FB parent pages?
Youngest DD is 15 days out. She needs to go early for a scholarship orientation before the regular orientation! Not to happy about it, but nice to get her moved in early and not have it be so chaotic. We are still looking at dorm items, and I think we are behind.
We already got notice of Parents Weekend. Ugh. We’ve been on campus a number of times already and I really don’t want to go yet again. Will do it if she wants, but what is the main purpose?
OMG! I bought S a set of microfleece sheets for winter instead of flannel because I couldn’t find good flannel for a price I wanted to pay. I took them out of the package and washed them today, and they are SO soft! I want to crawl in myself and it’s 113 here!
They’re heavy, though. The top sheet could be a light blanket all by itself.
Just wondering, does anyone else’s kid still not have their dorm and roommate assignment yet? We don’t, and the FB parents’ group for DS’s class has lots of upset and anxious posts from parents who really want to know. I’d like to know too, but I’m not upset by it, we know which dorm he’s in since he was accepted into a Learning Community, and he’s the kind of kid who isn’t stressed out thinking of who his roomie might be, unlike our DD '15. It also helps that he’s our 2nd kid and he’s going just 45 minutes away. (We definitely overpacked for DD '15 who’s at a school 3+ hours away)
S18 just had his dentist appt and according to xrays, wisdom teeth need to come out soon. Ugh. Going for a follow up with oral surgeon. I think S has a shortened winter break due to sports so hoping it can wait until May.
@crepes, I’m surprised they haven’t released that information yet. I think your son’s attitude is a good one, but I can see being a little upset. It’s impossible to coordinate who is bringing what. When is move in?
Move in is in 8 days, and D leaves today on a trip to visit her grandparents, so she’ll only have 3 days home before she ships off. Ay yi yi!
@crepes I, also, think they are late w/ that information, but at least he knows the building. DD was to find out the dorm and room assignment on July 30, but they did get notified a few days early. She wasn’t happy as she got the supposedly worst dorm on campus, it is the oldest.
We looked at the floor plan and it isn’t too far from the showers, the study center, or the elevator. Her room also overlooks a lovely green space. All in all, I think it turned out really well. She now likes it too, especially since she also hooked up with a room mate that she likes, so far.
I cannot believe it’s August. Move in is in about 2 weeks.
I am pretty much ready as far as supplies go. Got all bedding and towels washed, got OTC meds for fever, cold, diarrhea.
Got laundry and cleaning supplies. Ethernet cable, surge protector, etc for S.
We have furniture for my D’s apartment.
Both of them are working a lot, and then spending time with friends as much as possible.
S’s birthday is coming up next week. We are done with dentist, eye appointment and he has a physical coming up. Wisdom teeth came out last year.
We have about ten days til move in. FINALLY got S18 to go with us to BBB yesterday and loaded up on some additional items. Rented a minivan for the 6 hr trip. Headed out over the weekend to L.A. for a quick family visit with D15, who has been there most of the summer and starts her senior year next week. S18 is picking daily fights with his stressed out mother, but otherwise we are hanging in there!
OMG. The expiration date on the milk I just bought is move in day.
I’m so excited for her.
But I’m going to miss her so much!
Been away for the summer. Good luck to all the kids.
I was sitting in church this last Sunday and just busted into tears. They were good tears but I had to get up and leave. It hit me that this was the last weekend that we would all be sitting together. My husband looked at me like I had lost my mind. His response was this isn’t the last time we will all be together just a few months.
Son is pushing back at this time so this is helping me be ready to send him off. His last statement was " I hate being at home because all you do is nag at me" I just want you to clean your room and get packed for school. I just smile and grit my teeth. We are in single digit’s so all will be good.
@laralei
Yep, we are on the FB parents page. A lot of activity there for sure.
Just got back from visiting DD in Colorado Springs - was able to bring her a few items for her dorm. (She has been there for six weeks already, but she wasn’t allowed any creature comforts until yesterday.) She showed us around the school and we met her roommate and her parents. Classes start tomorrow! Off she goes!
@Momma2018 We are sending D18 with four less teeth to college! Last month she was miserable about it and lectured us about unnecessary surgical procedures lalalalala
@suzy100 @laralei our move-in is Aug 26, so we’re 18 days out–it will be tight coordinating with roomies but we have almost everything we need.
The parent FB page is jumping today because parents found a back-door hack; there’s a way to see the dorm and room # on the college portal. A parent had posted the hack here on CC last year and it worked again this year, and if the school does what they did last year, full info should be released tomorrow.
That still doesn’t give us roommate info or whether it’s a double or triple and the school doesn’t have any floor plans available either (unlike DD15’s school which posts blueprints and square footage)
DD20 and DS31 (yes 31!) started back today. Moving DS18 into his dorm room next Wednesday morning.
So I have one starting college, one learning to drive, and one starting kindergarten. What a year!
