Turns out that the book that D19 read over the summer as part of her ārequired summer readingā was actually optional. What wasnāt optional was reading Of Mice and Men. She had to read the entire thing last night in order to be prepared for class today.
Funny, the website explicitly states that she can read one of three books over the summer. It never said that book was required and the others were optional.
To quote from the website āstudents will carefully read one of the selected titles.ā And later, āstudents can choose any text from the above list.ā The website also says, āall students must complete the reading no later than August 29,ā when in fact they were required to read it by August 23.
Thatās exactly what we experienced last year, conflicting info.
@gusmahler thatās frustrating, to say this least. Has anyone approached the teacher about the descrepancy?
There was an error on a summer assignment for one of S16ās classes - a due date, but S16 caught the error about a week before classes began and rushed to complete the assignment. It had a 2015 due date instead of 2016. In 2015 the first day of classes was 8/25 but this year the first day was 8/17. Because of the error, the teacher extended the due date to the 25th.
DS19 entered a flag design contest for a city in Illinois because that was the city where his grandmother last lived before she died. His flag was chosen as a finalist! We canāt vote for his flag because we donāt live there but we still think itās nice he entered.

S19 due home from band camp today. Iām betting he still hasnāt finished his summer reading either, but at least school doesnāt start for us until after Labor Day, so he still has some time to complete the book. That said, our experience has been that, despite district communication, not many teachers do much with it.
My wife starts back at her school on Monday, though no students for her either till after the holiday. Itās hard to believe āsummerā is winding down.
Next big question - anyone have any info on schools with good Film/TV/Video production programs? S19 seems to be headed in that direction. Weāre aware of the obvious ones (e.g. UCLA), but wonder what other schools have good programs/co-op opportunities in the field.

@Undercovermom1 I told my daughter that she should complain to the teacher about the wrong assignment being posted online. She responded that itās only a 100 page book and complaining would immediately put her on the teacherās bad side, which she didnāt want.

Another friendās son wanted to go to Chapman University but things did not work out so he is starting at Santa Fe.

Chapman is pretty generous with meeting need and some merit. We know a lot of kids that go there. It is high on S19ās list at the moment for overall writing and screen plays in particular. While I honestly canāt see that as the right path for him, Chapman has enough that is I am ok with him focusing on it for the moment.

S19 is primarily interested in the production/editing and technical side for film/television. Heās definitely not a creative type when it comes to creating the story, but he seems to have a knack for putting together a finished product from.
DS19 is plugging away at the AP World History. So far heās doing really well. Hopefully it will continue .
Just picked up S19 from NYLT. He had an amazing time, what a gift his troop gave him sending him! Heās had such a summer of personal growth itās almost mind boggling and really, all due to scouts.
He will be skipping a family 8 mile hike tomorrow though, he is T-10 days on summer homework and has a very busy week between XC and band camp. He did bring his AP world book to NYLT and got through a lot of it so that is something.
Funny though, S17 and I were chatting tonight about where he is at with his summer homework and I mentioned his little brother was in a world of hurt behind. He was commenting on how it shouldnāt be bad as he knew S19 had brought his book. I reminded him of the mapping project that still has to be done which takes quite a bit of time.
He was like āohā¦the map. Man I blocked that from my memory. You are right, heās in a world of hurtā.

@eandesmom I agree with you about the benefit of Scouts. DS16 went to NYLT also. He earned Eagle last Fall. DS19 just earned Life Scout on Tuesday. Good luck to your son on completing his AP World homework.

DS19 earned his Life last year, but this year has been a slow year.
He did not want to go to NYLT. 6 scouts from our Troop went this summer. Maybe next summer.
Yesterday our family went for a service project with dirt, shovels and all for family (service) project part of his merit badge. He earned Family Life badge finally after an entire year of my nagging āLetās go do family service project at xxx!ā Five more Eagle required merit badges to go. :-? And of course the Eagle project. I am hoping he takes a stab at it next summer.

DS19 has been procrastinating his reading, but then fortunately a friend told him a journal is required. He is chugging along on his reading journal on āIām not Scared.ā 70% done he says :-?
Thanks @payn4ward . DS19 has also been fairly slow to progress last year. In all fairness to him, my attention was diverted to older brotherās college application process and visits . Heās back on track right now though. My hope is that he earns Eagle before his Junior year so that he can focus on his academics that year, but still participate and work on some palms if he wants.
