Parents of the HS Class of 2019 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@Turquoise52 – D’s highest criterion – “it’s where the gods go!”

Can’t argue with that.

@dcnatfan we were there too! On S19s top list. So is Vtech - that will also be a fun visit. Agree about the gut instinct.

@Turquoise52 Her somewhat rare major was a big deciding factor. Location also- first she wanted far away, now she’s good with being an easy drive from home. She also considered school colors and mascot!

Mixed results to report. On Friday, D heard from UMich. She had been deferred from EA, and got denied on Friday. No big surprise, given their acceptance rate and her stats. Then discovered the issue with UConn, when RD decisions were released and she didn’t get one. Called yesterday and confirmed that they did not receive her transcript until after the RD deadline. Her GC is going to call because she believes it was sent well before the deadline. Not a huge loss, since it’s not a top choice, just frustrating.

Finally, some good news…D was accepted to UMass yesterday! Yay! She spent the day touring Ohio State, another accepted school, and really liked it. She said she could see herself there. I’m so glad she has options.

Current status…
Accepted: James Madison, Ohio State, URI (w merit), Clemson, UMass
Deferred: Tulane, UMiami
Denied: Northeastern, UMichigan
Still waiting: UConn, UMaryland

@momzilla2D Excellent news about UMass; sorry bout Michigan - that is such a tough admit these days, especially from out of state. Those are some great choices!

@momzilla2D Looks like the few (frustrating!) bumps in the road won’t hold her back. Perseverance is key! Good luck to her in making decisions.

@momzilla2D
Congrats, getting close to needing to make a decision!! Nice that she has some choices!

We are instate, yes. He had a 30 ACT and a truly excellent letter from one of his teachers (4 years with this teacher). He is also a recruitable athlete, but didn’t respond to the coach there.

How do you request a better financial aid package? Do you email an appeal or call the office directly? My kid is a first generation college student that requires additional aid in order to attend any of the top 5 choices. If anyone has a template they used, it would certainly assist me. Thank you.

@my2greatkids When my D needed to do this, she called the financial aid office directly. They instructed her to send an email detailing all the important information. In her case, she was trying to get them to match the offer of a different school. They did eventually come up with a better offer.

That’s his choice, but you get no additional consideration (or money) if you COULD be recruited but choose not to play in college.

Back from admitted student yesterday at Miami Ohio and D19 loved it. Looks like it has moved to the top of the list. She still wants to visit VT before making a decision.

Dcnatfan - can i ask what your d loved about miami oh? I am taking d19 there (and xavier, cincinnati and dayton) for admitted student events the first weekend in April.

@Massmom10 She liked the look and size of the campus - very walkable. She loved the attached town and all the shops and restaurants. The student union building is amazing and the renovated dorms are very nice. Everyone we came across was amazingly friendly. All the students we saw seemed happy and several offered assistance when we were walking around and asked if we needed help or directions. She just felt comfortable is the best way to put it. We have visited a lot of schools and I think this is first one that she felt a connection.

Wow you are getting in a lot of tours over a weekend - good luck.

Final decision in - accepted to RPI. It was a big reach so we are shocked. That said, he is debating (not really) between Concordia and McGill, both of which are in Montreal. He’ll choose Concordia because it is just a better fit for him and will allow him to do an internship during the school year. And S19 is my youngest…so I will just be hanging out on CC for another month or so to hear about decisions…and then the SwimmingDad handle will be retired. :slight_smile:

@SwimmingDad Congrats!

Congrats on the decision!

It’s gone very quiet here. Everyone ok? On tenterhooks?

@Britmom5 Just reading all the news I can find, with CNN running in the background.

Bizarre isn’t it? Now if I’d only known I could bypass all this angst and tension for a mere $75,000 payoff…
