Parents of the HS Class of 2019 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@nukesmom Nice!! Congrats.

@carolinamom2boys That is great news!!! Nice to get some merit aid too. Flagler is such a nice school.

Doing a happy dance! DD just submitted her final application, her #1 choice and 10th application. This process felt like it was soooooo long, but looking back at notes, she actually finished early than my sons did in past years.

And, she learned of 2 acceptances today, Evergreen State and Columbia College of Chicago.

Now, just to wait for aid letters, final ACT test and 3 scholarship apps.

Congratulations @Longhaul that’s wonderful! Have you visited Evergreen?

@eandesmom , no, we haven’t. I was surprised she wanted to apply given she never visited. She loves the Open Curriculum in concept. Her #2 is parents #1, so, I’m blocking all others and hoping that will be the final. I’m hoping to keep her in my East Coast time zone.

Gotcha. So yes, in concept that is super appealing. Our GC’s push it hard. However it is not a popular choice with local kids or employers and has a higher average age than most 4 year colleges, partially due to a pretty high in state CC transfer rate if memory serves. My S17 was interested in it for a short bit. From an employer standpoint I think it just comes off a little to much ā€œcolor your own parachuteā€ and folks really don’t take it seriously.

It is in state for us, obviously gets a lot of CTCL love nationally but our school has sent 1 (and only 1) student there for the past 3 years, with a max of 10 applying in any given year. Take that with the grain of salt that it is offered with but if you just look at our in state options we sent (in 2018)

53 to the closest CC
28 to the local branch of our flagship
31 to the closest directional
8 to one directional in the middle of the state
8 to a directional on the other side of the state
12 to the land grant state university
32 to to the flagship
1 to Evergreen

Evergreen is a lot closer than one of the directionals and the land grant, and there are other CC’s that I didn’t list that get some traction. So take it for what it’s worth but that’s over half of last years class who chose in state public options, and while we are a solid and well respected HS we certainly aren’t a super competitive high stats one either.

It is also kind of a concrete block in the middle of a forest. Not that it matters to a lot of kids but it does to some.

Evergreen also has a reputation for high drug use.

High pot use, but so do a lot of colleges. I’ve not heard of anything beyond that. Doesn’t mean it’s not there but pot is legal in the state and it’s an older student population so not unexpected.

It is however extremely liberal even by west coast standards and that might not be for everyone.

Off topic, apologies, but I can’t figure it out and I there are a lot of experienced people here—how do I change my user name?

Congratulations @Longhaul ! Enjoy the breather after all those applications and let the acceptances continue to roll in!

@Longhaul are you familiar with the Bret Weinstein controversy at Evergreen in 2017? Just google his name and Evergreen and you’ll get lots of hits and you can pick your source of information about it. Here’s Weinstein’s own version although it may be behind a paywall: https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-campus-mob-came-for-meand-you-professor-could-be-next-1496187482

@jjjoanne – I think the rules are you cannot change your user name.

@longhaul nice progress to be sure. Congratulations.

D19 received an e-mail from a school she recently submitted an EA app. Apparently, she applied as test optional but still had her score sent to the school. Don’t get me started. Anyway, they advised her to give them approval to consider her test scores since she may qualify for some merit aid.

@DCNatFan That’s really nice to hear. Hope she likes the school.

@JBSeattle and @eandesmom, I’ll be honest, I think Evergreen really made the list because of Riot Grrrl . And because anything on the opposite coast sounds good to a teen. By kid 3, I learned enough to let some applications be

@DCNatFan Yay!!! I am crossing my fingers that one of my kids gets merit aid!

@DCNatFan
Awesome! You should have said ā€œWe will give you permission…for a price!!!ā€

Some test optional schools do require test scores for merit aid.

Is my S19 the last on this thread to FINALLY submit an application? Just hit ā€œsendā€ an hour ago for two EA applications due today. Nothing like waiting until the last minute.

He and dh leave early tomorrow morning for two college visits - Hobart and Marist. He’s making some progress…
